CELEBRATING + FAREWELLING OUR CLASS OF 2017

Last week, we came together as a College Community to celebrate and farewell our Class of 2017, and wish them all the best as they enter their final weeks of Year 12 studies. Our Year 12 Final Mass was a beautiful event held in the DRMC last Thursday evening (see photos), and we also gathered on Friday morning for a whole school Final Assembly. A shared morning tea was then enjoyed in Mary’s Courtyard, and our Year 12s can now focus on their final assessments and approaching examinations. We wish our Class of 2017 all God’s blessings as they enter this exciting new chapter in their life journey!

Students, parents and English teachers gathered at Pulteney Grammar School last Saturday morning for the annual launch of an anthology of student writing “Spring Poetry”. The South Australian English Teachers Association (SAETA) has continued this tradition of publishing poetry written by students and teachers, over several decades. Year 9 student Aidan Thatcher (9 FMWIL) had his poem “The Oval” selected for publication and was presented with his copy of the anthology. Aidan’s Year 9 English Class created poems and Writer’s Statements in Term 2. Five students who crafted outstanding poems were invited to enter their poems. Aidan used a great range of poetic techniques to evoke the atmosphere of an oval at night in his powerful poem. It was great to hear the many students who were awarded prizes, reading their poems to the audience, showing the power of words to convey emotions, messages and pictures.

Night air is cold as ice rugged up spectators shuffle in like cattle through the front doors and onto the hard plastic seats The fast football is a whip stinging the hands of the players It moves fiercely and smoothly around the ground Skipping from one pair of hands to another quicker than an F1 car. The ground is filled with rich history Photos of past legends splashed over the walls like a mosaic of memories Shiny trophies displayed proudly behind polished glass panes The grandstands are giants that loom intimidatingly over the players Leaving shadows that engulf the grassy field like a blanket The goalposts are tall and narrow The gaps between them seem to get smaller the longer you look at them Muscles begin to tense the players slow down along with the ball breathing harder and harder hearts beating faster and faster mistakes begin to occur players running out of energy. The final siren blasts around the stadium victorious players and coaches rejoice everyone shuffles out the stadium silence the past roars of the stadium seem like distant echoes the stadium falls asleep as the lights flicker out…. On Monday of Week 3, the Year 10 Business and Society Class travelled to Haigh’s Chocolates and Robern Menz confectionary company to learn more about the business of chocolate and operating a successful local South Australian business. The visit was part of an assignment where we have to design a new product for either one of the businesses, and then prepare a product launch and marketing presentation. Accompanied by Mr Vause and Ms Curtis, we hopped on a bus and travelled to Haigh’s Chocolate Factory in Parkside. As we arrived early, we had the opportunity to buy some chocolate, where Ms Curtis was in her element! Once all the chocolate purchases were complete, we went on a tour of the Haigh’s Chocolate Factory. Here we saw raspberry truffles being coated in chocolate, marshmallow kokettes going through quality control and finally, chocolate hearts being spun. We also learnt how they make their chocolate, how they create new products and how they market them. We had a brief stop at Burnside Village for lunch, before venturing onto Robern Menz. As well as being able to buy some more chocolate, two members of staff came out to talk to us about their business. We were presented a brief history and overview of the company and were then provided with some detailed information about creating new products, which we would need for our assignment. We were even lucky enough to be the first members of the public to try their new, limited edition strawberry FruChocs! We returned to school with bellies full of chocolate and lots of knowledge that will help us to complete our marketing presentations. Thank you to Mr Vause and Ms Curtis for organising the excursion and thank you to all the staff at Haigh’s and Robern Menz for hosting us.

Madeline Scherer (10 FSPRO), Year 10 Business and Society Class 2017 PERFORMING ARTS CONCERT > A Vibrant Showcase of GC Talent!

The talented Performing Arts students of Gleeson College showcased an amazing end of year concert in the Golden Grove Arts Theatre last Tuesday 24 October. The concert included performances from Concert Band, Stage Band, Choir, Concert Choir, Year 9 Band, Junior Rock Band, Senior Rock Band, newly formed rock band ‘DELT’, as well as many dance items and a solo singing performance by Year 12 vocalist Cherie Surman. The whole show was a wonderful celebration of the immense talent here at Gleeson College. It also allowed us the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the talents of, and say farewell to, our outgoing Year 12 performing artists, Lachlan Agius, Thomas Norbury, Tayla Slack and Cherie Surman. Congratulations to all students involved on a fabulous event! Mrs Carly Meakin, Arts Coordinator

Congratulations to Brayden Caskey (11 HSFEL) on his recent selection to represent in the Under 18 State Baseball Team set to contest the 2017 National Youth Championships in January 2018. The National Youth Championships attract the best young baseballers in Australia and will be held at the Blacktown International Sports Park in New South Wales. Well done Brayden and best wishes to you and the SA boys for a successful championship campaign!

Congratulations to Paris Sinclair (10 FSPRO) on her selection in the 2018 South Australian Under 17 State Netball Squad after Phase 2 trials were held last weekend at Priceline Stadium. To progress to this stage in such a highly competitive field is an amazing achievement and we wish Paris, who plays for Tango in the State League, all the best as she continues to strive for a place in the final team.

Congratulations to Australian cyclist and Gleeson Senior Braden O’Shea (12 FSPRO) on a fantastic comeback victory at the RedDuck 2 Day Cycling Championships recently. Braden won the event with cycling partner and fellow Aussie young gun Jarrad Drizners - a great achievement after fracturing his collarbone in a nasty race fall earlier this year - and now looks forward to the Melbourne 6 Day Cycling event held at Darebin International Sports Centre (DISC) in Victoria from December 5-10. 6 Day cycling is the most exciting form of track racing, with this year’s race attracting an impressive field, including six world champions and many European riders. Wishing you all the best Braden!!
