o you know how many species of trees there are on campus? The Environmental Pioneers of IC Ras Beirut Middle School have identified more DD than 16 plant species. To increase awareness about plant biodiversity on campus, 16 signs were spread around the campus under their respective trees. These signs bore the names of the trees with their scientific name. Next time you pass by an I.C. tree, make sure you say hello when she introduces herself!n

THE ONE LEBANON CONCERT

SENIOR CHOIR PERFORMS A SPRING CONCERT

he senior choir once more amazed the public with an excellent performance based on poetry and beautiful harmonies, including “Thou Gracious God” “Eternity”, “Baba Yetu”, the UEFA Champions league song and concluding with “The seal Lullubye” and “Die Nachtigal”. Whether in Swahili or in German our multilingual students stood up to the challenge.n

Swimming team in France

his month a group of 14 swimmers from the elementary and middle school travelled to Caen, France to participate in an international swimming competition and IC was the only school team to compete among all the clubs. The swimmers were very tired after two long days and most of them participated in more than 7 races. At the end, our swimmers got 5 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze medals. Way to go IC ATHLETES! n

Finalists in International School Essay Competition

Samar Maalouf Tohme is delighted to announce that Mary Anne Der Kaloustian and Anthony Hanna, Grade 9 students at the International College in Ain MM Aar, Lebanon, have been recognised as Finalists in the Trust for Sustainable Living 2015 International Schools Essay Competition – Secondary School age category. Students from 43 countries from different corners of the world were invited to write an essay of not more than 600 words outlining their visions for Sustainability Education and their ideas on how to achieve it. The essays were judged for originality and creative thinking and the potential to contribute to a broad-ranging and constructive debate on Education for Sustainable Development. Congratulations to our young writers!n

Book Fair at Ain Aar

he Ain Aar campus was bustling with additional activity as everyone raced to visit the Book Fair and find the right book to add to the personal library that is dear to one and all. The choice of books in Arabic, English, and French provided by the different publishers allowed book lovers to find what they had been looking for. It is heartwarming to witness this unwavering enthusiasm for this special event.n

6 Ain Aar Brevet Farewell Celebrations

in Aar honors its graduating students every year with a Fun Day and an Olive Tree Planting Ceremony. This year, Ain Aar middle school teachers along with Dr. Bergman teamed up to play the annual football match against the Brevet students. The match was action packed and most entertaining for all involved. It was followed by a water fight which was carried out with elaborate “weaponry” students had brought for the occasion. After all this action, it was time to fuel up with delicious breakfast and cakes. The following day a ceremonial Olive Tree Planting took place, which was an emotional moment. It dawned on all of us students, teachers and administrators alike that we are soon going to say farewell, after “12 years of happiness” as expressed by the students.n

Exposition du Programme Primaire (PYPEx): le travail sur le terrain

Les élèves de CM2 (AA) ont entrepris de cibler les UU problématiques afin de définir la direction que prendront les actions et le travail sur le terrain a commencé. Dans des situations de « vécu réel »ils ont franchi les murs de la classe pour aller enquêter sur le terrain. Ce fut alors les entrevues, les visites sur les sites, les rencontres de tous genres, la réalisation de reportages filmés, les sorties de groupes…Toutes ces activités ont fourni l’opportunité, aux apprenants d’élargir leur horizon et d’entrevoir les problèmes à travers des perspectives différentes. Ils sont dans l’attente du grand jour où ils pourront présenter leurs réalisations au grand public.n

7 Une histoire d’arc-en-ciel

omme chaque année, l’IC fête la semaine verte. On réfléchit à l’environnement, on fait attention à ne pas gaspiller, on économise la lumière, les papiers…. Tout le monde est sensibilisé à ce problème et chacun fait le maximum. CC La G.S. groupe jaune a fait une recherche dans ce cadre. Ils ont remarqué que souvent on pouvait voir un arc-en-ciel dans le ciel, qu’il faisait partie de l’environnement et que la façon dont il apparaissait ou disparaissait était étrange. Les enfants ont voulu savoir d’où il vient, comment il est fabriqué, à quel moment on le voit …. Ils ont cherché dans les livres, sur Internet et ils ont trouvé des réponses. Ils ont aussi écrit un livre qui raconte une histoire d’arc-en-ciel. Ils ont cherché et trouvé une chanson qui parle aussi de l’arc-en-ciel, ils l’ont apprise et dansée. Ensuite, ils ont invité les autres G.S pour leur montrer le résultat de leur recherche et leur apprendre tout ce qu’ils ont trouvé comme informations sur ce phénomène superbe. n

8 Le Parcours Des Saveurs

urant le thème transdisciplinaire « le partage de la planète », les élèves de la petite section/nursery ont eu l’occasion DD de visiter Le Parcours Des Saveurs, une ferme aux animaux divers et surprenants, située à Kfarchima. Cette expérience enrichissante leur a permis d’identifier l’habitat de différents animaux, ainsi que les produits variés qu’on leur doit. Ils ont aussi vu la nourriture donnée par le fermier, ou bien celle que certains animaux (volailles, cochons…) cherchent eux-mêmes. Répartis en petits groupes, les élèves ont observé les animaux dans leur milieu de vie et ont pu écouter leurs manifestations sonores et leurs cris. Les enfants ont beaucoup apprécié cette visite, ils ont fait beaucoup de découvertes et sont prêts à y retourner. n

Trip to Sarafand orchards

n the context of the “Sharing the planet” unit, the students of KGI/ MS (RB) visited many places to II deepen their understanding of how “Plants are a life-sustaining resource that people try to preserve”. First, they went on a nature walk in a forest where they inquired about different kinds of plants, their products and how people preserve them to ensure a balance in the environment. Next, they visited some orchards in Sarafand. They picked oranges from the trees, made orange juice and drank it fresh! They also observed lemon and banana trees. To learn to appreciate the environment, they painted nature and reflected on the importance of the preservation of plants and its influence on living things. Finally, they went to the AUB green houses and listened to the explanations of how people’s positive actions like caring for them and studying about their needs, guarantee that they stay healthy. So many people are caring about plants and in so many different ways! )n

ast week, the Preschool library received a visitor from Sagesse High School. Mrs. Zeina Srouji went around, looking at the colorful, welcoming sight. 9 When Art brings us together!

he streets of IC Ras Beirut were teaming with artwork done by our students during the past two years in preparation for the IC Art Festival. Grade I/CP and Grade II/CE1 students of Ain Aar visited our Beirut campus and discovered an array of creative and skillfully made artworks under the theme “The Sky is our limit”. They also enjoyed a picnic with their peers from Ras Beirut. A day of fun, colors, creativity and a lot of inspiration!n

It I can bring the whole community together in a “FUN” atmosphere! During the month of May, CE2 and Grade 3 classes at the Lower Elementary school in Ain Aar organized a P.E fun hour! Parents were invited to take part and participate actively with their children in “FUN” activities! On Tuesday May 12th, our president Dr. Bergman did not miss the fun, nor did our director Ms. Lina Mouchantaf, along with the class teachers! It was wonderful seeing the kids playing with their parents, teachers, director and the president of IC with much enthusiasm and joy! We all spent quality time together, laughing, running, and enjoying every moment! Fun did bring our community together for one unforgettable hour!n

11 Grade 3/CE2 Students Explore Beirut

s part of their How We Organize Ourselves unit, the Grade 3 / CE2 students at Ras Beirut Elementary took a tour of several ancient sites in our capital’s downtown area. Their core interest for the unit has been to understand how city systems function and how they are interconnected as well as being interdependent. Indeed, this connectedness and dependency has been prevalent in previous civilizations, as the students discovered downtown when visiting sites such as the Roman baths and the St. Georges museum under the Cathedral on Place D’Etoile. Directly linked to IC’s Guiding Statement, this intra-curricular activity, helped strengthen students’ social and civic awareness. Despite it being a very warm day, the students gained a true appreciation of Beirut through history and this knowledge and experience will no doubt stay with them for a long time to come!n

13 The PYP Exhibition-Putting Words into Action

Attending the oral presentations of the students, visiting their informative stands, and talking to them, we were inspired to participate in each of their actions. Creating a public transportation system, improving tourism in Lebanon, raising awareness of the dangers of drug addiction, tobacco smoking, or technology, preserving our heritage architecture, child labor, animal abuse, and road safety are just a few issues addressed by the students. There were in total 72 in the ‘30th Mondial Pupilles Plomelin’ in male and 16 female teams. Participating teams came MM France from Thursday May 14th through from all over the world including Canada, Brazil, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guinea, Morocco, Ukraine, Italy, Scotland and of course France. Mark and his teammates got a chance to play against the likes of Olympique Lyonnais (5th), Stade Brestois 29 (9th) and CFF Paris (17th). Athletico Club Beirut came in 49th. Their best match was probably the one they played against CFF Paris where they managed to score 2 goals against a team that only conceded 4. Although they lost that match they gave it their very best. Mark’s most memorable moment was a slide tackle and he was pleasantly surprised to find his picture in the local paper the next day!n

LMC LITERATI

he @IC_Lebanon LMC Literati got together to share creative writing in English and French: Short stories, excerpts of novels and poetry animated a lovely June afternoon in a symposium that brought together students and teachers. Organized by Silvana Bartlett and the LMC team, 20 or so particpants read and discussed a wide variety of texts and genres, including published works by Salma Kojok, Antony Di Nardo, Rida Saleh and Mishka Mojabber Mourani. The contributions of students Yasmina Ghadban, Youssef Bassil, Adam Jamal, Christopher Raffouli, Martina Monteduro and Farouk Grissom were interesting, well written, and elicited active discussion.n

La tolérance ça fait des amis

e respect et la tolérance sont des actes libérateurs qui permettent de prendre conscience que les différences d’autrui sont aussi nos propres différences et que la richesse d’une autre culture devient la «L richesse de tous » - Irina Bokova, le 21 mars 2014 Tout au long de cette année les élèves de CM1 de Ras Beyrouth ont travaillé en collaboration avec les élèves de plusieurs écoles françaises et l’école « Tahadi ».Un recueil de poème collectif fut mis en place rassemblant les poèmes de nos enfants participants à cette action. Les élèves de Tahadi furent invités à passer une matinée à l’IC. Une partie de football fut mise en place par les élèves de CM1 suivi d’un petit déjeuner qui fut partagé lors de la récréation. Nos jeunes apprenants ont fait preuve d’empathie et de tolérance. L’éducation est un moyen de donner aux enfants la possibilité de devenir membres actifs à la transformation des sociétés dans lesquelles ils vivent.n

15 Plumier D’Or

os trois sections de 4ème ont participé au concours Le Plumier d’Or devenu N désormais une tradition. Ce concours N mis en place par l’organisme Défense de la langue française, à l’occasion de la semaine de la francophonie, est destiné aux élèves des collèges publics et privés. La middle school s’est encore une fois distinguée puisque le jury a tenu à décerner un prix d’appréciation pour leurs résultats au concours à Jad Assi, Tala Kadi, Antoine Samra et Ibrahim Yassine. La remise des diplômes a eu lieu en présence de Mme Hoss, de Mme Charara et de Mme Itani ainsi que du département de français. Il ne reste plus à nos élèves, désormais occupés à dorer leur talent, qu’à passer la plume à la génération suivante.n

Football to fight poverty

They played football with Ms. Rana Anouti’s students and took breakfast with them in the playground. The IC students had collected donations to support the NGO (http://www. tahaddilebanon.org/). The guests received a certificate later and the amount collected by our students was giving to them (483 000 LL).n

ave you ever dreamed of meeting Amelia Earhart? Albert Einstein? Demi Lovato? The 6th grade students at HH Ras Beirut Middle School were able to meet them…and many more amazing people at the 1st Annual Historical Tea Party in May 2015. Hosted by their English teachers, James Dean (Mr. Ryan Lee) and Jackie Kennedy (Ms. Elizabeth Myers), students had a chance to mingle with other historical people and learn through conversations and interviews about the lives and contributions of a variety of people. Students had fun bringing the characters to life and, hopefully, gain a greater appreciation for reading and enjoying biographies..n

Les élèves du CM2 quitteront bientôt l’univers UU de l’école élémentaire dans lequel ils sont les « grands » pour celui du collège dans lequel ils seront les »petits ». C’est la raison pour laquelle nous avons décidé de leur donner un avant-goût de cette nouvelle aventure au collège en les invitant à passer une journée en classe de sixième, avec les élèves de cette classe.. Au cours de cette journée, ils découvriront de nouvelles matières passionnantes, ils comprendront l’importance du gain en autonomie, ils rencontreront les enseignants du cycle et partageront avec les élèves de la sixième actuelle leur excitation ; ainsi ils sauront calmer leur appréhension. Pour garder une trace écrite de cette journée bien particulière dans leur vie d’apprenants, les élèves ont rédigé un paragraphe dans lequel ils ont exprimé leurs attentes et leurs impressions.n

L’école secondaire du Collège International organise un dîner pour le personnel étranger

ans le cadre du programme du service communautaire à l’école secondaire du Collège International, les élèves des sections françaises DD de première, aidés par la section littéraire du bac libanais, ont organisé un dîner pour le personnel étranger de l’IC. Avant le dîner, le personnel a visualisé une vidéo surprise préparée par les élèves où ils leur expriment leur gratitude envers la qualité du travail effectué et les efforts déployés tout au long de l’année pour assurer un environnement propre et sain. Le dîner a été préparé par les élèves qui ont servi puis partagé le repas avec les travailleurs. Chacun des invités a reçu un cadeau d’appréciation. En effet, 32 cadeaux achetés par les élèves, au nombre des travailleurs, ont été distribués suite à une tombola organisée en fin de soirée.n

17 Performance art

Les talents étaient nombreux et diversifiés. Sous la direction de madame Arlette Akl, les élèves ont présenté une panoplie de travaux variés et originaux. D’après Karim: c’était la plus belle période de vie de classe (advisory) qu’il ait jamais eu.n

Jeune Virtuose

armi nos talentueux élèves, on ne peut que signaler le talent incontournable du jeune Shaun Agostine Il suffit de placer PP Shaun devant un piano pour qu’il vous charme de mille mélodies sorties droit de son âme. Inlassablement, ses doigts courent sur le clavier et font sortir de l’instrument des airs prenants et beaux. A 11ans, Shaun a été invité à jouer ses propres compositions durant le Eduard Kunz piano concert qui est un des dix meilleurs pianistes au monde. Shaun a été décrit par les médias comme « un enfant au talent supérieur et jouant comme un professionnel ». Il se trouve sur YouTube où il a déjà été vu plus de 100.000 fois.n

19 International Day: Opening our Mind

Appreciating cultural diversity is one of IC’s core objectives and this unique annual event thoroughly promotes this quality. This year over 500 students were involved with an audience of approximately 2,000 parents and other family members. Also included amongst the audience were various dignitaries from the specific countries chosen. As always, it was a cultural trip that flew from one corner of the world to another! With their colorful costumes, wonderful songs, and beautiful dances stands included student work and also highlighted and on stage, Lebanon, Colombia, Madagascar, Portugal, celebrated their learning journey as they grew more USA (Hawaii), Puerto Rico, Albania and Mongolia were and became more knowledgeable, open minded and all spectacularly represented. Once upon a time

Les parents des gagnants ont exprimé leur joie en assistant à cette belle cérémonie. Bravo à Norah Arayssi (1ère gagnante), Noureddine Atassi (2nd gagnant) et Hind Mourad (3ème gagnante) !!n

Zumba à l’école élémentaire

ardi 9 juin, 43 élèves des classes de CM1/grade de Zumba à l’auditorium IRANI, une activité initiée IV et CM2/grade V ont présenté un spectacle à l’IC en 2014, et qui depuis, jouit d’un grand succès MM auprès des élèves. Les danseurs et leur coach, miss Sarah, ont travaillé d’arrache-pied toute l’année pour offrir aux parents et au reste de l’école une performance hors du commun, pleine d’énergie, de vitalité et d’entrain. Le public a été stupéfait de voir combien ces 43 élèves étaient synchronisés et sûrs de leurs mouvements. Les couleurs des vêtements, la musique, le rythme latino, les jeux de lumières et, par-dessus tout, le sourire des enfants, tout était au rendez-vous pour une ambiance de fête!n

Collaboration and Communication on a National Level

s part of its ongoing plan to develop stronger communication and collaboration between all IB schools in Lebanon, the Lebanese Association for the International Baccalaureate organized a ‘PYP get together’, at the IC Elementary School, Ras Beirut, for all teachers teaching Grade 5/CM2. The focus of the meeting was for the teachers to share their expertise and experience in teaching the PYP Exhibition. The diversity in approaches to learning from each school allowed teachers to enrich their own understanding of just what is possible within this important culminating experience. Teachers were also able to share common concerns and successes. The Association under the leadership of Ms. Nada Shatila, as Chair, and Ms. Alexandra El Khawaja, as vice-chair, hope to continue its mission of bringing all IB schools in Lebanon together in future projects, teacher meetings, and student focused events.n

21 “Innovation Day”

his year’s Ras Beirut Elementary School, fourth graders, capped off their final unit about innovative thinking by becoming inventors themselves, creating a wide range of interesting and original contraptions. They spent a long time and put a lot of effort into brainstorming, planning, and preparing for what they called “Innovation Day”, the one day at school devoted entirely to the innovation of the students and the completion of their projects. The whole process , from brainstorming to construction, was student-driven. The teachers were there only as guides, letting the students put to use the many skills they have been developing over the year. 22 The Journey of the Thousand Miles

he students of KGI took action regarding their understanding of how people preserve nature. They located an unplanted parking lot and started planning and implementing their ideas for planting and preserving this piece of land. They created a system whereby each group of students had a specific responsibility. One group did the benches, another painted the wall, another planted the lot, the fourth designed garbage bins and the last group created signs to be placed in the parking lot. This project was the culmination of all the students’ learning throughout the year, where they have detected a problem and decided to use what they have gained to help take action and solve it. Au travail

Après avoir confectionné quelques recettes simples et rapides comme la gelée et la limonade, les enfants ont eu le plaisir de déguster leurs recettes et ils se sont régalés. n

23 Hanging Books!!

hat is that hanging in the playground? Are those books? WW Strange! Let’s discover. Our curious young learners begin inspecting each and every book. Some are in English, others in French or Arabic. Some are stories and others are documentary books. There’s something for everyone. This book attracts their attention. They stop and begin reading it, eagerly turning the pages. During the Reading Week, the teachers have prepared a reading corner in the playground especially for this purpose. The kids choose the book, and the teachers read it. Listening to a story in the open air was definitely a different experience for all our preschoolers, as well as for teachers who got to interact with students from other levels. n

A votre santé!

ans le cadre du thème « Le partage de la planète », les DD élèves de la MSB, Ain Aar, ont pris conscience que les plantes contribuent à la vie sur Terre et que chaque personne les utilise selon ses besoins personnels. Eux aussi ont voulu profiter des bienfaits et de l’utilité des plantes ! Ils ont eu l’occasion de créer du parfum à partir d’herbes et de fleurs, de planter des arbres et de recycler du papier. L’une de leurs activités favorites a été de participer à la préparation du thé à la menthe. Ce thé est obtenu grâce à l’infusion de feuilles de thé vert et de menthe verte, accompagnée de beaucoup de sucre. Il est servi très chaud et il est, plus particulièrement, la boisson de l’hospitalité. Les élèves ont dégusté avec plaisir ce breuvage, auquel on prête un grand nombre de vertus, notamment toniques et digestives. A votre santé !n

24 Une proposition écologique

es élèves de CE1B à Ain Ar ont décidé de prendre les choses en main pour protéger LL l’environnement en proposant une initiative écologique. Ils ont demandé un rendez-vous avec M. Chukri, directeur financier de l’IC, pour lui proposer leur plan. Lisez plutôt ce que Maria, l’une des élèves, a écrit : « Le mardi 9 juin, Carlo, Karen et Maria ont parlé à Monsieur Chukri, responsable de la maintenance à l’école, à propos de la pollution. Ils lui ont proposé de mettre des panneaux solaires qui produisent de l’énergie électrique pour sauvegarder l’environnement. Il a dit qu’on n’a pas besoin de lumière car on a le soleil qui nous éclaire et que le système coûte très cher. Alors on lui a proposé de le faire pour avoir de l’eau chaude. À la fin, il nous a dit qu’il va étudier ce sujet. » n

L’exposition du PP fait un détour en MS

es élèves du CM2, ou comme le diraient les élèves de Moyenne Section « les grands » , sont passés dans notre classe LL pour partager avec nous les résultats des recherches qu’ils ont menées pour l’exposition du PP. Ils ont amené avec eux une maquette qui représentait deux zones industrielles : l’une néfaste pour notre environnement et l’autre plus respectueuse. Nous avons appris, entre autres, qu’il faut planter des arbres autour des usines pour purifier l’air à côté des habitations. Beaucoup de belles solutions et deux générations qui travaillent déjà côte à côte pour y réfléchir. L’avenir est prometteur! n

urant le thème transdisciplinaire « Le partage de la planète », les apprenants de Grande DD Section à Ain Aar ont pris le rôle de chercheurs. Ils ont découvert, en faisant une marche autour de l’école et à la réserve de KornetChehwan, ce qu’est l’environnement naturel et ils ont pu repérer, dessiner et inscrire leurs observations sur leurs livrets. Étant communicatifs, ils ont ensuite partagé leurs observations en classe avec leurs camarades. Ils ont aussi pu distinguer les actions qui nuisent à l’environnement de celles qui sont positives pour l’environnement et les ont bien expliquées. C’était une très belle journée ensoleillée et enrichissante, les apprenants ont fait une bonne marche, ils ont respiré de l’air propre et ils ont promis de respecter l’environnement naturel! n

26 Community Service

or this year’s community service project, our class (7th ESE) decided to work with non- other than Live Love Beirut, an NGO that FF believes in youth. Over the course of a week, we sold Live Love Beirut bracelets to students all around campus. We were able to make $ 2500 in profit and use these funds to implement our final idea. Our final idea was to create a workspace for innovative individuals that can provide these individuals with resources and funds to make their vision come to life. We called it: Live Love Lab. It is a place full of energy, cooperation, motivation, liveliness, and hard work. The main aim is to create changes in Lebanon. Too many people are fed up with the situation in Lebanon, want to make a change, have an idea, but have no clue where to start. Live Love Lab is the place to go! The activities that we took responsibility of handling are painting chairs and walls, fixing broken down items and finally getting rid of old furniture. n

First Middle School Sustainability Elective

group of 11 Middle School students at Ras Beirut have been undertaking classes on sustainability this semester. It is the latest interesting elective to be added to the Middle School program and is being given by Richard Bampfylde, a Master in Climate Change and Sustainable Development. Over the 11 week program, the pioneering students have learnt the core topics of climate change (mitigation and adaptation), carbon emissions (measurement, footprint), water (both the school’s and personal consumption, which included a tour of the new Elementary water systems) and renewable energy technologies (solar, wind, geothermal etc.) as well as global and national 2020 targets (for the reduction of emissions and integrating renewables into the energy mix). Indeed, having taken such an interest in and discovered so much about sustainability, they will no doubt act as sustainability ambassadors at IC’s proposed Sustainability Week set for the next academic year.n

An Escape from the City

n connection with our transdisciplinary theme: Sharing the planet, Ras Beirut first graders had the opportunity to visit a bio-farm in Batroun. The II importance of this farm is that it provides organic food for people. The students were inquirers, asking interesting questions about the different animals on this farm. They were also caring, showing enthusiasm and appreciation of these living things since people depend on them to survive. After this field trip, first graders became more aware of how people need to take care of the environment to have a healthy life. For this reason, the students used their creativity to make posters about saving our Earth. It was a wonderful experience for all!n
