Negotiations are being scheduled at the Detroit Marriott Hotel and Sportservice @Comerica Park. After months of negotiations, contracts were ratifi ed at the MGM Grand, Greektown and MotorCity Casinos. Our members at the Westin Airport Hotel, the Detroit Metropolitain Hotel and MET Troy are still involved in tough negotiations. Unfair labor practice charges have been fi led against the Detroit Metropolitain Hotel and MET Troy. Members at LSG SkyChefs, as part of national bargaining, have been organizing to be released from mediation and secure the right to strike, if needed. Negotiations are scheduled to begin for our members at the Hyatt Hotel in December. The contract expires December 31st. A number of club contracts have now been ratifi ed, including the Detroit Club Managers Association Contract. Club contracts were also ratifi ed at Bloomfi eld Hills Country Club, Forest Lake Country Club, and Meadowbrook Country Club. Negotiations are continuing with Country Club of Detroit. • The Greening of Golf
3 Waging a war on pests: golf comes to America Having established our theoretical foundation, we begin this chapter in the early 1900s, at a time not long after golf had migrated to North America from the other side of the Atlantic. Golf’s official history in North America begins in 1873 with the foundation of the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada (The Royal Montreal Golf Club, 2011). Fifteen years later, the first American course was formed in Yonkers, New York (see PGA.com, 2013). The journey from Europe to Canada and the United States was surely not the first moment at which golf spiralled together with the forces of globalization. The Royal Calcutta Golf Club, for example, still considers itself “the home of golf in India”, having been founded in 1829 and conferred the title ‘Royal’ at the start of the next cen- tury (The Royal Calcutta Golf Club., n.d.). But our analysis in this chapter begins from the premise that golf’s journey to North America, and especially the United States, is particularly important when considering the game’s overall history – and its environmental impact. Although golf’s origins are contested, Scotland is commonly presumed to be the birthplace of the game. Scotland is, if nothing else, the site of one of golf’s more famous stories: King James II’s attempt to ban golf on the grounds that it was distracting the masses from their archery practice (British Golf Museum, n.d.). This was an injunction destined to fail. In 1552, as Campbell 2002( ) recounts, “the citizens of the town of St Andrews [Scotland] were given, by charter right, the use of the links for ‘golf, futball, shuteing at all times with other manners of pastime’ ” (Campbell, 2002: 15).

  • 2018 Centennial Year in Review.Pdf
THE CANADIAN SENIORS’ GOLF ASSOCIATION CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SENIORS GOLF 1918-2018 s we head into the next Century of CSGA golf, there is Aplenty to be thankful for. We are now concluding a very busy year for our Association. For 100 years the Canadian Seniors’ Golf Association has been a center for golfers age 55+ to meet new people and establish life long friendships Canada-wide. The CSGA was founded on May 18th, 1918 with the first Annual Tournament being held at Royal Montreal Golf Club that September. The 2018 Centennial event at Rosedale Golf Club and Scarboro Golf and Country Club (both founding CSGA Clubs) was no different than the previous 100 with a group of Senior Men coming together to enjoy each other’s company for a few days. The original field of 81 far exceeded the Association’s expectations. This year the CSGA hosted 300 players from CSGA President, Mike Jackson across the country on the two courses. The CSGA is a National Association that has members from coast to coast. There are 789 active members including 155 emeritus members who are represented. We continue to have a strong wait list that is reviewed annually. The CSGA celebrated its Centennial throughout 2018 starting with the publication of our Centennial Book, written by London based author Jeffrey Reed. Jeffrey, Ian Gibson (Executive Director), Sheila Johnston (Secretary) and Jim Fraser (CSGA and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame Member) completed extensive research at Golf Canada archives to source essential resource content and photos for the book. And canvassed many golf clubs in Canada for historical material.

ANA GO HAVERS POINTS OUT FAULTS Arthur Havers, former British Open Champion, points oul‘someof the very common errors in golf as follows : / A stiff position with the body and legs during the stance and swing 2. Starting the club down before it has been steadied at the parallel position at the top of the swing. 3 Throwing the arms and wrists out too quickly in the down-swing, a very common fault, thus beginning the hit long before reaching the ball 4 Turning too quickly from the hips, coming down, thus causing the arms and hands to cross the intended direction and thereby getting only about half the power behindthe ball 5. Moving head and body forward before the club head gets near the ball. All the power from the right side of the body is lost in this way 6 Remaining on the right side of the foot too long when coming down This prevents the previous weight of the body from coming into the shot March, 1928 CANADIAN GOLFER Vol. 13, No. 11 Successjul All Round the World SY S8Q, ee> w ee ee & ‘ SK KK FF Ly wS& \QoQs’$ Soy 8Ss SSSPSYK ASs as Sov dNsy In every Department of the game the Silver King Ball is superlative.
