• JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911-1963) Music Publisher
JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911•1963) Music publisher, booking agent, long•time manager of the Grand Ole Opry, and promoter of Nashville’s music industry, was born in Buffalo Valley, Putnam County, TN. As a young man, Denny found work as a mail clerk with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, parent organization to WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. With growing interest in country music, Denny was running the WSM Artists Service Bureau by 1946, booking Opry talent and other WSM acts. Denny eventually managed the Grand Ole Opry itself. Denny, along with his predecessor, Jack Stapp, is responsible for updating the face of the Opry. As promoters and developers of talent, they helped to transform the Opry from a popular barn dance to a showcase of country superstars, ensuring its growth and long•term success. During their tenure, the cast grew enormously, most major stars became Opry members, and an Opry appearance became a must goal for many performers. In 1954 Denny and Opry star Webb Pierce formed Cedarwood Publishing Company, for a time the most important publishing house in Nashville. Driftwood Music, a companion firm, was a partnership between Denny and Carl Smith, another Opry star. These business interests led to conflict of interest allegations by WSM and eventually Denny’s dismissal. With his knowledge of WSM operations, Denny achieved immediate success as a booking agent. The Jim Denny Bureau served most of the artists Denny had signed while at the Opry. Billboard magazine estimated that, by 1961, the bureau was handling over 3,300 personal appearances worldwide.

  • 1957 and 1961, Both My Life and Career
1957 and 1961, both my life and career began to take shape under the tutelage of legendary Billboard music editor Paul Ackerman and then-chart editor Tom Noonan, who first opened the magazine’s doors to a fifteen-year-old kid. At that time, Billboard was certainly the com munications center of the music industry, and what I learned and saw and heard there has indeed served me well over the years. Far and away the monumental event - and one of the most important moments in my life - was meeting Syd Nathan at a Billboard record-review session one drizzly Wednesday night in March or April 1958. A lthough i had a french test coming up, Paul urged me to stay by saying, “This guy is one of the great indie record men a real character. He can’t see very well and wears these thick, will be around. We’ll listen to those next week. Syd, let’s have Coca-Cola-bottle glasses, has a big ring on his finger and talks your records.” Syd got up and threw his records - fortunately, with a deep, raspy voice due to previous illnesses, but you just unbreakable 45s - on the floor and said, “Y)u don’t step on a man must meet him. He’ll be overwhelmed by your knowledge of when he’s down. Listen to Jerry Blaine’s records, and you can save C&W and R&B, and you will understand and love him and see mine for next week.” Needless to say, a ll the records were what he is all about.” Paul was right: That meeting changed my reviewed, including ones by Little Willie John on Syd’s label King life and destiny and is probably the reason I am able to write a and the Cadillacs on Josie.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

  • UPDATED & REVISED 5 EDITION* Cover Design by Bob Mcgrath
UPDATED & REVISED 5th EDITION* Cover design by Bob McGrath CAJUN RECORDS 1946-1989 – A DISCOGRAPHY © Nick Leigh 2019 INTRODUCTION TO THE REVISED EDITIONS I began collecting blues records in 1959 but it was another 7 years before I heard Cleveland Crochet & the Sugar Bees on the Storyville anthology “Louisiana Blues”. My appetite whetted, I wanted more. Buying the Iry Le Jeune LPs on Goldband a few months later (not one but two volumes – and purchased as imports on a student’s allowance!) fuelled an appreciation of Cajun music that has remained undiminished. In the mid 1960s, however, there was little information available about the great music I was listening to, other than the catalogues I obtained from Goldband and Swallow, and the early articles by Mike Leadbitter and John Broven in “Blues Unlimited” and “Jazz Journal”. Thanks to people like Mike, John, Neil Slaven, Rob Ford and Les Fancourt there is now a lot of information available to provide the background to blues and rhythm & blues recordings. However much of the information about the post World War 2 music of South Louisiana in general and the French (Cajun) recordings in particular, remains elusive. So far as I know no single ‘discography’ of post-war Cajun record releases has been published and I thought I would try to correct this oversight. This is notwithstanding the increasing amount of well researched material about the music in general and individual artists. Therefore I take only limited credit for the information included herein about the recordings. My aim has been to bring that material together in a single document.

Raising the Bar: The Reciprocal Roles and Deviant Distinctions of Music and Alcohol in Acadiana by © Marion MacLeod A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Ethnomusicology Memorial University of Newfoundland June, 2013 St. John 's, Newfoundland ABSTRACT The role of alcohol in musical settings is regularly relegated to that of incidental by stander, but its pervasive presence as object, symbol or subject matter in Acadian and Cajun performance contexts highlights its constructive capacity in the formation of Acadian and Cajun musical worlds. Individual and collective attitudes towards alcohol consumption implicate a wide number of cultural domains which, in this work, include religious display, linguistic development, respect for social conventions, and the historically-situated construction of identities. This research uses alcohol as an interpretive lens for ethnomusicological understanding and, in so doing, questions the binaries of marginal and mainstream, normal and deviant, sacred and profane, traditional and contemporary, sober and inebriated. Attitudes towards alcohol are informed by, and reflected in, all ofthese cultural conflicts, highlighting how agitated such categorizations can be in lived culture. Throughout the dissertation, I combine the historical examples of HatTy Choates and Cy aMateur with ethnographic examinations of culturally-distinct perfonnative habits, attitudes toward Catholicism, and compositional qualities. Compiling often incongruous combinations of discursive descriptions and enacted displays, my research suggests that opposition actually confirms interdependence. Central to this study is an assertion that levels of cultural competence in Cajun Louisiana and Acadian Nova Scotia are uneven and that the repercussions of this unevenness are musically and behaviourally demonstrated.
