  • Maintaining a Musical Tradition in Arab-America: an Oral History of Abdel Karim Bader
MAINTAINING A MUSICAL TRADITION IN ARAB-AMERICA: AN ORAL HISTORY OF ABDEL KARIM BADER By Igor Nunes Houwat A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Musicology 2011 ABSTRACT MAINTAINING A MUSICAL TRADITION IN ARAB-AMERICA: AN ORAL HISTORY OF ABDEL KARIM BADER By Igor Nunes Houwat Abdel Karim Bader, a cosmopolitan oud performer and teacher, was born in the Arab world in the early 1920s and immigrated to the United States of America in the early nineteen seventies. This thesis is an oral history that explores Bader as a carrier of an Arabic musical tradition, tarab, through three topics: biography, pedagogy, and improvisation. Bader’s biography unveils a rich social and musical persona which is understood through the lens of tarab musicianship and values. He favors a pragmatic apprenticeship method, common to tarab musicians, that heavily relies on oral methods to transmit ideas, repertoire, and stylistic subtleties. Finally, Bader’s improvisatory thought is influenced by both his knowledge of Arabic music theory and his performance experience, and it is exposed through examples from my lessons and an analysis of a solo improvisation. I have been Bader’s apprentice since January 2010 and view this study as a contribution to a little-known facet of Arab-American identity and cultural practice. • Letter from the Director: Nkbci Covid-19 Coping Plan
ISSUE 18 - SUMMER 2020 LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR: NKBCI COVID-19 COPING PLAN The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak suspended many of our daily functions in life. While the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute remained operational at all times, certain coping plan mechanisms had to be implemented. We, therefore, wanted to provide a brief summary about how our clinical and research operations were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and how we coped with the forthcoming changes. When it comes to cancer treatment, we remain committed to providing the highest level of care and compassion to our all cancer patients. However, studies showed that the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is by limiting and minimizing our exposure to other individuals. To that end, several clinical interventions were adopted during this pandemic: • Appointment booking: All patients are screened before booking their appointments to ensure they have no travel history and no encounter with a CORONAVIRUS infected patient. • Deferrals were done for patients who had a positive answer • Reduction of clinic slots for Hematologist Oncologist: This was applied after the decrease in patient volume. It allowed clinic assistants and tellers a more flexible schedule for alterations. • WEBEX meetings: All Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards were done through WEBEX to respect physical distancing. • Handling NSSF: In the infusion, NSSF issue was resolved in terms of availing “MOUAFAKA MOUAKHARA” for patients on the spot as well as availing the needed medical report to justify the admission of the patients. Communication was done with the patient access department to get it through an online solution that NSSF has provided.

  • COVID-19 Chronological Eulogies
Twenty-Six Eulogies for Victims of Covid On March 14th, 2021, Zen Mountain Monastery held a memorial service marking a year since the beginning of the shutdown, the official start of the pandemic. At that point, Covid-19 had claimed 2.6 million lives around the world. One aspect of the memorial was the reading of eulogies for 26 of the dead; people we identified through various news sources and, in some cases, word of mouth. Here, briefly, are their stories. Liu Shouxiang died of the coronavirus on Feb. 13, 2020 in Wuhan, at the age of 61. Mr. Liu studied and went on to teach at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, where he helped establish a watercolor major, and eventually, a stand-alone department dedicated to the medium. Though widely respected by colleagues, he didn’t seek a reputation for his work, fearing it wasn’t good enough to put on display. Regardless, the Wuhan Art Museum gave him a solo show—his first—in 2019, just months before the pandemic began. A close friend of his, Wang Chenghao, said that Liu Shouxiang's paintings "still had not met his own high requirements." Manu Dibango was born in Cameroon but lived most of his life in France. Although Mr. Dibanjo started training in classical piano at 15, he was drawn to jazz, and began playing saxophone in his 20s. Ten years later, he was the frontman of his own band in Paris. Mr. Dibanjo’s prolific musical output ranged from jazz to reggae, pop, and hip-hop. He is best known for the single “Soul Makossa,” which became immensely popular at the start of the disco era.
