Lehigh Athletics Department Awards

PHILIP J. SCLAR AWARD — Named in honor of the late Philip J. Sclar, the award is given to a student worker or manager that in the eyes of the Athletics Department exemplifies the spirit and character of Philip J. Sclar. The award bears a monetary gift that shall be used for academic purposes in the following year.

2001-02 Finalists:

Martin Jenkins (Sports Medicine-Equipment) – Martin Jenkins is a freshman student assistant that works in the sports medicine and equipment operations. In serving both groups, Jenkins far surpassed expectations of his superiors and has continued his efforts on a volunteer basis long after his work study money ceased for the simple reason of wanting to be associated with Lehigh Athletics. Jenkins is always doing something. He fills water bottles, finds creative ways to distribute fluid to 100 athletes at one time, assists with equipment problems, prepares and breaks down the football practice fields, and helps wrap injured players with ice.

Justin Metz (Baseball-Sports Information) – A sophomore work study student and volunteer, Justin Metz has gone well beyond the call of duty for the sports information department and the baseball program. Even after his work study money ceased, Metz continued to volunteer his time because of his pure love of the sport of baseball. Metz travels to every game with the team keeping the electronic scorebook and helping in the reporting of game results. During home contests Metz can be found in the booth next to the dugout performing such duties as public address announcing, electronic scorebook keeping, and serving as disc jockey for between inning entertainment. He is welcomed by the team and can often be seen playing catch with the players prior to the game.

Previous Winners: This is the first year this award is being given.
