G More than a dozen previously unissued recordings written by classic country songwriters such as Dallas Frazier, Kris Kristofferson, Mel Tillis and Don Gibson! G Includes all the recordings from the years that fans and Connie herself call her strongest. Upbeat hard country, searing heartbreak ballads, sacred songs, and even some Smith takes on pop of the day. G Her duet albums with Dallas Frazier and Nat Stuckey are included. INFORMATION Connie Smith belongs in the top tier of all country singers. Or, as Dolly Parton once said, "There’s only three real female singers: Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, and Connie Smith. The rest of us are only pretending.” What earned her the respect of her peers and sales that number in the millions? Clarity. Emotion. Sheer power. And some of the era's greatest songs. This 5-CD set includes all of Connie's recordings from February 1968 through November 1972. It follows BEAR FAMILY's 'Born To Sing' set that comprised all of Connie's RCA recordings from 1964 until '67. Included here are enduring hits like Run Away Little Tears, Just One Time, Where Is My Castle? and If It Ain't Love (Let's Leave It Alone), as well as How Great Thou Art, one of the most requested of all Smith songs. And included in their entirety are prized Connie Smith LPs, including her duet collaborations with Nat Stuckey and Dallas Frazier and her modern sacred song collection 'Come Along And Walk With Me.' The era's most-acclaimed songwriters held their songs for Connie Smith's sessions, and the best of the best of Nashville musici- ans, including leading players from the legendary A-Team, steel guitar giants Weldon Myrick and John Hughey, and visiting Texas fiddling ace Johnny Gimble, back Connie throughout these recordings. And there are 14 unreleased recordings as well, in- cluding songs by Dallas Frazier, Kris Kristofferson, Mel Tillis, Dottie West, and Don Gibson. This set also includes a book incorporating Barry Mazor's full-length exploration of the intersection of Connie's music and life during these years, previously unseen photos from Connie's own collection, and a detailed discography by Richard Weize. • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

  • MARTY STUART TRAVELS from SATURDAY NIGHT to SUNDAY MORNING by Mario Tarradell
MARTY STUART TRAVELS FROM SATURDAY NIGHT TO SUNDAY MORNING By Mario Tarradell Country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, TV show host and historian continues to mine the rich treasures of American roots music Marty Stuart spent nine years journeying from Saturday night into Sunday morning. That’s no hyperbole. The country singer, songwriter, guitarist, TV show host and noted historian took nearly a decade to craft his expansive and ambitious double-album, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning. The just-released effort not only combines Stuart’s predilection for all things American roots music – country, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, gospel and bluegrass – but it also tells a story. “I wanted it to flow as a continuation, as an evolution,” says Stuart, 56, by phone from his home in Nashville. “We toured all the while making this record. The more we developed the idea, the more songs started piling up.” As the title suggests, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning captures the dichotomous reality of raising hell and seeking heaven. It’s about night and day, dark and light; the balancing act of feeding the flesh and nourishing the soul. The Saturday Night disc is all about the honky-tonk, while the Sunday Morning CD is all about the church. Stuart calls it “spiritual warfare,” noting that it’s a fine line we all struggle with in our lives. The gospel harmonies on the Sunday Morning side are particularly impressive, recalling the best of the Oak Ridge Boys and the Staple Singers. Stuart and his longtime band, the Fabulous Superlatives, found common ground as people in that musical world of Southern gospel.

“Once a Day”--Connie Smith (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Barry Mazor (guest post)* Bill Anderson, Connie Smith and Bob Ferguson in the studio Just months before Connie Smith would step up to the microphone at RCA Records’ Music Row Studio B for her very first recording session, she was a virtually unknown Ohio housewife who’d performed at nearby fairs and on local television. Then, fatefully, at an August 1963 talent contest near Columbus, the contest judge proved to be recording star and country songwriting master Bill Anderson. He would note in his memoir, “None of us could believe such a big voice was coming out of such a petite lady.” He’d told her that if she ever came to Nashville to pursue a country career, he’d be there for her. It took her months to decide to give that a try. RCA’s Nashville label head, Chet Atkins, was impressed by her demo tapes, and when Anderson assured him that he’d have new songs for her that could help get her established, she was signed to the label and in the studio within three weeks. Constance June Meador Smith was 23 as her recording career began that day--July 16, 1964--a young wife and mother. The third song she recorded at that first session, Bill Anderson’s “Once a Day,” in which the singer tells us how the loss of a love to another can be devastating, and as a matter of fact, there’s no denying it has been, would become a country music phenomenon.
