Process of revision updating courses per Advisory Board recommendations to include professionalism and digital use in the course. Both are critical for students looking to be self employed as a .

SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)

1. Demonstrate proficiency in medium format , using a light meter and continuous light sources. 2. Demonstrate skills in planning, interpreting, and presenting a portrait photographically. 3. Produce a group of portrait that exhibits technical skill and a clear conceptual basis.

SPOs (Student Performance Objectives)

1a. Demonstrate skills in the manipulation of lighting for portrait photography.

1b. Demonstrate skills in using medium and/or cameras.

2a. Utilize the critique process to demonstrate an awareness of the critical evaluation of a in terms of the standards of portrait photography.

2b. Write exams, and/or analysis that communicate an understanding of portrait photography as it relates to the history of portrait photography.

3a. Produce portrait photographs in the studio and on location.

A. Brief introduction to the history of portrait photography.

B. Brief introduction to critical writing on Portrait Photography.

C. Coverage of sub-genres of portrait photography and artists working withing those areas: portraits based on a common experience or point of view (WPA Photography, Diane Arbus) and the single subject portrait (Larry Sultan, Annie Leibovitz).

2. Lighting for Portrait.

A. Lighting for studio and location.

B. Lighting direction and ratios.

C. Lighting with direct, indirect and modified strobe light, natural light, unusual sources and with continuous sources.

D. Kelvin Scale.

3. The Creation of a series of portrait photographs.

A. The Diptych. A pair of photographs to represent a portrait.

B. The Triptych. A group of three images to represent a portrait.

C. The Series. A group of 5 or more images to represent a portrait.

Methods of Instruction Lecture on style of presentation of portrait photographs, group discussion on the various styles of portraiture, lab to print and create photographic work, activity researching and sharing information portrait , field trip to artist studio, collaborative research, visiting artists, student presentations, reading and writing assignments on conceptualizing and professionalism.  

Methods of Evaluation of Student Performance Writing: written critique of student and professional work.

Skill Demonstration: class performance, field work, performance (for example students will be tasked to work with clients assigned by the instructor - for this they will generate a budget and proposal for the shoot).

Assignments Project #1: Defining the Body with Belonging: Select a compelling human subject. Consider what objects and spaces define them as an individual. Shoot one roll of film. Decide if you need to prop the scene or if you want to leave the objects as they were found for a more documentary feel. Make conscientious and considered decisions about your light and your metering. You will be graded on your creativity in visually describing the person and your choice of lighting to express your subject.

Project #2: Self Portrait/Real and Imaginary. Create 2 self-portraits - one that you feel is a real

Make conscientious and considered decisions about your light and your metering. You will be graded on your creativity in visually describing yourself and your choice of lighting.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Catalog Description Exploration of the fundamentals of portrait photography in the context of a variety of locations. Emphasis on planning, interpreting, and presenting a portrait photographically. Medium format film cameras, advanced printing techniques as well as in studio lighting set-ups using hot lights, strobes, electronic metering will be covered. Total of 36 hours lecture and 72 hours laboratory. Transfer credit: CSU; UC Grade Mode: L, A, P
