Round 1 - 2 April 2016 34 Round 1 - 2 April 2016 3 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au LLOYD DRAFTED BY GWS GIANTS

Killarney Vale's Daniel Lloyd thought his AFL dream had passed him by, however that all changed in the off-season when he was drafted by the GWS Giants.

For Lloyd it was an opportunity that he thought had passed him by: “As a 23-year old you don’t really think another op- portunity will come up so I’m so glad this has come to me and I’m very happy.

“This is a life-changing moment and it's is a great opportunity for my family and I."

The Killarney Vale junior had a distinguished junior career which included regular appearances in NSW junior sides that saw him obtain and AFL Scholarship with the as a 16 year old and when the club opted to pass on the opportunity to draft him Lloyd believed his AFL dream was over.

Lloyd returned to the Black Diamond AFL to play for his beloved Bombers and continued to be consid- ered one of the best players in the league, yet despite this status has never played a representative game for the BDAFL, although he did play as a top up player for the Sydney Swans Reserves in a NEAFL match in Newcastle in 2013.

After his 2014 season was cruelled by a broken ankle, Lloyd had a brilliant 2015 season which saw him win the clubs Best & Fairest Award and raise the attention of team mate and former Essendon AFL captain, and now GWS Assistant Coach, Mark McVeigh.

The club sent representatives to watch Lloyd play in last year Killarney Vale's semi final clash with Warners Bay, and they would have left that match in raptures as Lloyd dominated the match kicking nine goals.

Having been invited to train with the Giants over pre-season, the 186cm, 89 kgs powerful mid-sized forward has made the most of the opportunity and the club drafted him t with the 26th pick in the Rookie Draft.

Lloyd has impressed the Giants throughout pre-season training as well as in the clubs NEAFL practice matches.

Lloyd will need to be promoted to the GWS Giants’ primary list before he can fulfil his dream of playing an AFL game.

Round 1 - 2 April 2016 4 Round 1 - 2 April 2016 33 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au BDAFL TO SUPPORT RUN AGAINST VIOLENCE PROGRAM

At the Season Launch the Black Diamond AFL announced that it will be supporting White Ribbon's "Run against Violence" RAV program in 2016. The BDAFL also announced that Pullman's Magenta Shores Resort will partner with the BDAFL in supporting this program. The RAV program uses running and other sporting activities as a con- duit for educating and engaging communities in family violence preven- tion. They believe that by breaking the silence and encouraging people to learn about family violence they can remove the stigma and social barriers that prevent people asking for help. The RAV program was the idea of Ultra marathon runner, Kirrily Dear (pictured), who resides on the Central Coast, who decided that in 2014 she would run the equivalent of 20 marathons (860 kilome- tres) through regional NSW (Walgett to Forbes via Tamworth & Dubbo) during the hottest November in 57 years. Her sole purpose was to break the silence surrounding domestic violence in our commu- nity and get people talking about the steps they can take to make the violence stop. Ms Dear who is the face of the campaign attended the BDAFL Season Launch on Sunday and ad- dressed the audience about the trials and tribulations she experienced during the run and also the emotional experience she has experienced as strangers come up to her and explain their situation. BDAFL President, Wal Bembic said that upon hearing about Kirrily's program immediately got in- volved and said the Board were unanimous in their support of the program. 'Violence in the home is a big issue in this country and if we can help stop even one occurrence, then our involvement will be considered a success" Bembic said. Kirrily, or other representative of RAV will be visiting all BDAFL clubs during the season to not only talk about domestic violence but also the courage and drive it takes to be an ultra marathon runner. RAV has produced a documentary of Kirrily's adventure "Iceberg" in both a five minute trailer as well as a 25 minute presentation and their goal is for every Australian to see the presentation and start a conversation within their local community about steps that can be taken to prevent domestic violence. ABC TV show "Compass' will be showing a special edition of ICE- BERG on Sunday, Apr 3 6:40pm
