  • Independence and Freedom
The Last Lap: Independence and Freedom r"$' IThe title of this chapter really says it all: what mattered most in attaining independence was that this ushered in experimental years of internal freedom. Many ex-colonies - too many - obtained independence and became unfit to live in, producing refugees by the thousand. That certainly did not happen in Borg Olivier's Malta.1 By 1969 emigration reached rock bottom, return migration grew, settlers came to Malta from overseas. The economy boomed, creating problems of a different kind in its wake. But these were not so much problems of freedom as of economic well-being and learning to live together and to pull through: there was no repression whatsoever.1 On the contrary the MLP criticism (and a popular joke) was this: tgliajjatx gliax tqajjem il-gvem! Government became rather inconspicuous, unobtrusive, intruding only perhaps by a certain apathy, as well as increasingly a lagging commitment on the part of Borg Olivier's ageing team, especially after 1969. Borg Olivier himself, having attained independence, was no longer at his prime, and his unfortunate private and family foibles did nothing to enhance his delivery. In spite of all that, the election result in 1971 was a very close shave indeed. The Nationalist Party, in government since 1962, did not even have a daily newspaper until 1970, on the eve of the election! By contrast the GWU daily L-Orizzont, started in 1962, and other pro-MLP organs lambasted the Borg 230 Malta's Quest for Independence Olivier administration constantly, and frequently enough, mercilessly. 1970 also saw the use of the GWU strike as a full-scale political weapon when dockyard workers were ordered to strike for months, disrupting the island's major industry mainly on the issue of flexibility.

His ability in fusing into one unique whole the Semitic and the Latin components of Maltese identity transcended politics and managed to establish in a relatively short span of time a sound vision of the island as worthy of achieving independence, and eventually of being recognised by all nations as a republic. This account seeks to identify the influence on political parties exerted by Dun Karm through his works and of proposing a vision of Malta which naturally integrated the Semitic and the Latin segments. Keywords maltese, arabic, italian, identity, poetry, politics 1. A Land in Search of Recognition It was Malta’s fascinating and colourful history that made Malta a much sought after resort for whoever seeks a glimpse of a place where past and present habitually go hand in hand. A small national community, which also includes a diaspora of Maltese living in several countries across the world numbering thousands, is now recognised for its uniqueness achieved largely through sheer dint of hard work by the literary class, Much of it dates back from the late nineteenth century and then going well into the Sixties of the twentieth century when the island achieved its Independence from Britain in 1964.

CAPITOLO SESTO VINO VECCHIO NELLE BOTTIGLIE NUOVE: PARTITI POLITICI E LA GARANZIA DI UN GOVERNO RESPONSABILE Sommario 1. Le elezioni del 1921: nascono i nuovi partiti. 2. Uno sguardo sui meccanismi elettora- li. 3. L’Apogeo di Strickland. 4.

MALTESE HISTORY Unit K Political and Constitutional Developments 1921 to Date Form 4 1 Unit K.1 - The Sette Giugno Riots of 1919 . For the Causes of the revolt see Maltese History Textbook p. 57 (white text book). 1. The Events of 7th – 9th June 1919 In the morning of Saturday 7 June 1919 an angry crowd went to Valletta to show its support for the National Assembly. Some of the demonstrators resorted to the use of violence against the British. At one point the crowd got separated in groups. They attacked the Union Jack, the Union Club, the building of The Daily Chronicle, the residence of Francesco Azzopardi (a pro-British Nationalist member of the Council of Government) and the residence of the noble Cassar Torreggiani (a grain importer). The Police was unable to control the crowd. So the Acting-Governor had to call the Marines who opened fire on the crowd at Bakery Street. Three Maltese youths were killed and others were slightly injured. The victims were Lorenzo Dyer (21 from Birgu) shot near The Daily Chronicle, Manuel Attard (27 from Sliema) and Joseph Bajada (34 from Xaghra, Gozo). On the morning of Sunday 8 June, another furious crowd went to Valletta. A British soldier was beaten and died of wounds some two months later. The building of The Daily Chronicle was assaulted and set on fire. The crowd attacked the Union Club and the house of Colonel Francica, grain importer and President of the Chamber of Commerce. The Marines were called again to disperse the crowd. A fourth victim, Carmelo Abela was injured and died on 16 June.
