Warsop & District

Issue 21 August 2019

Remarks from the Chair Hello and welcome to the August 2019 Newsletter. I hope you are all enjoying the summer weather and managing to stay cool. I must admit I find the hot weather difficult and if I’m honest I prefer Spring and Autumn. I joined the trip to Sandringham Flower Festival which was a wonderful display of plants, flowers and crafts but unfortunately for me was a particularly hot day. However I did manage to find an air conditioned shop which gave a welcome relief from the sun. It was a great day out particularly for those who are sun worshippers.

At the August meeting we will be joined by Consultants for ‘Vibrant Warsop’ who, as mentioned before, are carrying out a review of the activities, events and opportunities for people in Warsop & District. Vibrant Warsop is based at the The Shed (Adam Eastwood Building) and they have many activities they support. They also advertise and promote our Interest Groups to people and signpost them to us. The Consultants would like to talk to our members to gain your views on what you are interested in and what gaps there are in provision.

Ballot on monthly meeting venue: I’m sure you are all eager to hear the results of the ballot held in July to decide if we change venue for our monthly meeting i .e. Stay at the Parish Centre (Tudor Barn) or move to the Oaklands. The ballot was held at the July meeting and for those not attending the meeting by post or email. The result has been posted on the website and is as follows:

Count / Result of ballot Tudor Barn 57 Oaklands 45 Spoiled papers 1 Abstentions 3 Unreturned 2 Total 108

Therefore the decision is to remain at the Tudor Barn for our monthly meetings. The Committee also discussed future planning and we agreed to continue booking just the Tudor Barn i .e. not the Fitzherbert Room. It was felt that the Interest and Event tables are more successful and accessible at the rear of the Barn rather than separate in the Fitzherbert Room. We are also committed to our public relations / communication plan to increase our membership to ensure a vibrant Warsop & District U3A and to grow our Interest Groups. I will also be meeting with Parish Centre staff to try to resolve the difficulties with providing refreshments.

Many thanks with your patience and support during the ballot process. Doors open at 10am for the 12 th August meeting with the meeting starting 10:15am and don’t forget to collect your lanyards and name badges and return them at the end of the meeting. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Refreshment Team / Meeters & Greeters

We have a healthy list of Meeters & Greeters who welcome and direct members, visitors and new members at each of our monthly meetings. This includes David and Paul who also put out the chairs and tables.

However, our Refreshment Team has reduced considerably mainly due to illnesses and this has left a small band of 10 – 11 volunteers trying to maintain the service. Our plea for new volunteers has not resulted in any offers. Please consider if you could help – it’s the only way we will keep the refreshments going!!

On the rota for next two General meetings:

12 th August 2019 Meeters & Greeters: Patricia Ellis and David Tyler and Paul Bingham Refreshments: Kate Guest, Marlene Bradley, Christine Chapman and Anne Poultney

14 th Oct 2019 Meeters & Greeters: Chris Wilson, Yvonne Brown and David Tyler and Paul Bingham Refreshments: Irene Crawford, Anne Poultney and 2 vacancies. Please let me know if you are unable to cover any dates so that I can find a replacement plus if anyone is able to help at the October meeting to cover the vacancy.

New Group Suggestions.

I am very keen to help provide any new and interesting groups for our members. If you would like a new group please let me know at the monthly meeting. In the meantime I have had several ideas, namely Creative Writing, Mai Jong (for beginners) and Church Visiting. The latter is a very successful group for Southwell U3A who visit churches in a certain locality monthly from March to October; visiting 2 or 3 churches in the morning, having a nice lunch together and then another 1 or 2 churches in the afternoon. They have worked out this format which works well for them. If you would be interested in any of these three suggestions or one of your own come and see Tamar and me on the Groups Table at the monthly meeting. Ann.

Sandringham trip . On behalf of the members who attended the Sandringham day trip can I say a very big THANK YOU to Chris Wilson and Brenda Pearce for organising a lovely day to the flower festival. We set off at 7.30 on a very warm sunny morning, we were entertained on the coach with a quiz all about numbers, which made the time pass by. Arriving around 10.30 we all made our way round the show, many buying plants from the vast array of trade stalls. Plenty to see, beautiful set up gardens, marquees full of artisan foodstuffs, and crafts, displays from pipe bands, Red Devil’s display team and much more, Prince Charles and Camilla making an appearance chatting to the public. I think we were all seeking the shade as it was so hot but there wasn’t a lot to be had, glad to get on the coach for the trip home and air conditioning! We were entertained again on the way home with games of bingo and endless sweets. A thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you. Sue Fenyn.

Report 0n the July walk on 4.7.19: On a lovely sunny morning 6 of us met at The Carrs with no definite route planned. Armed with a map of Warsop Parish Paths we decided to follow our noses. We headed off across The Carrs, where preparations for Warsop Carnival were in hand, following the River Meden towards Stonebridge and through open countryside to . Passing under the railway bridge we turned left and walked across the bridleway back towards Warsop, enjoying the fresh air, scenery and companionship. Moira Heslop
