Home of the Josey Jr. World Barrel Race Home of the Josey Jr. World Barrel Race Dear Contestant, CONGRATULATIONS for entering one of the TOP barrel races in the WORLD! You will be running for over $100,000 in cash and prizes. We are excited that you and your family have chosen to join us at the Josey Ranch for all the fun and festivities this year! We are expecting hundreds of spectators, in addition to media coverage from television, radio, local newspapers, and national magazines. This year the entire Jr. World Barrel Race will be broadcast around the world over the internet by Barrel Horse News, at barrelhorsenews.com. There will be a lot of excitement this year at the 34th ANNUAL JOSEY JR. WORLD BARREL RACE, one of the most exciting barrel races in the country! Barrel Race Format The Josey Jr. World Barrel Race uses the 4D format. The top 20 from each division on each day will advance to the clean slate Big Tex Shootout Finals on Sunday. Those qualifying in the “first go” will automatically be in the finals. If the contestant double qualifies, we will move down in line from the “second go.” If you qualify the first day, running the second day is at your discretion. If you qualify the first day and decide NOT to run the second day, PLEASE LET THE SECRETARY KNOW! Now, let’s talk sponsors… Big Tex/Cimmaron Trailers has donated a beautiful horse trailer to the Josey Jr. World Champion this year. We are very excited to present this trailer to the barrel Racer with the fastest time in the short go. Randy Domino and Mitzi Long will be at the ranch to speak about their trailers, so be sure to stop by and visit with them. You will want to join us in welcoming all of our corporate sponsors who help make this and many other great Josey events possible. Lifewave/Aculife will be donating $5000 added money. Sandi and Jay Thurston will be on the ranch representing Lifewave/Aculife. Jill Holloman with Circle Y of Yoakum will be here to show the wonderful Josey Ultimate Saddles, including the new “Hip hugger”, the Josey-Mitchell youth “Avenger”, the Martha Josey “Legend” and all the other great equipment from Circle Y. David Fillebrown and Courtney Dyer of Priefert will also be on site. You can see OUR Priefert Round Pen and Priefert stalls throughout the ranch. Josey Ranch is a certified Priefert dealer and Priefert catalogs are available in the Western Store. United Vet Equine will be here to help you find the perfect joint supplement for your equine athlete. Ernie and Rusty Purina Mills nutrition specialist, Scott Campbell, will be on hand to help you find the perfect feed to meet your horse’s nutritional needs. Also representing Purina will be Ernie Rodina, host of the radio show “Better Horses”, along with country singer Rusty Rierson, who will keep everyone entertained with some great country music throughout the event. Bennie Emmons with Supreme Western Products, will also be in the tents with items for both horse and rider. In our Western Store you will find some great new designs and products from Panhandle Slim, Cowgirl Tuff, and our new selections from ROAR. We are very proud of Bob Berg Designs for designing our beautiful championship buckles. Make sure you take your horse by for a free evaluation by Jay Thurston at the Aculife/Lifewave promotional trailer. Aculife patches for your horse are a great way to help reduce pain. There will be an demonstration in the arena on Thursday evening. Lots of great prizes will be given to the TOP 10 CONTESTANTS in each division, thanks to our wonderful sponsors. The TOP BARREL RACER IN EACH DIVISION will win a beautiful trophy saddle. Saddles will include some of the greatest saddle makers, such as Circle Y of Yoakum, Billy Cook, and Jerry Beagley all offering prize saddles for Jr. World winners. We are proud of our college scholarships! Any of our contestants who are starting their next semester as a high school junior or equivalent, who plan to attend a public or private, state recognized educational institute within the next year are eligible to apply for our scholarships in memory of Mr. Fred Boyd, Mrs. Rebecca Adams, and Mrs. Joyce Barney. (The Jr. World competition was the idea of Joyce Barney, who worked many hours with R.E and Martha Josey to create this great event.). Applications will be available at check-in (it is also available on our website, www.barrelracers.com) and will be turned in to Geraldine Mauthe in the sponsor tent. This scholarship will be presented at the church service on Sunday. There will be a scholarship committee, and they will let you know if you are a recipient Saturday before the Saturday Go Round is over. Photographs will be taken so please dress appropriately on Sunday to receive your scholarship. Cebe Reed “Horse with the Most Heart” Award Cebe was Martha’s first great horse. Cebe won the Texas Barrel Racing Association four straight years. He won 52 barrel races in a row and took Martha to her first NFR in 1968, and again in 1969. This award winner will receive a 5 Star Equine horse blanket sponsored by Dr. Greg Ford, DMV, of Houston, Texas. You may pick up a blank entry form in the Trophy Room during check-in, or download it now from barrelracers.com. If you think your horse deserves this award, fill out a form and include an explanation of why your horse should win. The silent auction will start Thursday morning and will wrap up at 3pm Saturday. Saddle Raffle Tickets Contestants, we need your help! Saddle raffle tickets help pay for prizes. You can help us promote the Josey Jr. World by selling all of your raffle tickets. This year our saddle is a Martha Josey Starlight saddle. “Josey Jr. World Champion Barrel Race” is on the fenders. The top ticket seller will receive a very nice breast collar, a $300 gift certificate from the Josey Western Store to be used towards the purchase of an Ultimate saddle, and the top seller will also receive a free 2 ½ day Josey Clinic of their choice. Second place for most tickets sold will receive a nice headstall, and a $200 certificate towards the purchase of an Ultimate saddle. The 3rd place ticket seller will win a halter and a $100 voucher towards the purchase of an ultimate saddle. Exhibitions Exhibitions and practice times: Several exercise areas will be available. The main arena will be open for exhibition runs on Wednesday, 10am until 8pm, and on Thursday, 9am until 4pm, at a cost of $4 per run. The Draw will be posted on barrelracers.com by 5pm, Monday, May 4th. Entries will be taken until the first 100 horses run. Tractors Our finest of tractors are provided by Brad Horn of Fish and Still of Marshall. With their tractors we are able to keep our arena in excellent condition for each contestant. These tractors are for sale. Please visit your local Fish and Still dealer. A special thanks, also, to Scott Andrews of S&J Contractors of Winnsboro, Texas. S&J provides the “BIG ROLLER” which keeps our ground in such good shape. We will drag every 5 runs in the go-rounds. The arena will be drug after every two riders during the final run. We have a mini-pack every 50, and a big pack, every 100. DON’T LOSE YOUR HAT!!! It is difficult to stay on schedule if we have to retrieve lost hats. If you have a stampede string, PLEASE USE IT. If you do not have a stampede string, we have them available in the Western Store. DRESS CODE Please look your best by wearing WESTERN APPAREL and your BACK NUMBER at ALL TIMES. The dress code for all runs is a long-sleeved shirt and a HAT! Please let the people of Marshall, Texas, and the whole world know that you’re a Josey contestant. Videos Mark Burt of MVP Productions is the official videographer of Josey Ranch. A playback of your runs will be available from Mark for review each day on the front porch of the Western Store.     Cowgirl Martha Josey BY AIMEE ROBINSON 3/1/2014 IN MAGAZINE Starting with only a lot of heart, dedication and a $5 rented horse trailer, a cowgirl from East Texas made history. Martha Josey began her barrel-racing career in 1964. More than five decades of her life are filled with championships and hall-of-fame inductions. This 11-time National Finals Rodeo competitor and 1988 Olympic exhibition sport medalist hangs her hat at the Josey Ranch in Marshall. Martha’s family has deep roots in East Texas. She is the granddaughter of Mattie Castleberry, who is famous for putting in nightclubs around Texas and Oklahoma oil boomtowns. Martha’s father, Robert Arthur, is credited with bringing one of the first quarter horses into East Texas in the early 1940’s. “When I was 10 years old, he (father) passed away from a heart attack. Mother ended up selling all of those great horses except for one. She didn’t know what else to do.” After watching barrel racing competition at a rodeo in Shreveport, Martha realized that being a barrel racer was her dream. “This is where I belong. I went home and got my dad’s roping saddle out, put one barrel in the middle of my grandmother’s meadow and decided I was going to be a barrel racer.” Not long after that, a friend who had purchased a 3-year-old from of her father’s stud horse called to see if she wanted to ride him in competition. Martha didn’t have a trailer, and she didn’t have a car, but her mother had an old Buick with 300,000 miles on it.
