But now he's helming a band called The Disciplines. "I liked that the word could connote something scientific and nerdy, and at the same time something sordid and nasty," said Ken. The Disciplines play scruffy balls-to-the-wall rock – 70s Detroit-style. Oh, and three of the band members are Norwegians still studying for medical and educational qualifications. All fuel to the fire for Ken's punky mix of sarcasm and political riffing on latest album Virgins of Menace. So how does an American, now living in France, form a band with three Norwegians? "Well, my Norwegian sucks," joked Ken. "Jeg snakke ikke Norsk!" Ken was approached by the band Briskeby, who had chart success in Norway. "They looked me up, being fans, and we ended up collaborating on a hit single," explained Ken. "Then they broke up. Just like that." So Ken formed the Disciplines with three of the band members from Briskeby. "In many ways, I'm the musical equivalent of academia," said Ken "It's important I publish, but almost no one in the wider world can understand what I do, nor do they even hear it. Thank god for enthusiastic, more successful musicians who scoop me up and give me gigs, right?" After the critical success of their first album Smoking Kills released in 2009, Ken has taken fame and success in his stride.

  • An Interview with Daughters Guitarist,Keep on Moving: Howling
Anthony Savino Does a Good Job: The artist discusses his evolution and facing the abyss What better way to kick off the new year than discussing Anthony Savino’s thoughtful, ambitious release Good Job, which tackles weighty topics like wealth, work and love — ideas that might have made an appearance in your resolutions for 2020. For a decade, Savino fronted the New Bedford-based punk band Half Hearted Hero, which now plays as Dream Job. Savino’s solo work takes a more straightforward approach and puts the spotlight on the lyrics. Good Job’s unvarnished production doesn’t add a lot of fluff, and the playing is subtle enough to make the songs a vehicle for Savino’s rich storytelling. “North” has a sort of bossa nova lite feel and explores the realities of growing up. “Someone Else’s Dime” is a take on the enterprise that is the American desire to succeed: “One size American dream/I’m free and bored and rich on someone else’s dime/I see the stores and silver circles fill my eyes.” The stripped-down “Work Harder” candidly explores what it means to build your craft as an artist while balancing the need to make money and keep the plates spinning. “Thick Line” has a country ballad vibe and talks about the powerful men called out for their behavior in this more enlightened era. I recently spoke with Savino about the new album and his thoughts on songwriting. Jake Bissaro (Motif): You’re probably best known in punk/alternative circles for your work in Half- Hearted Hero.

ASK SCOTT Downloaded from the Loud Family / Music: What Happened? website and re-ordered into July-Dec 1997 (Year 1: the start of Ask Scott) July 21, 1997 Scott, what's your favorite pizza? Jeffrey Norman Scott: My favorite pizza place ever was Symposium Greek pizza in Davis, CA, though I'm relatively happy at any Round Table. As for my favorite topping, just yesterday I was rereading "Ash Wednesday" by T.S. Eliot (who can guess the topping?): Lady, three white leopards sat under a juniper-tree In the cool of the day, having fed to satiety On my legs my heart my liver and that which had been contained In the hollow round of my skull. And God said Shall these bones live? shall these Bones live? And that which had been contained In the bones (which were already dry) said chirping: Because of the goodness of this Lady And because of her loveliness, and because She honours the Virgin in meditation, We shine with brightness. And I who am here dissembled Proffer my deeds to oblivion, and my love To the posterity of the desert and the fruit of the gourd. It is this which recovers My guts the strings of my eyes and the indigestible portions Which the leopards reject. A: pepperoni. honest pizza, --Scott August 14, 1997 Scott, what's your astrological sign? Erin Amar Scott: Erin, wow! How are you? Aries. Do you think you are much like the publicized characteristics of that sun sign? Some people, it's important to know their signs; not me.

  • Ken Stringfellow
ken stringfellow Ken Stringfellow: Too old to be making records? Not interesting? Reggae?!?? What’s wrong with this guy? I ask myself these questions. In fact, what you read above was my brain in the process of asking them, you just happened to overhear. There is no reason for me to make records. They cost thousands of dollars to make. They aren’t really relevant to any of the cultural movements that people generally refer to in the Great Discussions of cultural movements. They are small things, really. Just some things to pass the time. The truth is I feel compelled to make a shareable form of these musical and lyrical ideas as they come to me. I grapple with the concepts of these ideas as important messages that have been given to me to relay to the world (you often see mentally ill people tor- mented by this kind of thing—I can, with all sincerity, sympathize), or as cosmic background chatter come to life. I am not able to view this objectively, and there is probably no correct answer. I am supposed to write the born-in-a-log-cabin story here. I wasn’t. I was born in Hollywood. People come to Hollywood to get famous. People born in Hollywood, evidently, move to Westchester County with their parents when they are babies and eventually write reggae songs about the nature of the soul at the time of the formation of the world. I am not famous. Some people have expressed interest in my work over the years with the Posies, Big Star, REM, Lagwagon, etc.
