ALLEN AND TORRES RANK HIGH IN NCAA STATISTICS ENTERING WEEK Freshman slugger listed as top 15 hitter with .441 average entering week. Now hitting .435.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State University Sun Devil newcomer players Andy Torres and Rod Allen have helped lead the Sun Devils to a 27-14-1 overall record and a No. 20 national ranking. Both players, along with a host of other Sun Devils are currently listed among the top baseball players in the nation when the weekly NCAA Division I statistical leaders were release today.

Torres, a junior transfer from East Los Angeles CC, is tied for the national lead with 11 wins. At 11-3 on the mound this year, Torres has maintained an impressive 3.97 ERA with 55 in 65.2 innings. The crafty right-hander has pitched in three consecutive games and four of ASU’s last six, picking up two wins last week on the road. In consecutive days, Torres picked up both wins as ASU beat Oklahoma (5-3) and Oral Roberts (5-2) in 11 innings. A starter at the beginning of the year, Torres has moved to the where he is 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA.

Despite going 1-for-4 last night in a 7-6 non-conference baseball win over Gonzaga, Allen entered the week with the 12th best batting average in the NCAA at .441. The Freshman product of Desert Vista High School has been on a tear at the plate as of late, hitting .565 (13x23) over his last six games with 13 RBI, two doubles, two home runs and eight runs scored. For the season Allen has clubbed four home runs, 11 doubles and 35 RBI. He is currently hitting .435.

Several other Sun Devils are also listed in this week’s NCAA statistical rankings. All-American Casey Myers continues to have a banner senior season, ranking third in the Pac-10 and 23rd nationally with a .421 batting average. His 1.27 RBI per game (53 for the year) also ranks 23rd in the nation. With 259 RBI in his illustrious career, Myers is now just 24 off the school and Pac-10 record of 283 set by former Sun Devil Andrew Beinbrink. Myers is now hitting .419 after going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI last night.

Freshman infielder Steve Garrabrants is ranked 16th with an average of 0.14 triples per game (5 on the year) and junior left-handed starting Jon Switzer is 16th with an average of 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Behind the stellar hitting of Allen and Myers, ASU is listed as the 10th best hitting team in the nation with a .337 batting average. Their 8.46 runs scored per game is 15th in the NCAA behind national leader New Mexico State (10.43).

The Sun Devil baseball team will close out a two-game, non-conference series with the Gonzaga Bulldogs tonight (April 24) at 7 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Winning five of its last six games, the Sun Devils are on a roll as they head into a crucial Pac-10 series with rival Arizona this weekend. Both the ‘Cats and Devils are tied for sixth in the Pac-10 with identical 7-8 record in conference play.
