Dr. Tom Calma – National Coordinator, Tackling Indigenous Smoking and former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and National Race Discrimination Commissioner

“Why public policy should be developed through a Social Work lens – exploring examples of where it is working”

Dr Calma is an Aboriginal elder from the Kungarakan tribal group who has been involved in Indigenous affairs at local, community, state, national and international levels and is a member of several boards and committees focusing on rural and remote Australia, health, education and economic development. Dr Calma served as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2004-2010, and as Race Discrimination Commissioner from 2004-2009. Dr Calma’s training in social work and community development has lead him to be a strong advocate for Indigenous rights and empowerment and spearhead initiatives including the for Indigenous Health Equality Campaign, the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples and Justice Reinvestment. In 2010, Dr Calma was awarded an honorary doctor of letters from Charles Darwin University, and in 2011 an honorary doctor of science from . In 2012, in the Queen’s Birthday 2012 Honours Awards Dr Calma was awarded an Order of Australia; Officer of the General Division (AO) for distinguished service to the Indigenous community and to cross cultural understanding.
