Arsenals Biography ARSENALS BIOGRAPHY The Arsenals 100% Kick-Ass Ska, aka The Arsenals, is a Toronto band formed in 1994 by Crash Morgan and his brother James Morgan. They named the band after their London hometown football club. Their first album “STOMP” was signed to MOON SKA Records, New York in 1995. After Crash Morgan’s untimely passing while playing drums for Big Sugar in 1996, his family asked Dizzy Minott to keep the band going to honour Crash’s memory. The original members included Crash and James Morgan on Lead Vocals, Seri Gee on Keyboards, Matt Ronson on Bass, Darren Edwards on Drums, Michael St. Clair on Guitar and Dizzy Minott on Trombone. Today, The Arsenals are led by the energetic Dizzy Minott on Trombone with easy-going and charming Dave ”Comfort” Vassell singing lead vocals. The band features a steady rotation of accomplished musicians including, David “Stushie” Jackson (keyboards), Dwight “Duke” Dawes (keyboards), Shane “Shaky J” Forrest (bass or electric guitar), Neil “Nemo” Morris (bass), Tony Barrett (guitar) and the drummers are, Sunray Grennan, Austin Rowe, Neison Hardy and Oniel Fuller. An Arsenals show will often feature a guest performer. Lately, a certain half Jamaican, half Australian vocalist has been entertaining the crowds with his unique style and towering presence. His name is Ra Lion. (They say he’s raised on Jerk Kangaroo) The Music is timeless, the show is entertaining. The Arsenals play the history of Jamaican Music, from authentic Studio One Ska and Rocksteady to classic Reggae. You will be treated to forgotten gems and modern songs played to the ska beat, a term the band calls “Ska-ter-izing” a tune. If you like Skatelites, Prince Buster, Alton Ellis, Jimmy Cliff and Desmond Dekker to name a few, you will be in for a skanking good time. The Arsenals have performed with ska legend Derrick Morgan, Toots and the Maytals, Ernie Smith, Ziggy Marley, Third World, The Toasters, The Slackers, War, Ken Boothe, Sugar Minott, Bounty Killer, Skatelites Lord Tanamo and L.U.S.T. plus many more. The band performs regularly in and around Toronto, tours Canada and the U.S., is booked annually for festivals and frequently play private and corporate events Arsenals’ latest album, Soopa Ska is available on iTunes .

Gathering at Orgone's Killion Studios, in Los Angeles during the Fall of 2006, they created 03 Jungle Struttin' grooves that went beyond the Reggae spectrum by combining new and traditional rhythms, and dub mixing mastery with the global sounds of Ethiopia, Colombia and 04 Sweet Soul Music Africa. The Lions also added a healthy dose of American-style soul, jazz, and funk to create an album that’s both a nod to the funky exploits of reggae acts like Byron 05 Hot No Ho Lee and the Dragonaires and Boris Gardner, and a mash of contemporary sound stylings. 06 Cumbia Del Leon The Lions are an example of the ever-growing musical family found in Los Angeles. There is a heavyweight positive-vibe to be found in the expansive, sometimes 07 Lankershim Dub artificial, Hollywood-flavored land of Los Angeles. Many of the members of the Lions met through the LA staple rare groove outfit Breakestra and have played in 08 Tuesday Roots many projects together over the past decade. 09 Fluglin' at Dave's Reggae is a tough genre for a new ensemble act, like the Lions, to dive head-first into and pull off with unquestionable authenticity.

  • CHASE Annual Report 2006 V5.Indd
1 MESSAGE FROM THE HON. MINISTER OF FINANCE & PLANNING Dr. Omar Davies It is with pleasure that I send this message to be part of the annual report for the CHASE Fund for the year 2005/2006. In its short period of existence the Fund has made a significant contribution in the vari- ous sectors for which it has provided support. CHASE is indeed a unique institution in that it is guided by a Board of highly competent individuals, specialists in their own fields, but united around the objective of fostering development in the sectors of society which are needed in the continued process of “civilizing” our beloved country. Futhermore, the activities supported by CHASE also benefit greatly from voluntary contributions especially in terms of professional expertise. The operations of the CHASE Fund provide a concrete example of the possibilities of our country when we unite around attaining common objectives. As Minister with responsibility for the Fund, I place on record appreciation for the work of the Board, the management and the staff, not only over the past year but during the life of the institution. Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. If you would like to add to, or alter, an entry please send an email to [email protected] 3 4 4 HERO An influential group made up of Dego and Mark Mac, who act as the creative force; Gus Lawrence and Ian Bardouille take care of business.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.
