The MOA stipulated that a thematic study and photographic documentation be produced that told the story of D Area’s genesis, its operational history, and its closure. D Area, also known as the 400 Area, was the site of the Savannah River’s heavy water production facilities constructed as part of the Savannah River Site (SRS) between 1950 and 1955. Heavy water was integral to the Site’s Cold War nuclear production mission as it was used to moderate and cool the five production reactors that operated at Savannah River.

Our past, our homeland, glorious and brave deeds, and genealogies are all passed from one generation to another through our stories. The modern oral history is not entirely dissimilar to the oral traditions of indigenous societies. However, there are some differences. Good oral history isn't just taping someone talking; it takes conscientious research and careful planning at several levels: in deciding the project focus; in selecting persons to be interviewed; in developing appropriate questions to be asked; and in learning to become a good interviewer. Oral history interviews are distinguished from other types of storytelling and taped interviews in that the purpose is to create a historical record for the future. Ideally, the contents are copyrighted and the rights belong to the speaker (interviewer and interviewee). Oral history interviews are designed to create a record where none previously existed, as well as to bring different perspectives to the existing information found in written histories.

    COUNCIL OF ENERGY RESOURCE TRIBES Final Report for DOE Cooperative Agreement DE-FC03-95SF20807 Period of September 1,1995, to August 3 1,1999 I. Projects funded by Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management There were three major projects undertaken at the outset of the DOE/EM 22 Cooperative Agreement back in September 1995. There was a project relating to Tribal oral histories. Another project of the Cooperative Agreement related to technology and Tribal values and needs. This project by analogy could apply to issues of technology, environmental cleanup and other indigenous peoples internationally. (How can Indian Tribes participate in defining the need for technology development rather than merely learning to adapt themselves and their situations and values to technology developed by others with differing needs, values and economic resources?) And the third project was the placement of a Tribal intern in EM-22. The history of the Cooperative Agreement is not documented in this final report. But it should be noted at the outset of this report that the changes in management within CERT and the events leading up to the relocation of the administration from Oakland to Morgantown had a major impact on the course of the project. Although the goals and objectives were accomplished, they were done so not always as planned or anticipated. If the proof of the pudding is in tasting, then not only were the goals of the Cooperative Agreement between DOE and CERT achieved but the objectives of the projects as well. Perhaps of greater importance is the fact that the Cooperative Agreement became a vehicle for an even greater degree of cooperation between CERT, 50 energy Tribes, and the Department and the Administration for Native Americans.

It is set in a pre-9/11 New York City, during a week in the summer of 1980. Geri Lipschultz, in her critical introduction, confronts both the instability and the virtual death of a text (drawing on Robert Scholes and Gayatri Spivak), as well as its revival in the hands of a contemporary reader. Lipschultz positions herself as a new reader in her revision/revival/revitalization of an old text—whose title, contents, and structure have been altered from their original construction thirty years past. She documents her course of revision, which begins with a rupture, itself a consequence of her impulse to investigate the etymology of selected words. Part of her work is an interrogation of the nature of revision itself, which might boil down to the adage offered by Heraclitus: You cannot step into the same river twice.

Coyotes yip and call as the night retreats over the mountains. Daylight brings what soon will be a wall of breathtaking heat. This is an unfriendly, barren place, miles from any city, but 50 years ago its desolation was perfect for a team of international scientists who exploded the world's first atomic device in semi-secrecy at 5:29:45 a.m. Mountain Time, July 16, 1945.Less than a month later, Japanese troops surrendered, ending World War II, after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945. Five decades later, that act is still questioned by concerned citizens around the world. On July 16, 1995, a crowd estimated at between 1,500 and 3,000 gathered at Trinity Site. They braved the heat, which grew intense by 9 a.m., to commemorate the 50the anniversary of the explosion with prayers and philosophical comments on the date. Historic moment The U.S. Army opened the site, part of the White Sands Missile Range, especially for the anniversary. Normally it is open only twice a year, on the first Saturday in April and October. In many cases, those who flew from around the globe, or drove from Ohio, California, Washington, D.C., and parts of Canada decided almost casually to show up. But behind most of their decisions lay a conviction that something tremendous had happened here.
