Director's Message

“Tale as old as time...”

The original story of Beauty and the Beast dates back to 1740, written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. It was a dark tale that featured monkeys that spoke through a parrot, evil brothers and sisters, and a very complex back story. The tale was revised in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Belle’s story was short and sweet, with a cast of archetypal characters - the ingenue, the loving yet hapless father, the protective brothers and jealous sisters, and the hideous but noble-hearted hero. Both tales were meant to teach young girls about arranged marriages, for in those times a young girl’s future was decided by her parents. The Disney version came a long way in updating the story, replacing the jealous sisters with the silly girls, and the overprotective brothers with Gaston. Belle is no longer submissive, but an unconventional bookworm with a strong, independent personality. In order to save her father, she willingly sacrifices her independence. And in doing so, she discovers that love can appear unexpectedly, with rewards exceeding her highest expectations.

Fairy tales have always been a tool to teach the lessons of life. The lessons of this tale have thankfully evolved, giving us a strong, independent role model for young girls, and a young man who made a tragic mistake in which he and the people around him paid a heavy price. But when he was willing to sacrifice himself for another person, he discovered a reward far greater than he could have ever imagined.

It has been an honor to work with such a talented creative team, cast, and production staff in bringing this tale to life. So, in the words of Lumiere....sit back, relax, as the dining room proudly presents....your dinner!

Production Staff

Carol Cronce (Music Director): Carol's first encounter with NCCT was as an apostle in Jesus Christ Superstar. She has since played piano for several shows (her favorite being RENT) and joined the NCCT Board. She is the music director for BarnArts' Summer Youth Theater (Lion King, Aug. 4-6!) and Trumbull Hall Troupe (Over the Moon, Nov.3-5). By day she teaches vocal and general music in the Windsor schools, and, when blessed with free time, reconnects with husband Neal and five furry beasts.

Susan Lamontagne (Choreographer): Susan is thrilled to be back choreographing her 5th NCCT show. Upper Valley choreography credits include Cabaret, Cats (Dir & Choreography), The Rocky Horror Show and My Fair Lady. NCCT: Once On This Island (choreographer), On the Town (Dir/Choreo & NH Theater Awards Finalist), 42nd Street (NH Theater Awards Finalist) & A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Thank you to my partner in life and crime Chris, my twin boys Nicholas & Noah and my Mom and Dad that make all of this possible!

Christine Porter (Production Manager): Christine Porter is fairly new to the Upper Valley, having arrived here after performing an 18-month international tour with The NED Show. She is quite happy to be taking a break from being on stage so she can work behind the scenes, supporting this wonderfully talented cast and crew. When not involved in theater, Christine can be found directing the Windsor Public Library, playing agility with her three furkids, or practicing circus arts and yoyos. She is grateful to everyone in the cast, the crew, and the Board for making her first experience with NCCT a rewarding one! Thank you for being amazing people who let your inner beauty shine!

Anastasia Seyer (Stage Manager): For the past few years, Anastasia has been involved in a variety of productions with Mascoma Valley Regional High School. This is her first time with NCCT. She lives with a pack of thirteen retired sled dogs who enjoy lazing around the house and splashing in the pond chasing frogs and minnows. Anastasia also enjoys running with her pack and sometimes with other humans. Team Instinct.

David Wilson (Director): Dave has been involved in numerous NCCT productions, acting in Brigadoon, and playing in the pit orchestra for numerous adult and teen productions. This is his first NCCT production as director. He has been a member of the teaching profession since 1979, fulfilling the role of music and dramatic director throughout his career. He is currently the music/performing arts director at Mascoma High School. His fifteen minutes of fame came when he was cast in a speaking role for the Universal Pictures movie “Jaws-The Revenge”.

Cast Bios

Skyler Alexander (Villager/Shepherd Boy): This is Skyler's first production with NCCT. He has six years of experience doing summer stock theatre, and an additional two years doing community theatre. When he's not performing, Skyler enjoys reading and writing.

Memory Apata (Belle): Memory Apata is a southern-fried New Englander from Little Rock, Arkansas. She is grateful to be making her NCCT debut as Belle. Memory has worked in nearly every job in music, from acting onstage to hosting her own radio show with her local NPR Classical affiliate. She works as a music librarian at Dartmouth, where she is also in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program. She is a master hula hooper and brings her hoop with her almost everywhere she goes. She would like to thank her adorable husband and her derpy dogs for putting up with her during the summer stock season.

Jason Archambeault (Beast): Jason is thrilled to roar back to the stage once again! Jason has been in many grrrrrrr-eat NCCT productions, such as Sweeney Todd, State Fair, and most recently A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, just to name a few. It would not be possible for Jason to take on this beastly task without the love and support from his true beauty, Dawn, and his little beasts Mason, Ethan, and Cayden.

Jackson Bruce Argenti (Chip): Jackson Argenti is 6 years old and just finished Kindergarten at the Montessori Children's School in Hanover. This is Jackson's first show with NCCT and he is thrilled to be playing Chip! Previously, Jackson appeared as Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol at Northern Stage (NS) and as the Pasta Fairy in Strega Nona at MCS. Jackson enjoys singing in the Children's Choir at St. Thomas, playing baseball, piano, and legos; putting on plays in his family room; and rocking out to Hamilton and Mamma Mia. Jackson is thankful to his family and friends for their love and support. Love and thanks also to his Northern Stage family and Julie Ness for their guidance and encouragement. ❤

Brianna Aubrey (Villager/Milkmaid): Brianna Aubrey is a rising Senior at Hartford High School. She has been in several musicals including 3 NCCT Teen shows. Some of her favorite roles include Gertrude McFuzz in Seussical, Erzulie in Once On This Island, Lucy Schmeeler in On The Town and Belle in Beauty and the Beast Jr. She also enjoys playing the flute, swimming competitively, and spending time with friends. He started performing with NCCT back in 1984 in the production of My Fair Lady. Gary enjoys helping families find books to read and enjoy at the Howe Library in Hanover. He can also be found teaching Music Together with young children and their parents at the Upper Valley Music Center in Lebanon.

Jean-Luc Beaubien (Voiceover/Narrarator/Monsieur D'Arque): Jean-Luc, a recent graduate of Dartmouth College, returns for his 7th NCCT production. He is excited to participate in one last show before leaving to be a Software Engineer at IBM.

Jade Blodgett (Champagne/Caryatid): Jade, originally from Shoreham, VT, is very excited to be part of NCCT's Beauty and the Beast. This is Jade's first experience with community theater, but she has been involved in the music community for years. She has been playing bass clarinet with community bands for years and throughout her schooling. After years of playing instrumental music, she felt like it was time to expand her horizons with musical theater which lead her to NCCT. Outside of her musical endeavors, Jade works as a labor and delivery nurse and enjoys traveling, camping, and getting acquainted with the Upper Valley.

Julianne Borger (Silly Girl): This is Julianne's 5th NCCT production, including NCCT Teens. She would like to thank all of the people who have supported her, especially her mother.

Kate Budney (Silly Girl): Kate is so excited to be a part of her second NCCT summer show! She has also participated in four teen shows with NCCT and was on the Teen Board for 2 years. Recent performances include Sally Brown in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Gertrude Lindsey in SMASH, and Margot in Legally Blonde. Next year Kate will attend Dartmouth College. She hopes to study theatre and medicine.

Katherine Bultman (Villager/Aristocratic Lady): This is Katherine's second show with NCCT. She was previously seen in last summer's production of The Secret Garden. This year she has enjoyed spending time with the cast and making new friends! A big thank you to her family for their support and to the wonderful friends she has made here in the Upper Valley.

Michelle Carlson (Fork): Michelle Carlson is excited to be in her second NCCT production after The Secret Garden last summer. She has also performed with Hartland Community Arts, Shaker Bridge Theater, Parish Players, RJ Crowley Productions, and Old Church Theater. She was also in Knave of Hearts and Sanctuary: A Bird Masque at Saint Gaudens National Historic Site and has performed with Rebecca Rice Dance Company. Michelle recently returned to New Hampshire after spending some time in Los Angeles where she got to act in multiple student films, do background work on some of her favorite shows, and be involved in some awesome projects, like Nathan Sage's short film Neighbor. After quite an adventure in California, Michelle is happy to be back home in the Upper Valley, performing with old friends and meeting new ones.

Cayla Cline (Villager/Lady with cane): Cayla is a middle school Paraeducator and Summer Camp counselor. This is her first NCCT production, and she is excited to be a part of it. She made her theater debut as Colin Craven in last year’s production of The Secret Garden. She is a 7th grader at the Lyme Elementary School, and enjoys singing, acting, rock climbing, xc skiing, running track and spending time with friends. As she learns about the importance of taking healthy risks, she would like to thank her parents and wonderful singing teachers at the Upper Valley Music Center, who encourage her love of singing.

A.J. DeFelice (Knife): This is A.J.'s second show with NCCT, his first being the teen production of Once On This Island back in March. He is a rising sophomore at Hartford High School and enjoys spending time with his cats and puppy. Thank you Mom, Dad, and Cass for the rides!

Aiden Dempsey (Spoon): Aiden is in the 8th grade at Indian River School in Canaan, NH, where he has been active in the Drama Club, the History Club, Student Council, Boy Scouts, karate, and the concert band playing the alto saxophone. In 2013, he was one of the Lollipop Guild Munchkins in the Mascoma Players' performance of The Wizard of Oz. This past March, he was cast in Peter Pan as Darling, also for the Mascoma Players. This is Aiden's first performance with NCCT.

Elizabeth Montmagny Duvall (Villager/Egg Woman): Elizabeth is thrilled to be working with NCCT again, and especially with this particular musical. Elizabeth played Mrs. Potts in the 2006 LHS production, and has assisted in costuming for two other productions of the show. This is Elizabeth's 19th production with NCCT! She won a NH Theater Award in 2010 for her Costume Design of The Mikado. She has appeared in Evita with Opera North and A Christmas Carol at Northern Stage. She and her dog Milo are a registered therapy team with Pet Partners, and enjoy sharing love in the Upper Valley. Claire also enjoys soccer, hockey, track, piano, and ukulele.

Dan Falcone (Gaston): Dan is "pumped" to be the strongman in this production, with LeBill at his side. His spirits are "lifted" when he thinks of performing with three of his own silly girls in this show. He has "weighted" a long time to play a comedic role, after last appearing with NCCT as strict, but lovable Capt. Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Dan works as a science teacher at Hanover High School, "muscling" chemistry into the minds of his students. He also is the "dumbbell" director of the North Country Chordsmen, a barbershop chorus. Thanks to Meg and the girls, the cast, crew and leaders. He hopes to have achieved the high “expactorations” that have been placed on his broad shoulders.

Ella Falcone (Plate): Ella is a rising sophomore at Lebanon High School and is happy to be in this NCCT production with half of her family! Past NCCT shows include State Fair, Oliver!, and Once On This Island. Ella has also appeared in productions with Northern Stage, Opera North, Trumbull Hall Troupe, the Newport Opera House Association, and Wet Paint Players. Norah Falcone (Village Child): Norah last appeared with NCCT as Gretl in The Sound of Music. She has also performed onstage with Opera North (Evita), and Northern Stage (A Christmas Carol). Norah will be entering 6th grade at Plainfield School in the fall. Her other interests are soccer, basketball, piano, and showing her sheep and chickens at 4-H fairs.

Margaret Finley (Plate): Margaret will be a junior at Hanover High this fall. This is her 2nd NCCT summer show. Last year she was Mary in The Secret Garden and loved her experience. Her first show was Beauty and the Beast where she played the role of Chip. Besides acting and singing she loves horses and being with family. She is beyond excited to be back and to be working with friends this summer!

Amy Fortier (Fork Leader): This is Amy's 7th NCCT Summer show since discovering NCCT in 2008. She appeared most recently as Dickon in The Secret Garden. Amy is a former President of NCCT and in her 6th year as a Teen Advisor to our Teen Program. In "real life" she is a personal trainer at the River Valley Club, a blogger at DailyUV.com and a painter in her spare time (what's that?). Thank you to Matt for being an enthusiastic audience participant and putting up with her many NCCT related absences.

Jeff Gibbs (Villager/Bookseller): A newcomer to theater, this is Jeff's first production with NCCT. Inspired by his daughter (and fellow cast mate) Samantha's many performances on stage, Jeff has played Joe Stoddard of Our Town for Hartland Community Arts and more recently Jimmy of The Weir also for HCA. Jeff would like to thank his wife Kim for her support and understanding throughout the rehearsal process.

Samantha Gibbs (Fork): Samantha is a freshman at Hanover High School. She does CrossFit, volleyball, softball, sings, and does musical theater. Recently, she was in the New Hampshire All-State Choir. This is her 4th NCCT show. Samantha's first NCCT show was Oliver! when she was 9 years old. Other area performances include Jerry in Don’t Talk to the Actors at Shaker Bridge Theater, Joseph in Pentangle Arts production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Miles in The Drawer Boy and Mark in The Shadow Box both at Parish Players. As well as performing for NCCT, Joe spent 3 years on the board serving last year as its Vice President and directed the NCCT Teens production of 42nd Street. He would like to thank the board, Dave, Carol, and Susan for everything!

Emma Hadden (Knife Leader): Emma Hadden is a 7th Grade English teacher at Richmond Middle School in Hanover. This is her first time onstage in an NCCT production, but far from her first time in show business. She would like to thank her students and her family for their support!

Isabelle Hall (Silly Girl): Isabelle Hall is very excited to perform in her first NCCT summer show! She loves NCCT and has been in the past 3 NCCT teen shows as well as on the Teen Board. Some of her favorite roles include Wendy in Peter Pan, Gladys in The Pajama Game, and Ti Moune in Once On this Island (NCCT Teen's Winter 2017 show). She is a rising senior at Hanover High School, and enjoys travelling and hanging out with her friends in her free time.

Avery Judd (Napkin): Avery is super excited to be performing as a napkin with NCCT, even though it takes an hour of stretching before she's ready to go on! The past few years she has enjoyed being a part of the NCCT teen shows including On the Town, 42nd Street and Seussical. She will be heading to UNH in the fall to study international affairs and political science. Avery would like to thank her amazing Mom, Dad and two brothers for all of their support!

Steve LeBlanc (Lumiere): Steve is extremely excited to appear in this show with so many talented performers and good friends. Previous favorite roles include Jeff Douglas in Brigadoon with NCCT, Simon Zealotes in Jesus Christ Superstar with the Covered Bridge Players, Jim O'Conner in The Glass Menagerie with the Old Church Community Theater, and an ensemble member in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) with the Springfield Community Players. Steve works at Dartmouth College, and lives in Lebanon with his wife Jen, son Nat, daughter Maddie, and 18 1/2 year-old cat Pushkin. He would like to thank his family for their tremendous help and support.

Ben Makalinaw (Knife): This is Ben's first summer show with NCCT. He has performed with the NCCT Teens for five years. He has dedicated his time with Trumbull Hall Troupe for a few years and performed in numerous shows at Mascoma High. Ben's interests include performing, being a drag queen, and excessively watching . "You don't know how strong you are until you have to be." -

Amye Mason (Mrs. Potts): This is Amye's 4th NCCT production. She was previously seen as a nun in The Sound of Music, Mrs. Mullins in Carousel and Ayah in The Secret Garden. She also recently portrayed Belinda (Flavia) in BarnArts/Green Mtn Players production of Noises Off. She has been involved with NCCT's Teen program for the past 4 years. She is thrilled to once again be sharing the stage with her daughter, Julia, and thanks her husband Shawn and sons Patrick and Parker for their unending support.

Some of her most memorable roles have been Kira in Xanadu (Wet Paint Players), Serena in Legally Blonde (Trumbull Hall Troupe), Ivy Smith in On The Town (NCCT), and Wren Robin in 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche (Wet Paint Players). Next year she will be going to University of Tampa to major in Musical Theatre. "Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars" - Unknown

Claes Mattsson (Baker): This is Claes' first NCCT production (that is Claws as in Santa Claws - tough one to say...... ). He came to Vermont to be a ski bum for one year and never looked back. His roles have included the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, Reuben in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Coat, and Lazar Wolfe, the butcher in Fiddler on the Roof: all performed with Pentangle Arts in Woodstock. He is looking forward to performing in the Lebanon Opera House.

James Mello (Villager/Candle Man): James Mello is often a free spirit. He jokes around when he feels happy, but can find himself quiet when he is nervous. He admires his fellow cast mates for their talent. James aspires to be a writer in coming years, even going as far as writing his very own play already. He hopes to get his work out into the world, but for now, very much enjoys working on this musical, and having so much fun during the process.

Elizabeth Napier (Napkin): This is Elizabeth's first NCCT summer show. She has previously been in two NCCT Teen shows, On The Town and Once On This Island. Elizabeth is a sophomore at Hanover High School where she has appeared in The Taming of the Shrew and The Pajama Game. Elizabeth has been involved with various musical groups at HHS including Footnotes and the a capella group Hilights.

She attends Roger Williams University in Rhode Island where she is studying to be a Spanish teacher and is on the ballroom dance team. She'd like to thank her old car, Frank, for all the good memories and the drives to rehearsal. If you'd like to help revive Frank, please contact her.

Rachel Pizzie (Champagne/Caryatid): This is Rachel's first show with NCCT. When she's not rehearsing, Rachel is a graduate student at Dartmouth College, where she studies education and cognitive neuroscience, and teaches barre classes at Mighty Yoga. Previous favorite roles include The Baker's Wife, Into the Woods and Sister Mary Amnesia, Nunsense. All my love to family and friends!

Elsie Prince (Spoon): Elsie is excited to be part of her second production with NCCT. She enjoyed her first theatre role in The Secret Garden last summer. Elsie has been dancing since the age of 3 and enjoys all genres. In addition to dancing, Elsie enjoys singing, bicycling, skiing, playing basketball, and spending time with family and friends.

Beata Randall (Villager/Hat Seller): While Beata is often typecast as the loud brazen alto, she would like the record to show that she does NOT self identify with her role in this show; incredibly catty to Belle – seemingly because she is pretty and likes to read – and wants to kill the Beast on the grounds that she fears that which she does not understand. That said – shows are lots of fun. Beata's aging memory (appropriate for the years lived) no longer allows her to count the shows she’s been in – but her sense is that it is over 80: including on stage, in the pit playing violin, as choral conductor, and as director. She is excited to be with the group and appreciates the patrons who support the show and make it all possible.

Alex Rushton (Villager/Wolf): This is Alex's 4th production with NCCT, having previously been in the teen shows of 42nd Street, On the Town, and Once On This Island. He enjoys gaming and hanging with friends, and really likes his Italian food.

Ana Laura Santana (Plate): Ana Laura Santana has been involved with NCCT Teens for one year, and now is participating in her first NCCT Summer production! She would like to thank her parents for supporting her throughout the years of being involved in theatre.

William M Sawyer (Lefou): Bill has directed, acted, stage managed, and was a pit musician for many NCCT productions since he met his wife and 2012 NHTA award winning choreographer Allyson while performing in Crazy For You in 2003. Highlights include directing RENT, Jesus Christ Superstar, and roles such as Judas (Jesus Christ Superstar), Fagin (Oliver!), the Dentist (Little Shop of Horrors), Pirelli (Sweeney Todd) and Porker in the professional production of North Shore Fish with the Shaker Bridge Theater. In his "free time" Bill and his wife own The Pink Alligator in Hanover, and The Dance Collective in West Lebanon.

Sarah Sentman (Napkin/Wolf/Dance Captain): After 13 years as a dancer at Dancers' Corner, with 8 years spent competing in dance, Sarah joined the local theater community, (in NCCT and Lebanon High School's Wet Paint Players).
