POSITION TITLE: Lighting Supervisor DEPARTMENT: Production REPORTS TO: Director of Production CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Full-time, Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: The Lighting Supervisor is an integral part of the production team at New York Live Arts. Supervised by the Director of Production, the team includes the and three full time apprentices. The Lighting Supervisor is responsible for working with all lighting to realize their artistic visions within the physical and financial parameters of New York Live Arts organizational goals. The Lighting Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the lighting inventory, preparing and implementing all lighting requirements for productions and events at New York Live Arts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

§ Maintain all lighting equipment in the theater, backstage and lobby areas. Supervision, operation, inventory, repair and maintenance of theater’s lighting inventory, power distribution systems, computerized dimmer systems, all lighting fixtures, cables, effects, power distribution, networking and lighting control consoles. § Work with designers to advance their show, helping them to best utilize the house repertory plot, offering suggestions and guiding them through their time at Live Arts. § Manage temporary theatrical installations in the studio spaces. § Serve as master for all productions. Preparation, hanging, connection and focusing of fixtures, supervising all other Electricians, and working with the production team to execute all organizational activity. § Collaborate with Director of Production on repertory light plot design and up keep. § Maintain drawings and paperwork for repertory light plot. § Create archival records of all productions including but not limited to light plot, paperwork, system configuration and console show file. § Advance all NYLA show activity, making good use of “down time” during the tech process to be working on plans for upcoming shows. § Train and supervise production apprentices in all aspects of production including but not limited to lighting skills. Participate in mentoring apprentices to become well-rounded technicians. § Maintain a strong working knowledge of all current lighting technologies.

§ Work closely with the rest of the production department (Director of Production and Technical Director) to maintain the high standards that New York Live Arts is known for throughout the community. § Collaborate with the Technical Director to ensure the safety of all lighting installations in the theater, studio and lobby. § Maintain good working relationships with lighting vendors. § Supervise load-ins, load-outs, and show calls as scheduled. Schedule differs from week to week and may include nights and/or weekends. § Organization and purchasing of all consumables including lamps, color gel, gobos, and other expendables. § Assist with sound, video, soft goods and general operations as needed. § Advise on theatrical equipment systems maintenance, upgrades and capital improvements. § Cultivate and oversee a large pool of freelance technicians. § Design and manage the lighting design for in-house productions such as Fresh Tracks and others as appropriate. § Enforce safe work practices ensuring a safe working environment for all.

QUALIFICATIONS:

§ Broad working knowledge of all aspects of theatrical lighting design and production. § Basic understanding of the fundamentals of electricity. § Ability to trouble shoot and maintain lighting systems. § Hands-on knowledge of lighting systems and electrics. § Proven supervisory skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team player, collaboration skills, problem solving skills and a good sense of humor. § Self-motivated, organized and detail oriented. § Excellent time management skills. § Ability to make thoughtful and timely decisions responding shifting priorities and challenges as they arise. § Proficient in Vectorworks, Lightwright and Microsoft Office. § Proficient in ETC equipment: ETC EOS programming, Unison, networking, dimming, etc. § Basic moving light maintenance and programming. § Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast paced environment. § Ability to lift 50 pounds. § Touring experience a plus. § BA/BS/BFA in technical theater, design, or commensurate experience.
