February 26, 2021 Amazon Warehouse Workers In
February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. What Will It Take to Save Comedy Central?
What Will it Take to Save Comedy Central? 08.16.2016 Comedy Central's cancellation of The Nightly Show is the latest in a series of signals that all is not well at the network that was once the home of the country's sharpest political satire and news commentary. On Monday, Comedy Central announced that it was cancelling the show, which took Stephen Colbert's Colbert Report time slot in February 2015 when Colbert moved over to CBS' The Late Show. The move was not surprising considering the ratings: The Nightly Show is averaging a barely-there 0.2 among its key demographic of adults 18-49. RELATED: Comedy Central Cancels 'The Nightly Show' But The Nightly Show's failure to catch on is not the only problem at Comedy Central. Consider its late-night partner, The Daily Show, long the network's marquee program with host Jon Stewart. Stewart left the show just over a year ago and was replaced with South African comic Trevor Noah, who was hand-picked by Stewart. But despite Comedy Central's best efforts to reassure the media and audiences that Noah would eventually catch on, so far he hasn't. In May, The Wrap reported that The Daily Show had lost 38% of Stewart's audience among millennials aged 18-34 and 35% in households. And that comes at a time when the country is in the middle of a presidential election that lends itself extremely well to satire. It's also proven to be a mistake to let so much of its talent walk out the door, with Stephen Colbert going to CBS, John Oliver to HBO and Samantha Bee to TBS, taking much of Comedy Central's brand equity with them. -

THE BROWN MOMENT IN TAIWAN: MAKING SENSE OF THE LAW AND POLITICS OF THE TAIWANESE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE CASE IN A COMPARATIVE LIGHT Ming-Sung Kuo & Hui-Wen Chen+ The Taiwan Constitutional Court (TCC) recently issued a landmark decision in Interpretation No. 748 (the Same-Sex Marriage Case), declaring the definition of marriage as a gender-differentiated union of a man and a woman under the Civil Code unconstitutional and setting the stage for Taiwan to become the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. This decision has been compared to Obergefell v. Hodges. However, reading Obergefell in the broad context of the gay rights movement and the role of judicial review in Taiwanese constitutional politics, we challenge this analogy. Due to the discrepancy between the social movement and the law in the fight for constitutional rights for gays and lesbians in Taiwan, the Same-Sex Marriage Case is Taiwan’s Brown v. Board of Education moment in her constitutional law and politics. To make sense of the law and politics of the Same Sex Marriage Case, we evaluate its political context and the text and style in its reasoning. We observe a discrepancy between law and politics in the pursuit of the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians in Taiwan. The rise of same-sex marriage to the top of the antidiscrimination agenda resulted from the continuous effort of gay rights activists, while the TCC watched this movement from the sidelines until the Same-Sex Marriage Case. This case thus mirrors Brown in two respects. First, the role of the TCC has been publicly questioned after its Brown-like contentious decision on the issue of same-sex marriage. -

After all, we're located in an almost always sunny spot. We could surf and go skiing on the same day if we wanted to. We're a school that's safe. In fact, everyone gets along pretty well. We're on the small side, which has some advantages. For one thing, just about everybody knows everyone. Our teachers may get mad sometimes, but we know they really care about us. And Marian is fun. There's always time to fool around a little: talk with friends, play games and just goof off. That's what we sometimes like to do best. That's what will make memories for us when we look back and remember the time of our lives. Margaret Alcock and Philip Disney look on patiently as James Perkins contemplates his next move. Has the Retail Apocalypse Hit the DC Area?
POLICY BRIEF Has the Retail Apocalypse Hit the DC Area? Leah Brooks, Urbashee Paul and Rachel Shank APRIL 2018 POLICY BRIEF APRIL 2018 | LEAH BROOKS, URBASHEE PAUL AND RACHEL SHANK1 In 1977, the White Flint Mall opened to great acclaim as Maryland’s premier mall, complete with glass elevators, glamorous anchor stores, and an exciting eatery. Now, more than four decades later, White Flint Mall is situated in a sea of empty parking lots. Except for anchor tenant Lord and Taylor, with which the mall owner is in protracted litigation, the mall sits empty. About a decade before White Flint launched, Northern Virginia’s Tysons Corner Center opened, also to acclaim. Tyson’s Corner has seen continued success,2 welcoming Apple’s flagship store in 2001,3 and Spanx’s first brick and mortar store in 2012.4 The promised increase in walkability ushered in by the Silver Line expansion has heralded opportunity for new residential and commercial development.5 To what extent is this divergence due to e-commerce? The Rise of E-commerce Indeed, there is substantial evidence that brick-and-mortar retail is suffering. CNN Money10 reports that 2017 marked E-commerce dates to 1994, when the New York Times the highest number of retail store closure announcements in reported that Philadelphia’s Phil Brandenberger used his history. Within the past year, once-prominent malls in computer to purchase a Sting album. In the following year, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have closed almost 200 Amazon sold its first book, and Pierre Omidyar founded stores. And the wave seems unlikely to be over: Toys R Us Ebay.6 has recently declared bankruptcy, while long-time anchor tenants Sears, Kmart, J.C. -
