Residency Programs
Family medicine residency programs offered through Memorial University are divided based on region;
● Eastern ● Rural - Central ● Rural - Western ● Labrador ● Nunavut srpc.ca/ student
Eastern
Residents matched to the Eastern stream will experience medical practice in our most urban setting, as well as the opportunity to work in rural regions along the east coast of Newfoundland.
This stream offers a balance between the clinical experiences and common issues faced in urban versus rural practice.
Training Sites: St. John’s, Bay Bulls, Torbay, Paradise, Upper Island Cove, Harbour Grace, Carbonear, Clarenville, Burin, Port Blandford Western
There are a variety of rural teaching sites within the Western stream, allowing residents to experience many diverse areas of the Island.
Work within a family practice in both rural and urban centers, gaining exposure to trauma and remote medicine.
Training Sites: Bonne Bay, Corner Brook, Port aux Basques, Stephenville, Deer Lake, Pasadena
Economy/Industry: Fishing, Pulp and Paper Mill. Logging, Hospital is main employer
Recreation: Gros Morne National Park, Hiking, Sports Complex, Downhill and Cross Country Skiing, Boating, Rich Arts Community
Special Features: Lots of one-on-one learning opportunities, small learner to preceptor ratio, Options for longitudinal exposure to extra skills.
Central
Residents in the central stream receive rural family medicine training based out of communities and towns in Central NL over two years of training.
Training Sites: Baie Verte, Botwood, Brookfield, Fogo Island, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Twillingate
Economy/Industry: Fishing, Mining, Manufacturing, Oil refinery
Recreation: Outdoor recreation, Boating activities, Whale watching
Special Features: Lots of one-on-one learning opportunities. Small communities with broad-scope practices. NorFam (Labrador)
For residents in the NorFam stream, the longitudinal integrated portion of the program takes place in Happy Valley- Goose Bay. There, they will gain extensive exposure to rural medicine, including flight medicine and remote opportunity.
Economy/Industry: Military airbase, NL Hydro, Government service
Recreation: Lakes, rivers, kayaking, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, hiking in the Big Land
Special Features: Lots of one-on-one learning opportunities. Small communities with broad-scope practices.
NunaFam (Nunavut)
Residents will complete their first year of training within various training sites in Newfoundland and sister sites in New Brunswick.
During their second year, they will complete a six month rural family medicine rotation in Iqaluit, Nunavut. This rotation includes the opportunity to travel to coastal and remote communities, to gain exposure to the specific challenges faced in this setting.
Economy/Industry: Government; Mining
Recreation: Going out on the land; kayaking, hiking; snowmobiling
Cultural notes: Inuit population throughout Nunavut; Iqaluit is 40% other ethnicities; Hub of the North
Special Features: Regional referral centre with visiting specialists; referrals out to Ottawa Additional Training
