  • 6 an Annotated Letter to a Grandfather
6 An annotated letter to a grandfather Jan Douwe van der Ploeg Introduction This chapter is written in the form of an annotated letter containing anecdotes and conversations: a form of presentation used by writers varying in style from Kafka (1983) to Chayanov (1976).' This might seem an unusual way to reflect upon the work ofNorma n Long. There is indeed adifferenc e between a scientific article and a letter. However, since the letter contains many elements that are dear to me - and, whic h are at the same time difficult to integrate into scientific discourse -1 have decided to use its form as awa y ofpresentin g this paper. The letter discussed here is in several respects a confusing document, as I will explain later. I have nonetheless chosen for this slippery road simply because Norman Long, to a considerable degree, has formed me intellectually. I do not mean to imply with this honest statement that creating confusion is a thing I have learnt from him. Far from that. The point is that the letter seems to be, if I am not mistaken, a nice vehicle with which to highlight some of the less visible cornerstones and complexities of the approach developed by Norman. Thus, the presentation of the letter and the accompanying discussions might also be understood as an indirect expression ofm y admiration for him2. The first issue hidden in the letter regards the relevance of context and hence the importance of local cultural repertoire. As the combination of letter and explanation that follows will make clear, any exposition is meaningless when isolated from its context.

  • Personalization of Political Newspaper Coverage: a Longitudinal Study in the Dutch Context Since 1950
Personalization of political newspaper coverage: a longitudinal study in the Dutch context since 1950 Ellis Aizenberg, Wouter van Atteveldt, Chantal van Son, Franz-Xaver Geiger VU University, Amsterdam This study analyses whether personalization in Dutch political newspaper coverage has increased since 1950. In spite of the assumption that personalization increased over time in The Netherlands, earlier studies on this phenomenon in the Dutch context led to a scattered image. Through automatic and manual content analyses and regression analyses this study shows that personalization did increase in The Netherlands during the last century, the changes toward that increase however, occurred earlier on than expected at first. This study also shows that the focus of reporting on politics is increasingly put on the politician as an individual, the coverage in which these politicians are mentioned however became more substantive and politically relevant. Keywords: Personalization, content analysis, political news coverage, individualization, privatization Introduction When personalization occurs a focus is put on politicians and party leaders as individuals. The context of the news coverage in which they are mentioned becomes more private as their love lives, upbringing, hobbies and characteristics of personal nature seem increasingly thoroughly discussed. An article published in 1984 in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf forms a good example here, where a horse race betting event, which is attended by several ministers accompanied by their wives and girlfriends is carefully discussed1. Nowadays personalization is a much-discussed phenomenon in the field of political communication. It can simply be seen as: ‘a process in which the political weight of the individual actor in the political process increases 1 Ererondje (17 juli 1984).

  • [0587] an ASPECT of WORD ORDER in FRISIAN in the Course Of
US WURK XXXI (1982), p. 13 [0587] AN ASPECT OF WORD ORDER IN FRISIAN In the course of the twentieth century linguistic study has begun to tackle an aspect of language change that had been neglected if not completely ignored until then: changes in the order of words. Previously the focus of language study concerned with change had been on the word. The reason for this is evident: words are separate elements and changes in these elements are easy to identify (word form) or, if less easy to pin down, still recognizable and comparable (meaning). In the case of the simplest type of word-group, l a one-to-one comparison is, in principle, feasible. Such a comparison becomes more difficult when the upper limit of a word-group, the clause, offers itself as the unit of comparison. A speaker (or writer, for that matter) can choose the word he thinks most suitable in a given context, but clauses as a unit of communication are attended by regulating elements that are not always within the range of the speaker’s power of manipulation. He does not have much choice about the order of the words constituting the clause. On the other hand, conscious effort on the part of linguists to discover structure, a system, in these building-blocks of human communication has revealed that language, from ancient times onward, had a far more determined word order than many scholars realized. The conclusions of certain recent monographs in the field of Old English show that even when inflectional endings were intact, Old English was by no means an exclusively synthetic language nor mainly so.

Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu, 2016 DOI 10.7169/snp.2016.16.02 LANGUAGE POLICY IN THE NETHERLANDS CAMIEL HAMANS Introduction Language is and always has been such a minor issue in the Netherlands that there is no mentioning of any national language in the Dutch Constitution. There never has been any serious discussion about the nature of the national language. It was self-evident that Dutch should be the national language. This may explain why language policy is not a very popular topic in the Netherlands. In Belgium where there are three national languages, French, Dutch and German, and where there have been and still are violent language disputes between French speaking and Dutch speaking communities and politicians language policy is one of the most frequently debated political topics. This paper deals with the Netherlandish language policy. We only present a short overview of the Belgian language laws here, since in a way they can be con- sidered a consequence of the Netherlandish language policy King William I pursued when he ruled over the extended Netherlands of which what is called Belgium now was a part between 1815 and 1830. The first initiatives: France Real language policy requires an authority who has the power to develop a poli- cy and implement it. So usually language policy is conducted by a central govern- ment; in most cases a national government. In addition, the need for a language poli- cy is only felt when a central government wants to communicate with its citizens directly or when the government wants to show respect for the rights of its citizens.
