The ‘Larry Detjens Sportsmanship Award’ was established by ARTGO in 1987 to ensure that Detjens’ contributions to the sport would forever be remembered. Voted on by their peers prior to the final event of the season during Oktoberfest Race Weekend, the award is presented to the racer that best represents sportsmanship and efforts to improve short track racing. 1987 Steve Holzhausen 1997 Jason Schuler 2007 Donny Reuvers 1988 Scott Hansen 1998 Pete Moore 2008 Jamie Iverson 1989 Dennis Lampman 1999 Brian Hoppe 2009 Nathan Haseleu 1990 Larry Schuler 2000 Travis Kvapil 2010 Chris Wimmer 1991 Kevin Cywinski 2001 Tim Schendel 2011 Griffin McGrath 1992 Rick Beebe 2002 Josh Vadnais 2012 Nathan Haseleu 1993 Larry Schuler 2003 Les Ferris 2013 James Swan 1994 J.R. • NASCAR Sponsorship: Who Is the Real Winner? an Event Study Proposal
NASCAR Sponsorship: Who is the Real Winner? An event study proposal A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Meredith Seurkamp May 2006 Oxford, Ohio ii ABSTRACT NASCAR Sponsorship: Who is the Real Winner? An event study proposal by Meredith Seurkamp This paper investigates the costs and benefits of NASCAR sponsorship. Sports sponsorship is increasing in popularity as marketers attempt to build more personal relationships with their consumers. These sponsorships range from athlete endorsements to the sponsorship of an event or physical venue. These types of sponsorships have a number of costs and benefits, as reviewed in this paper, and the individual firm must use its discretion whether sports sponsorship coincides with its marketing goals. NASCAR, a sport that has experienced a recent boom in popularity, is one of the most lucrative sponsorship venues in professional sports. NASCAR, which began as a single race in 1936, now claims seventy-five million fans and over one hundred FORTUNE 500 companies as sponsors. NASCAR offers a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities, such as driver sponsorship, event sponsorship, track signage, and a number of other options. This paper investigates the fan base at which these marketing messages are directed. Research of NASCAR fans indicates that these fans are typically more brand loyal than the average consumer. NASCAR fans exhibit particular loyalty to NASCAR sponsors that financially support the auto racing sport. The paper further explains who composes the NASCAR fan base and how NASCAR looks to expand into additional markets.

  • NASCAR Prime Time
casestudy “Avery Dennison products work well and their team is committed to quality,” says Nick Woodward, graphics manager at RCR Graphics Center. NASCAR Prime Time Richard Childress Racing has three NASCAR Nationwide Series cars, three Sprint Cup Series cars, three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on a full schedule in 2012. With cars and sponsors for nine teams, keeping an outside graphics provider up to date with color schemes and sponsor logos proved difficult. On top of all the teams’ race cars, each has a show car that goes on tour for corporate partners and is on display at conventions, store openings, car shows and more. To meet the team’s growing graphics demands, the leadership decided to bring the printing and installation in-house in 2011 and turned to Avery Dennison for digital media and overlaminates. Graphics Partner Nick Woodward is the graphics manager at the RCR Graphics Center. He and Kenneth Ward, the creative manager, are responsible for keeping all the cars in the right colors and with the right sponsor logos. The duo use a combination of Avery Dennison products and paint to keep the cars decked out. www.averygraphics.com casestudy The team’s products of choice are Avery Dennison MPI 1005 Supercast Easy Apply RS and DOL 1360 gloss overlaminate for the graphics that are used on the cars, car haulers, pit and toolboxes, pitwall banners, helmets, showcars and their trailers, wall murals and graphics and other miscellaneous equipment and jobs. Avery Dennison developed a custom color match for the Menards yellow with the new Supreme Wrapping Film.
