THE LITERARY PULI Stephanie Horan

There are few books devoted to the Puli, and those of us who have been involved with the breed for a while have managed to collect most of them. However, people new to the breed and searching for written information may not be aware of some of these titles.

Many are out-of-print, so here are a few hints for tracking down some of these titles:- - Check booksellers at large conformation shows. - Check online auction sites such as eBay. - Search the Internet, start with www.google.com. Type in the title with quotes around it. - Check www.amazon.com, www.amazon.ca, and www.amazon.co.uk. They list both new and used books. - Check online booksellers such as Abebooks.com. It has links to many thousands of booksellers around the world.

There are books about the Puli, and books covering several Hungarian breeds that have a section devoted to the Puli. There are also several works of fiction that feature a Puli, sometimes in a prominent role, occasionally as a minor character. This list has a short description of both non-fiction and fiction books that I have managed to track down so far (and yes - I do own all of these!).

BOOKS ABOUT THE PULI

HOW TO RAISE AND TRAIN A PULI, by Ellanor H. Anderson, TFH Publications, 1964. Intended mainly as a guide for pet owners, Ellanor Anderson was a contemporary of Sylvia Owen and the photographs are interesting for their historical value.

THIS IS THE PULI, by Leslie J. Benis, TFH Publications, 1976. One of the breed's most respected breeders, Les Benis was reportedly working on an updated version of this book when he died in 2007. He emigrated from to the USA following the 1956 Revolution and imported many excellent Hungarian . The book has many BxW photographs of dogs from the early days.

THE COMPLETE PULI, by Sylvia C. Owen, Howell Book House, 1976. Sylvia Owen was one the first successful breeders of Pulis in the USA and her book has many BxW photographs and pedigrees of early American dogs, especially of her own Skysyl dogs, all of whom were kept in the brushed coat. Useful for historical interest.

PULI, by Martin Weil, TFH Publications, 1982. Many photographs of brushed and corded American dogs. The text includes all the usual sections on the origin of the breed, conformation, breeding, etc, though with some odd ideas occasionally thrown into the mix.

HUNGARIAN BREEDS, by Pal Sarkany & Imre Ocsag, Egyetemi Printing House (Hungary), 1986. Originally published in Hungarian in 1977 by Corvina, this English translation is well worth having. It covers not only the Puli but also the Pumi, , , , , Magyar Agar and the Transylvanian . Good photos and does a nice job describing all the breeds.

THE HISTORY OF THE PULI, by Arany Csaba (Hungary), 1997. This book is split into English, German and Hungarian sections which all offer the same information. Pedigrees, family trees, history and photographs, with much archival material on early dogs and breeders in Hungary.

DOGS OF HUNGARY, by Tibor Buzady, Nora Kiado Publisher, year not mentioned but after 2000. Covers all the Hungarian dog breeds, has a chapter on the white Puli which the author seems to consider a separate breed. Stories and poems throughout. Much space devoted to the Kuvasz which is the author's breed of choice. Many BxW photographs.

HUNGARIAN PULI, Ann Arch, Interpet Publishing (U.K.), 2001. History, characteristics, grooming, health and showing are covered in this book, written by a Puli and Komondor breeder. Many coloured photographs on almost every page.

PULI, Ann Arch, Kennel Club Books, 2006. See above book - this is the North American edition with slightly different text, and also includes sections on the Puli in Canada and the U.S.A.

______From AKC POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE

Dear Dog Lover,

Many of you ask: Why should I support the American Kennel Club (AKC) Political Action Committee (PAC)?

Do you:

1. Love dogs? 2. Love purpose-bred dogs who were bred to do a particular job or be a companion? 3. Support a breeder for breeding these dogs? 4. Want to be able to breed these dogs? 5. Want to be able to work with your dogs in various sports? 6. Love to have that warm loving face greet you each day?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then please support the AKC PAC with your donations and your willingness to reach out to elected officials who determine the laws that govern the future of the dogs we love.

The AKC PAC works to elect/re-elect lawmakers who support our positions on laws and ordinances that govern dog ownership. These laws affect our ability to purposefully own, choose, breed, and enjoy the dogs that greet us every morning, and those that we hope to have in the future.

Supporting the AKC PAC shows you care about changing the political landscape to respect purpose-bred dogs and their breeders.

Please consider making a donation today by clicking on this link and help us in the future by signing up for a recurring monthly donation. Donations can be deducted automatically from your debit or credit card. A donation of $30.00 a month, the average cost of a single dog show entry, builds access to lawmakers who can help protect you and your dogs.

For the love of dogs, please support the AKC PAC. Thank you. Gail LaBerge Chairman, AKC PAC The AKC PAC combines contributions from AKC club members and uses those funds to financially support the campaigns of candidates in key races who are willing to defend the rights of responsible dog owners. Because the American Kennel Club pays all the PAC's administrative costs, 100% of your contribution to the AKC PAC goes directly to electing dog-friendly candidates. Learn more at www.akc.org/pac.
