A Summer of Sport!

WOW what a fantastic summer for disability sport in ! The Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow and featured the biggest ever number of Para-sport medal events in the history of the games! Team Scotland had a total of 22 Para athletes, directors, pilots and guides across all five Para sports which included Athletics, Swimming, Lawn Bowls, Power-lifting and Track Cycling. They all did amazingly and won Scotland a total of 7 medals - 3 gold, 3 silver & 1 bronze! 94% of the athletes made it to the final of their events which is an incredible achievement. Once again we got to witness our local athlete Neil Fachie winning gold (twice!) and we also got to cheer on another local athlete Lewis Clow running the 100m (T37)!! Pauline Stirling from Grampian Disability Sport won the Glasgow Trophy for Service to Sport and Neil Fachie took home the Angus Award for sportsman of the year! Congratulations to all of our award winners! BP Inspired in Sport 2014! Dundee Discovery Games 2014 A fantastic day was had by all at the Beach Leisure Centre on Friday 29th of August for the Inspire and BP Inclusive Sports Day. The people supported by Inspire and interns from BP were split up into teams and each team competed in Basketball, Boccia, Indoor Curling and Football. The scores were counted and the winning team was revealed at the BBQ and awards ceremony back at Cafe Coast where David Lynch (Vice President, Resources BP) and Karen Arthur (Inspire CEO) presented the medals. Team 3 were the overall winners, well done guys! We’s like to say a big Thank You to BP for funding the event and giving the people support by Inspire the Swimming: opportunity to try out new sports and have such a great 20 swimmers from the newly formed Grampian day out. Table Tennis: The Grampian squad had a very successful tournament tournament with only one member failing to get a medal. Workshop a great success Special thanks to Alex Rae for organising the transport. Sunday 31st August saw the first Inclusive Swimming Workshop run in Grampian. With the support of the George Keith, Participant Highland swimming coaches and swimmers, Grampian were able to deliver the workshop to twenty swimming Boccia: coaches from Grampian and Highland. This was the final tournament of the 2013-14 league and so was also the decider for the League Winners and Runner-ups. Anna Ritchie won the Special School League with Bucksburn coming runner- up. Deveronvale Football Festival The North Region Secondary Schools 2014-15 League for children with additional support needs kicked off on Thursday 2nd October with Deveronvale Football Club hosting our first festival. Luckily we got a sunny day for this first 5 a-side tournament where support for learner’s bases and special school teams from Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City fought it out in a close competition at Princess Royal Park, Banff. Two finals were played on the day with Anna Ritchie School winning the special schools tournament and Bucksburn clinching victory over Cordyce in the SFL tournament.
