IMMIGRATION TO ISLAM JAWDAT SAID ANSWERS TO: FOURTEEN QUESTIONS POSED BY: IBRAHIM MAHMOUD TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY: DR. ABDULLATIF ALKHAIAT 1 Published in Arabic in 1995 2 Foreword By: Jawdat Said Praise be to Allah. Peace be to His servants whom He has favored, and those who command what is fair. Esteemed Ibrahim Mahmoud, Peace be to you; and the blessings and grace of Allah. Here is my attempt to answer your fourteen questions. Let me assert, at the outset, that to assume or to assert that I am going to answer your questions in full, or nearly in full, would be vain on my part. At the same time, to assume or to assert that it is not possible for my answers to reveal important things, and to help us move some steps ahead, would be contradicting the law of history and existence. With this in mind, I welcome your questions, and proceed to answer them, not worried about imperfection: I work by the advice of a certain poet who said: "To do your humble share is better than not trying at all." And when you speak of a debate between you and me, I wish that, when we debate, it is not with the intention that I bring you to my side, or that you pull me to your side: I hope it is conducted on the understanding that we help each other 3 issue from the catastrophe that afflicts all of us; it is to seek together to find the way out. It is as they say: Catastrophes have the merit of bringing the sufferers together.

The international community has demonstrated indecision regarding concerted strategic action in the face of Bashar al-Assad’s brutal acts against the Syrian population. Meanwhile, the subsequent refugee crisis is heavily impacting Syria’s neighboring countries Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and to a lesser extent Iraq. In the two latter, the political implications of what is turning more and more into a proxy war are felt the strongest and contribute to the increasing instability of both countries.

  • Description of the Conference About Creor
DESCRIPTION OF THE CONFERENCE In the 10 years since the publication of Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age and the beginning of the Bouchard-Taylor Commission on reasonable accommodation, religious diversity has become an increasingly divisive topic in Quebec and much of Canada. There are fears that what began as a peaceful exercise in public democratic governance may degenerate into violence as demonstrated by the mosque shooting in Quebec City in January, 2017. Such fears are not unique to Quebec; indeed, religious diversity is increasingly problematized in political and public discourses around the world, with secularism/laïcité posited as “the solution” to the challenge of fostering social cohesion in multicultural environments. This categorization of secularism as “solution” ultimately places religion in the category of “the problem”. However, there are other ways of thinking about diversity - such as that offered by Charles Taylor - as itself a “solution” to multicultural society’s problems. This conference seeks to rethink how the categories such as “solution” and “problem” are constructed, designated, and utilized by scholars, politicians and religious communities, as well as how they have shifted overtime. This conference reflects on the following questions and themes: How does the problematization of religious diversity affect particular religious communities? How are secular discourses shaped by their context, cultures, histories, and/or language? How have religious communities responded to and adapted to the political management

Volume 5 Number 3 (2011): 320-352 http://www.infactispax.org/journal/ Contextualizing Peace in Islamic Traditions: Challenging Cultural Hegemony Candice Marie Nasir Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies University of San Diego Representations of Islam and Muslims, perpetuated in popular media and elsewhere, continue to paint a picture of a people and religion plagued by violence, oppression, and fanaticism. These dominant images often include various groups and individuals who have resorted to extreme forms of violence in the name of ideological interpretations of Islam, or subservient, shrouded women in dark veils. There is a stark contrast, however, between the dominantly projected hegemonic discourse on Islam, and the realities of the strides being made by individuals in the field of peacebuilding who derive impetus for the transformation and negation of violent conflict from an interpretation of Islamic faith, which locates peace as central to the goal of human history. The purpose of this paper is to offer a contextualizing framework for evaluating this incongruity. The first section seeks to conceptualize peace in an Islamic context by exploring the relationship between Islam and Salam, as well as the significance of the associated elements and sources of truth informing both. Section two will locate this understanding of peace in the foundational dimensions of Islamic faith that provide a hermeneutic for discerning moral imperative, as enacted and reflected in the works of secular and religious-oriented peacebuilders. The third section examines this interpretation of faith in praxis as exemplified in the lives and contributions of four Muslim builders of peace who appeal to a common vision of human dignity, peace, and unity as central to their religio-cultural traditions respectively.

  • The Muslim Brotherhood in Syria: Illusion and Reality Waseem Hafez*
Policy Alternatives November 2015 The Muslim Brotherhood in Syria: Illusion and Reality Waseem Hafez* For 40 years, the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood has found itself largely outside of Syrian politics. Decimated by years of bloody confrontation with the Hafez al-Assad regime, the Brotherhood of was driven into exile, where it faced organisational and geographic dispersion, a weakened leadership, and dwindling financial resources. With the onset of the conflict in Syria, however, the Muslim Brotherhood has found itself with potential new political prospects. The Muslim Brotherhood is the only Syrian political movement in which youth find a concrete identity, unrelated to other identities and their failed political projects. By engaging with their surroundings, these new members will make up a formidable force in elections if the Brotherhood employs them well. In addition, the Brotherhood has strengthened its ability to build coalitions over the past three years, building alliances by exaggerating their own dominance and leading others to believe that this will win allied partners more votes. This has included both alliances with armed Islamist factions as well as the creation of a new political party in mid-2013, the Waad Party, in collaboration with Christian and Muslim secularists. The Brotherhood’s expansion, however, remains a complex issue. Its true size, and its representation in the Syrian National Council and the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces are difficult to ascertain; its engagement with the foundational
