His satirical exploration of the nature of human sociability and economic prosperity infuriated his contemporary critics and deeply influenced the ideas of later Enlightenment philosophes. One of the most persistent questions about Mandeville's work concerns the sincerity of his declarations of Christian piety. Mandeville is commonly identified as a deist. This thesis explores the possibility that he was an atheist. The question is examined through an analysis of Mandeville’s major influences, most notably French Jansenism, Epicureanism, Scepticism, erudite libertinism, and Dutch republicanism. Key figures that Mandeville engaged with in his writings include Pierre Bayle, René Descartes, Shaftesbury, Thomas Hobbes, Pierre Nicole, and Pierre Gassendi. In the process of discussing Mandeville’s putative atheism, the methodological problem of researching and identifying atheism in early-modern Europe is explored. iv Table of Contents Supervisory New Understandings of the Historical Figure of Jesus in Modern Age Is generally affirmed that the history of the research on the historical Jesus begins with H.S.Reimarus on the influence of Deism and Enlightenment (an idea that rests on a book published more than a century ago by A. Schweitzer1) and that is characterized by a series of phases or stages that culminate in the “last quest”. The aim of these pages is to present a critique of both these opinions. In fact, the tentative to reconstruct an image of Jesus independently from the theological interpretations of the Churches is already attested at the beginnings of the fifteenth century. Secondly, the history of the research must be understood not in the frame of a linear historical evolution that proceeds by subsequent phases, but in the light of a social history that takes into considerations the constant conflicting attitudes of different coexisting intellectual and academic institutions of Modern Age: Catholic theological Faculties, Protestant theological Faculties, and independent academic institutions and scholars. The first condition that made it possible a new historical research on Jesus was humanism which emphasized reading texts in the original language and which, starting at the beginning of the fourteenth century, influenced biblical research by bringing in a new understanding of early Christian concepts (for example metanoia versus poenitentia) in light of the Jewish and Greek cultures in which they were produced.

Only the very learned (or the very fool- hardy) dare to enter upon this great killing-ground of the history of ideas. Recent intense concern with these controversies means that we can no longer reasonably expect the discovery of significant new facts. The emphasis has shifted to inter- preting what is already known about these episodes and the setting in which they occurred. This is a highly desirable state of affairs, for the Newton-Leibniz controversies crystallize a number of issues of general significance. What is the proper interpretation of the relations between natural philosophy, mathe- matics, metaphysics, theology, and the social and political setting in which these matters were disputed? The elementary anatomy of the controversies is well known.

Neal Washington, D.C. 2012 The Providential Nature of Politics in the Thought of Jonathan Edwards Coyle Neal, Ph.D. Director: Claes Ryn, Ph.D. Despite the obvious importance of Jonathan Edwards in American history, scholars have largely ignored his relevance for political thought. To ignore him is to miss a critical component in early American political philosophy and to have a skewed understanding of the subsequent history of revivals and revivalism that have shaped religion, politics, and philosophy in America. This dissertation addresses this oversight. It situates Edwards among American political thinkers and shows him to be an important piece in the American political tradition. This dissertation argues that for Jonathan Edwards politics is deeply historical in nature. He has a strong historical sense that is indistinguishable from his notion of Providence. The dissertation concludes that—in line with his theology, ethics, aesthetics, and metaphysics—the political philosophy of Jonathan Edwards is fundamentally historical and more akin to that of Burke, Hegel, Adams and other “conservative” thinkers than it is to Rousseau, Paine, and other revolutionary thinkers. The dissertation examines Edwards’ own writings as well as important secondary sources and interpretations of his work. It uses a traditional hermeneutical technique to systematize his social and political ideas and to draw out implications for political thought from his ostensibly non-political theological and philosophical writings.

    COUNTER-ENTHUSIASMS: THE RATIONALIZATION OF FALSE PROPHECY IN EARLY ENLIGHTENMENT ENGLAND By William Cook Miller A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May, 2016 ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on the historical problem of false prophecy—or, more generally, the need to distinguish legitimate from illegitimate forms of contact with the divine—as it influences then-innovative and now-pervasive attitudes toward language and knowledge in early enlightenment England. Against the prevalent senses that the history of popular religion can be characterized either in terms of false consciousness or disenchantment, I argue that the vernacular Bible empowered unauthorized subjects (the poor, women, heterodox thinkers) to challenge dominant English culture in the theological vocabulary of the prophet. This power led to a reaction—which I call counter-enthusiasm—which both polemicized popular prophets as “enthusiasts” beyond the reach of reason, and developed new categorical understandings of experience in order to redefine relations of spirit, body, and word so as to avoid the problem of unlicensed spiritual authority. I concentrate on three counter-enthusiasms—as articulated by Henry More, John Locke, and Jonathan Swift—which fundamentally rethink the links between humanity, divinity, and language, in light of--and in the ironically occupied guise of—the figure of the enthusiast. I argue further that the discourse of enthusiasm contributed centrally to the process known as “the rationalization of society,” which involved the distinction of the categories of self, society, and nature.     THE PHILOSOPHICAL CONTEXT OF HERMANN SAMUEL REIMARUS’ RADICAL BIBLE CRITICISM Jonathan Israel Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694–1768), philologist, Bible critic, and phi- losopher, was in no doubt himself as to the severity of his philologico- philosophical assault on the Christian religion. At one point he suggests that Celsus and Porphyry themselves could scarcely have sharpened it any further;1 and even more acerbic was his attack on the Jewish legacy to humanity. While it is true that in the early sections of his Apologie Reimarus recounts his estrangement from Christianity, and Christianity’s inheritance from the Jews, as a gradual process of doubt and questioning, driven principally by textual and philological concerns, it is equally true that in the later stages of his intellectual evolution he built his general outlook around what he saw as an all-encompassing and surpassing prin- ciple of ‘reason’. ‘Reason’ he holds aloft and extols, but also very closely entwines with what he sees as the general progress of philosophy in the history of the world. In a remarkable passage in which he asserts that philosophy bequeathed more to the development of the Christian religion than the latter ever gave to philosophy, he contends that the history of religion proves beyond all doubt the indispensability of philosophy to the progress of morality and indeed religion itself. ‘Die Lehre von der Einheit Gottes’, he points out, by way of example, ‘und dessen Anbetung ohne Bilder, welche Moses aus der geheimen Weissheit der Egyptischen Priester mitgebracht hatte, aber ohne vernünftige Gründe bloss als ein Gebot vortrug, hatte bey den Israel- iten nicht eher Eingang, als bis sie in der Gefangenschaft mit vernünftigen Heyden umgegangen waren.’2 But what kind of philosophy did Reimarus embrace? Philosophically, he was undoubtedly something of a hybrid fijigure, with one foot, or part of a foot, in the Radical Enlightenment, and the other, or one and a half feet, in the moderate Enlightenment.
