ALL WHITES/ BROTHERS RLFC Team of the Century ALL WHITES/ BROTHERS RLFC team of the century. • Key Challenges & Responsibilities of the Churches in the Current Social
CHRISTIAN SOCIAL THINKING FOR AUSTRALIA: MAKING A DIFFERENCE? Key challenges & responsibilities of the churches in the current social & cultural context Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO The Oratory, Newman College, University of Melbourne 8 November 2013 1. The challenge I am honoured to accept the invitation from the Yarra Institute for Religion & Social Policy to deliver the keynote address of this conference on Christian social thinking. You have gathered to ask the hopefully rhetorical and self-evident question whether you are making a difference. Fr Bruce Duncan, Director of the Institute, has asked me to address ‘the challenges and responsibilities of the churches in the current social, ecumenical and cultural context, especially about engaging positively in helping promote human wellbeing in Australia and beyond’. Tomorrow, seven representatives of various Christian denominations will respond to my remarks in the light of their social traditions, identifying what is specific to them, and how their traditions could best contribute to a fair and inclusive society. I am delighted to be back here on the College Crescent at Melbourne University, having received my very ecumenical theological training in these surrounds at the United Faculty of Theology. I will of course speak largely from my own experience and tradition which is Catholic and Jesuit. I have one major reservation about undertaking this task. My training is in law; I know little about economics. Sadly, I think the Christian churches are all but absent from the economic debate other than making the occasional, predictable utterance about ensuring that no one is left worse off as the result of new policy measures.

The Timorese Government also claims Australia has cheated East Timor of the benefits of its rich resources. The minister has revealed the East Timorese quietly sought a response from Australia last December, but when its approach was ignored, it sought international arbitration. As Conor Duffy reports, East Timor says the revenue in the treaty is crucial for its future. CONOR DUFFY, REPORTER: In Dili in 2004, the cabinet of the newest country in the world met to work on a deal that could make or break its future. At stake was $40 billion of revenue from the Greater Sunrise gas field, 100 kilometres off the East Timorese coast and about 400 kilometres from Australia.

The Trophy CabINeT Guy Hansen Rugby league is a game that teaches you lessons. My big lesson Looking back to those days I realise that football was very much came in 1976 when the mighty Parramatta Eels were moving in part of the fabric of the Sydney in which I grew up. The possibility a seemingly unstoppable march towards premiership glory. As of grand final glory provided an opportunity for communities to a 12-year-old, the transformation of Parramatta from perennial take pride in the achievements of the local warriors who went cellar-dwellers was a formative event. I had paid my dues with into battle each weekend. Winning the premiership for the first fortnightly visits to Cumberland Oval and was confident that a time signalled the coming of age for a locality and caused scenes Parramatta premiership victory was just around the corner. In the of wild celebration. Parramatta’s victory over Newtown in 1981 week before the grand final I found myself sitting on a railway saw residents of Sydney’s western city spill onto the streets in bridge above Church Street, Parramatta, watching Ray Higgs, a spontaneous outpouring of joy. Children waved flags from the the legendary tackling machine and Parramatta captain, lead family car while Dad honked the horn. 19 May 2004 Legislative Assembly 1175 WEDNESDAY, 19 MAY 2004 Legislative Assembly Mr SPEAKER (Hon. R.K. Hollis, Redcliffe) read prayers and took the chair at 9.30 a.m. PRIVILEGE District Health Councils; Comments by Member for Burnett Hon. G.R. NUTTALL (Sandgate—ALP) (Minister for Health) (9.31 a.m.): I rise on a matter of privilege. I have disturbing information this morning about the conduct of a member of this House who has threatened a community volunteer who helps to run one of Queensland's independent district health councils. As most members would be aware, I have asked district health councils to take on a broader role this term in encouraging more Queenslanders to take an active role in the hospitals and health centres in their communities. This is about encouraging communities to have more ownership of their local health care services. Of their own accord, the chair of the Bundaberg District Health Council wrote to the editor of the Bundaberg News Mail last week on behalf of all district council members to refute constant and unsubstantiated claims by the member for Burnett, Mr Rob Messenger, that the Bundaberg Hospital was in crisis. The chairman, Mr Viv Chase, with the permission of members made public the phone numbers of every member of the council stating the council wished to take a proactive role in health care and would be happy to assist patients and local residents with any issue they maybe experiencing. On the same day, last Thursday, the member for Burnett, in what I can only describe as a cowardly and despicable act, phoned the council chairman and in a veiled threat against Mr Chase and his family called him an apologist for Queensland Health. The member for Burnett then went on to tell Mr Chase, and I quote from a letter from Mr Chase— I will now turn up the blowtorch and you will be included and I will contact all your members of Council to tell them the same.
