Dear Mr. Secretary General:

I am honored that you accepted our invitation to deliver the 2016 Herbert H. Lehman Memorial Lecture on March 17. The Lehman Lecture is a cherished tradition on our campus. It provides an opportunity to honor the legacy of our namesake, Herbert H. Lehman, the former New York Governor, United States Senator, and international statesman.

Herbert H. Lehman was widely admired not only for his political leadership but also for his devotion as a passionate advocate for the poor, the downtrodden, a friend of the common man and newly-arrived immigrants. Throughout his long life of public service he sought to expand the rights and opportunities for all Americans, regardless of creed, gender, race, or ethnicity. After serving as Governor of New York from 1933-1943, at President Roosevelt's request, he resigned to become the first director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA). In what has been called the largest international relief effort in history, the UNRRA distributed life-saving humanitarian assistance to millions of refugees in Europe and the Middle East from countries devastated by the Second World War.

The topic of your lecture is open and yours to decide. Certainly a discussion related to any one of the priorities that you set forth to address during your tenure as Secretary General would be of great interest and relevance to our students, faculty, and staff, who hail from every comer of the world.

The lecture, which is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community at large, will take place at 11 :00 AM, and a brief reception follows immediately.

Enclosed for your information is a list of Lehman Lecturers over the past 45 years for your perusal. Please accept my heartfelt appreciation for accepting our invitation. With great anticipation, we look forward to your visit to Lehman College next month.
