As he put it, ‘it would be of no importance if France was Afghanistan. But France is France, Europe’s guide and the conscience of all free men in the entire world; what happens on the banks of the Seine, between the Hotel-de-Ville and la Concorde has a particular importance for man in general.’1 Jankélévitch’s remarks in the journal Les Temps modernes are a useful point of departure for this thesis in indicating the central place, but also the distinctiveness, of Paris in thinking about Europe in this post-war period. The unproblematic straight line that he drew between Paris, France, Europe, and the universal immediately invites critique, of course. But it also implied the question of the space of Europe in the sense of its scope. Europe was, then, to borrow and adapt Frederick Cooper’s argument about France, both less and more than itself.2 Ideas about Europe impacted on and were formed in micro-spaces such as the French capital just as in the wider non-European world. It was often the case that Paris, or spaces within Paris, were in a sense conceived of as a stand-in for Europe as a whole, while Europe was also imagined as constitutively depending on its presence and power in the non-European world. An examination of ‘Europeanising spaces’ is taken to mean an analysis of spaces in Paris in which ideas about Europe were formulated, expressed, exchanged, circulated, and contested 1 Vladimir Jankélévitch, ‘Dans l’honneur et la dignité’, Les Temps modernes (June, 1948), 2259. 2 Frederick Cooper, Colonialism in Question: Theory, History, Knowledge (Berkeley & London: University of California Press, 2005), 171. 7 during this post-war period, roughly between the escalation of the Cold War and the end of the Algerian war of decolonisation.3 The concept of space here is broadly conceived to include the physical urban space that Jankélévitch so usefully points to, but also academic scholarship, intellectuals and their interventions, political movements, cultural groups, cultural performances and institutions, journals, literature, manifestos, photographs, and pertinent images. The analysis includes not only explicit interventions about the continent, but also discourse that implicitly called into question the terms of thinking about the meaning of Europe and of Europeanness. ‘Europeanising spaces’ is also taken to have three idiosyncratic definitions: 1. Europeanisation as a process; 2. Europeanisation as the refusal of the closure of the concepts of ‘Europe’ and ‘Europeanness’; and 3. Europeanisation as disclosure, acknowledgement or appropriation of the concepts of ‘Europe’ and ‘Europeanness’. These definitions will be elaborated on later in the introduction. First, though, the rationale for examining discourse about Europe not in Europe as a whole, but in a single European city, Paris, over a period of about fifteen years, is set out. Rationale for the Examination of Europeanising Spaces in Paris Looking at ideas about Europe in the post-war period up until at least the 1960s, one is struck by the confidence with which many took for granted that France was its highest embodiment. A recurring presupposition was that a Europe in which France did not take centre stage would be wholly implausible. And, crucially, by France was meant Paris. Frederick Cooper maintains that at least until the end of the period in question here, France was both narrower and 3 One should note that this conflict was only recognised by the French state as being in fact a war as recently as 1999. 8 wider than the nation. Both culture and politics were highly centralised in Paris from where an ethos of universalism was projected by France the empire-state far beyond its hexagonal frontiers.

    Two Visions of Spain in the 1950s: Eugene Smith and Brassaï In the nineteen fifties Spain caught the interest of a number of international photographers. Two specific projects are recalled here: Eugene Smith’s Spanish Village, a controversial feature with overt political intentions made for Life magazine, and Brassaï’s series Séville en fête made for Harper’s Bazaar, that proposes instead a picture of Spain halfway between the dream-like images indebted to Surrealism and the clichés of a tourist guide. extraordinary formal perfection, thanks to Smith’s painstaking way of composing his pictures in the manner of a stage director, and on the other it revealed the harshest aspects of Spanish reality, the subsist- ence economy, the Roman plough and the handcrafted distaff still in use, or the weight of authority symbolised by the two civil guards reproduced on a large scale by Life.     Simone de Beauvoir and the Politics of Privilege SONIA KRUKS How should socially privileged white feminists (and others) address their privilege? Often, individuals are urged to overcome their own personal racism through a politics of self-transformation. The paper argues that this strategy may be problematic, since it rests on an over-autonomous conception of the self. The paper turns to Simone de Beauvoir for an alternative account of the selh as “situated,” and explores what this means for a politics ofprivilege. In 1955, Simone de Beauvoir published a collection of essays entitled Privil&es. She wrote in the Preface that one question linked all her essays together: how may the privileged think about their situation? They cannot think about it honestly and without self-delusion, she says. For, “to justify the possession of particular advantages in the mode of the universal is not an easy undertaking,” and it results in a mode of thought marked by the kinds of obfuscation and self- deception that Beauvoir (along with Jean-Paul Sartre) calls “bad faith” (1955, 7). Beauvoir’s main concern in her book was with how ruling-class privilege is masked, or rationalized, in thought. However, her critique also resonates strongly with recent feminist critiques of the self-deceptions inherent in mas- culine, white-race, and other forms of privilege, as well as with the dilemmas of privileged would-be progressives’ more generally. In this paper I turn to Simone de Beauvoir to help think about ‘privilege’ as it is conceived in feminist theory and politics today, and particularly as it poses a predicament for those who enjoy significant social privilege while also being committed to fighting it.

    CreswellFrance and and the Trachtenberg German Question France and the German Question, 1945–1955 ✣ What role did France play in the Cold War, and how is French policy in that conºict to be understood? For many years the prevailing as- sumption among scholars was that French policy was not very important. France, as the historian John Young points out, was “usually mentioned in Cold War histories only as an aside.” When the country was discussed at all, he notes, it was “often treated as a weak and vacillating power, obsessed with outdated ideas of a German ‘menace.’”1 And indeed scholars often explicitly argued (to quote one typical passage) that during the early Cold War period “the major obsession of French policy was defense against the German threat.” “French awareness of the Russian threat,” on the other hand, was sup- posedly “belated and reluctant.”2 The French government, it was said, was not eager in the immediate postwar period to see a Western bloc come into being to balance Soviet power in Europe; the hope instead was that France could serve as a kind of bridge between East and West.3 The basic French aim, according to this interpretation, was to keep Germany down by preserving the wartime alliance intact. Germany itself would no longer be a centralized state; the territory on the left bank of the Rhine would not even be part of Germany; the Ruhr basin, Germany’s industrial heartland, would be subject to allied control.     92 THE DECLARATION OF THE 121 ROBERT BARRAT An editor of the Left-wing Catholic periodical l Temoinage Chretien1 EARLY in September, the large Paris dailies received in their post a four-page statement, printed on fine paper, and headed 'Declaration on the Right to Disobedience in the Algerian War.'* The statement was signed by 121 personalities from the academic world, literature and the arts, among them writers like Jean-Paul Sartre, Andre Breton, Simone de Beauvoir, Vercors, Arthur Adamou, Marguerite Duras and Jean-Louis Bory; film-makers and actors like Alain Resnais, Alain Cuny, Roger Blin, Simone Signoret; university professors Theodore Monod, Andre Mandouze, P. Vidal-Naquet, Michel Leiris; painters like Pignon, Masson, Marc Saint-Saens, Lapoujade; and musicians like Pierre Boulez. My own name was there, and those of other, more significant figures. The Left intelligentsia was publishing its attitude to the Algerian War. And this attitude was candidly subversive. The Algerian War, the manifesto argued, is senseless. It is not a national war, as the Algerian army in no way threatens the conquest of France. It is neither a civil war nor a war of con­ quest, since it has been recognized that the Algerian people have the right of self-determination. At first presented to the public as a police action, it has tended more and more to become an operation of the army, which seeks to secure caste interests, which has made an institution of torture in Algeria and has taken up a position of open or latent revolt against democratic insti­ tutions. In these circumstances it is reasonable that many French­ men should come to question the validity of their traditional duties; either by refusing to take up arms against the Algerian people, or by bringing help and protection to the Algerians who are being oppressed in the name of the French people.

He was the first well-known painter in modern Iraq and the leader of realism school in Iraq. He studied military science and art at the Military College, Istanbul, Turkey, (then the capital of the Ottoman Empire) from 1904. He studied art and painting in the European traditional style and became a landscape painter, he painted many landscapes of Iraq in the realism style, using shading and composition to suggest time periods. He was a major figure among the first generation of modern Iraqi artists and was a member of the Art Friends Society (AFS, Jami’yat Asdiqa’ al- Fen). A collection of his work is hung in The Pioneers Museum, Baghdad. A prolific painter of oils, the majority of his works are now in private hands.
