This article uses the case of pregnancy testing in Britain to investigate the process whereby new and often controversial reproductive technologies are made visible and normal- ized in mainstream entertainment media. It shows how in the 1980s and 1990s the then nascent product placement industry was instrumental in embedding pregnancy testing in British cinema and television’s dramatic productions. In this period, the pregnancy-test close- up became a conventional trope and the thin blue lines associated with Unilever’s Clearblue rose to prominence in mainstream consumer culture. This article investigates the aestheticiza- tion of pregnancy testing and shows how increasingly visible public concerns about ‘schoolgirl mums’, abortion and the biological clock, dramatized on the big and small screen, propelled the commercial rise of Clearblue. It argues that the Clearblue close-up ambiguously concealed as much as it revealed; abstraction, ambiguity and flexibility were its keys to success. Unilever first marketed the leading Clearblue brand of home pregnancy test in the mid- 1980s. Since then home pregnancy tests have become a ubiquitous and highly familiar reproductive technology and diagnostic tool.

    THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH SATELLITE BROADCASTING POLICY, 1977-1992 Windsor John Holden —......., Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of PhD University of Leeds, Institute of Communications Studies July, 1998 The candidate confirms that the work submitted is his own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the work of others ABSTRACT This thesis traces the development of British satellite broadcasting policy, from the early proposals drawn up by the Home Office following the UK's allocation of five direct broadcast by satellite (DBS) frequencies at the 1977 World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC), through the successive, abortive DBS initiatives of the BBC and the "Club of 21", to the short-lived service provided by British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB). It also details at length the history of Sky Television, an organisation that operated beyond the parameters of existing legislation, which successfully competed (and merged) with BSB, and which shaped the way in which policy was developed. It contends that throughout the 1980s satellite broadcasting policy ceased to drive and became driven, and that the failure of policy-making in this time can be ascribed to conflict on ideological, governmental and organisational levels.   • Mothers on Mothers: Maternal Readings of Popular Television
    From Supernanny to Gilmore Girls, from Katie Price to Holly Willoughby, a MOTHERS ON wide range of examples of mothers and motherhood appear on television today. Drawing on questionnaires completed by mothers across the UK, this MOTHERS ON MOTHERS book sheds new light on the varied and diverse ways in which expectant, new MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION and existing mothers make sense of popular representations of motherhood on television. The volume examines the ways in which these women find pleasure, empowerment, escapist fantasy, displeasure and frustration in popular depictions of motherhood. The research seeks to present the MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION voice of the maternal audience and, as such, it takes as its starting REBECCA FEASEY point those maternal depictions and motherwork representations that are highlighted by this demographic, including figures such as Tess Daly and Katie Hopkins and programmes like TeenMom and Kirstie Allsopp’s oeuvre. The research objectives were as follows: •To explore the frequency of alcohol use on British soaps aired on non-satellite UK television •To investigate the positive and negative portrayal of alcohol •To explore the percentage of interactions that involve alcohol •To explore the percentage of each episode that involves alcohol •To assess how many characters drink over daily guidelines •To explore the relationship between alcohol and the characters who regularly/excessively consume alcohol •To look further into the link between the location of alcohol consumption and the consequences depicted •To identify and analyse the repercussions, if any, of excessive alcohol consumption shown •To explore the frequency of tea use on British soaps aired on non-satellite UK television •Six weeks of footage was collected for each programme from 26th July to 6th September 2010 and analysed for verbal and visual instances of alcohol and tea. •In total 21.5 hours was collected and analysed for Emmerdale, 15.5 hours for Coronation Street, 15.5 hours for Hollyoaks and 13 hours for Eastenders. © 2010 Kantar Media 3 INTRODUCTION cont. •A coding sheet was formulated in conjunction with Drinkaware before the footage was analysed which enabled us to track different types of beverages and their size (e.g.
