JUNIOR TAS SPORT (WEEK 4 TERM 3)

All 18 Junior TAS Football and Basketball teams were in action in Round 2 last Saturday. It was another wonderful morning of sport at and our home teams certainly did not fail to put on a show. Some memorable and very skilful goals on the football pitch were matched by typical Redback grit and determination on the concrete of the Junior School courts.

Our Junior TAS Football teams put on a clinic over the weekend, winning seven and losing only two matches in a great show of depth across all year levels. A clean sweep for our Year 4 teams was a highlight of the round, as was a wonderful Round 2 performance from Mr Edhouse’s Year 6 side. A classic right foot strike from Jonathon Yeabsley (6SM) was the exclamation mark on a 6 – 2 victory over CHAC Blue.

Another tough round for our Junior TAS Basketball teams offered an opportunity for further skill development against some very strong opposition. Playing more teams from JPC and Sheldon was always going to be a challenge and those teams stepped up to the plate. The Junior Open Girls were up against a Sheldon College outfit that put 70 points on St Paul’s in Round 1, so the 46 – 18 loss was a great effort against a team of club players. The Year 5 Girls managed to reverse the ledger against their Sheldon opposition with a huge 20 point win over the local rivals.

Term 3 is always very enjoyable, with so many teams to follow throughout the season. We will once again have 18 teams on show across the Greater Brisbane Region this weekend. Look out for the seven home basketball matches in the Somerset Sports Centre on Showcase Day this Saturday, running from 8.00am until 12.00pm. Good luck to all teams!

JUNIOR TAS ATHLETICS TRAINING

Junior TAS Athletics training is underway, with impressive participation so far. I would encourage any students in Year 3 – 6 who are pushing for selection in the Junior TAS Athletics Team to make their way down to training. Please note that these training sessions are not necessarily for everyone and only those students who are genuinely interested in pursuing athletics should attend. The weekly training schedule can be found below.

Tuesday @ 7:15am – Shot Put & Long Jump Wednesday @ 7:15am – 100m, 200m & 800m Thursday @ 7:15am – 100m, 200m, 800m, Discus & High Jump

The Junior TAS Athletics Carnival is on Friday 8 September. Selection for this carnival will be based upon results from the Interhouse Athletics Carnival, training commitment and a possible selection trial. I will keep everyone posted about this.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

In 2015 the Team of the Week concept was created to recognise students who display admirable qualities whilst representing Ormiston College. Each round there will be a Team of the Week named from our Saturday fixtures. Players can be nominated based on five different criteria which align with the ethos of Junior TAS Sport which has a focus on skill development, participation and enjoyment. These criteria include:

Sportsmanship: Shows great sportsmanship towards their opposition, teammates, coaches and referees. Teamwork: Strives to include every member of the team. This could be through good gameplay, communication or just showing encouragement. Redback Spirit: Tries their hardest to do their very best right throughout the game. May not score the most points or goals, but is giving their very best for the team. Outstanding Skill: Shows great skill and ability throughout the game. Improvement: Always listens to their coach and is therefore showing great improvement week to week.

The coaches from each team will nominate two players to be put forward for Team of the Week. One of these nominations will be included in either the Basketball Team of the Week or the Football Team of the Week. All nominations will be added up to go towards the Team of the Term which will named and recognised at the end of Term 3.

Please find the Round 2 Team of the Week below.
