    Understanding Loyalty, Trust, and Deception Through an Analysis of Jack Ryan in Tom Clancy’s The Hunt for Red October and Its 1990 Film Adaptation Rachel Collins FYSE Espionage in Film and Fiction 13 December 2014 !1 In his debut 1984 novel The Hunt for Red October, Tom Clancy introduces the character of Jack Ryan as a CIA analyst and protagonist that classically upholds the fictional spy agent’s values of trust and loyalty, as defined by Alan Wolfe in his article “On Loyalty.” Ryan, not an agent, but rather an analyst for the CIA, is thrown into the world of spies and proves his capability through his balanced loyalties, intelligent trust, and straightforward actions. This thrilling character was easily transformed into an unforgettable hero both through Clancy’s novel and its 1990 film adaptation. In both the novel and film, through constant internal and external conflicts concerning trust and loyalty, Jack Ryan expresses the needlessness of deception and what it means to be a spy in a fictional story. To further examine Jack Ryan as a fictional spy character, the definition of loyalty must first be explored so it can be applied to him as a CIA agent. For this, Alan Wolfe, political scientist and sociologist on the faculty of Boston College, in his article “On Loyalty” successfully outlines a thorough definition of the concept of loyalty that will be used throughout this paper. Wolfe argues, “Loyalty is an important virtue because honoring it establishes that there is something in the world more important than our immediate instincts and desires” (48).

Hunt was born in Tacoma, Washington during his father’s military service in the United States Army. He graduated from Willard High School, Willard, Missouri with the Class of 1986. Clint attempted to enlist on his seventeenth birthday, but his father would not sign the enlistment papers. In February, prior to graduation his father relented and signed papers for Clint to enlist in the United States Navy. He left for Boot Camp, in Orlando, Florida six months after graduating from high school. He was assigned to Navigation Department USS-Shark (SSN-591). Clint qualified as Quartermaster of the Watch, Petty Ofcer of the Deck, Below Decks Watch, and other watch stations. He was promoted to Inport Duty Section Leader. While in Orlando, he went to the Quartermaster “A” School, graduating top of class, then attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School in Groton, CT, and Navy Firefighting School, Treasure Island, CA. While serving in the Navy he became a “Shellback” in 1988 achieved by crossing the Equator and in 1989 became a member of the Order of the Ditch when he transited the Panama Canal. While serving on the Shark sound efects and a hazardous drill were completed to be used in the movie “The Hunt for Red October.” During this time Clint escorted a guy around with a big fuzzy microphone. He relates you can hear him and another guy talking if you know what to listen for but you could hear his Lieutenant clear as a bell!     Thirty years ago, Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013. Mike Maden grew up working in the canneries, feed mills, and slaughterhouses of California’s San Joaquin Valley. A lifelong fascination with history and warfare ultimately led to a Ph.D. in political science, focused on conflict and technology in international relations. Like millions of others, he first became a Tom Clancy fan after reading The Hunt for Red October; he began his published fiction career in the same techno-thriller genre with Drone and continued with the sequels, Blue Warrior, Drone Command, and Drone Threat.     TOM CLANCY, 1947-2013 Tom Clancy, whose name is synonymous with the modern technical military and spy thriller genre, passed away on October 1, 2013 near his home in Maryland, after a short illness. He was 66. Clancy was born April 12, 1947, in Baltimore, MD, into a middle-class family. Even as a child, he was fascinated with naval and military history, passing up typical juvenile reading material for the types of detailed journals and technical books that were aimed at career military officers or experts in engineering fields. His pre-teen and teen years were filled with reading fictional and non-fictional accounts of submarine warfare, cold war espionage and politics, and high-tech military equipment. Clancy’s own hopes of serving in the military were stymied when it turned out he was too nearsighted to qualify for military service. Instead, after graduating from Loyola College in Balitmore with an English degree in 1969, he took a job working in the rural insurance agency founded by his wife’s grandfather. His passion for the military, military history, and the backdrop of modern day espionage convinced him to write, which he did in his spare time. In 1984, his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, achieved instantaneous success. It was received well by critics, but received its most positive buzz when President Ronald Reagan was seen to be reading it and commented on how much he enjoyed the novel. Clancy’s next several thrillers, Red Storm Rising, Patriot Games, The Cardinal of the Kremlin and Clear and Present Danger all became blockbuster bestsellers, and inspired a large number of imitators, establishing Clancy at the top of the technothriller genre.

Five layers of wool and oilskin enclosed him. A dirty harbor tug pushed his submarine's bow around to the north, facing down the channel. The dock that had held his Red October for two interminable months was now a water-filled concrete box, one of the many specially built to shelter strategic missile submarines from the harsh elements. On its edge a collection of sailors and dockyard workers watched his ship sail in stolid Russian fashion, without a wave or a cheer. "Engines ahead slow, Kamarov," he ordered. The tug slid out of the way, and Ramius glanced aft to see the water stirring from the force of the twin bronze propellers. The tug's commander waved. Ramius returned the gesture. The tug had done a simple job, but done it quickly and well. The Red October, a Typhoon-class sub, moved under her own power towards the main ship channel of the Kola Fjord. "There's Purga, Captain."     The Cold War in the Classroom Week 3 Cold War Fellowship Report Jessica Reinisch, 16th February 2017 Flash points and near misses: why didn’t the Cold War ever turn into a ‘hot’ one? This week our teachers read up on a still relatively little-known Cold War incident, a routine NATO military exercise named ‘Able Archer 83’ that took place in Western Europe in November 1983. The simulation was so realistic that it convinced some Soviet officials that the West was preparing for a nuclear strike. We asked our group to read excerpts from the recently declassified Able Archer report, along with a Guardian article about the declassification and a chapter by Paul Level on Cold War arms control. If they wanted to read more, there was also an article by Arnav Manchanda and the HA podcasts on other Cold War crises. The group discussed the significance of ‘near-misses’ such as Able Archer 83 in the history of the Cold War, and wrote some very thoughtful and imaginative pieces on how they could be taught in the classroom. Key points emerging in the discussion about the history were… Thinking about the role of Able Archer in histories of the Cold War got many of our teachers fired up. “Was Operation Able Archer responsible for bringing the world closer to nuclear war than the Cuban Missile Crisis? New information has given us greater understanding of a crisis which started as a game but nearly ended in disaster; Operation Able Archer. Not only did this crisis nearly cause a nuclear war, but it also contributed to the end of the Cold War.” “It demonstrated how superficial the so-called achievements of détente had been.” “Able Archer shows the non-proliferation treaties and agreements during the Cold War actually, in practice, held little real underlying meaning.” To many of our group, the Able Archer incident highlighted much wider implications and ramifications of the Cold War: “The episode struck me as a way into studying the uniqueness of the Cold War in a global setting.
