A Far Cry announces Season Seven
Boston, May 8, 2013 – A Far Cry, the self-conducted chamber orchestra, announces its seventh and most ambitious season to date.
The Boston season has expanded in several notable ways. This year, A Far Cry will present four concerts in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, doubling its presence there. Meanwhile, the group’s residency at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum brings six more programs to the table; four as part of its Sunday series and two genre-bending Avant Gardner Thursday evening shows. The four Sunday shows are also heard at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jamaica Plain on Saturday afternoons as part of A Far Cry’s local community series. This year A Far Cry is proud to share the news that all four of those community concerts can be heard free of charge, made possible in part by the Free for All Concert Fund.
Another new direction for A Far Cry’s Season Seven deals with large-scale collaboration. Twice in the season, A Far Cry will be working in depth with other groups: the Urbanity Dance Company and the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth. In both cases, the result of the collaboration will be a world premiere that embraces the connection between both groups – original choreography from Urbanity’s Betsi Graves, and a collaborative work by Caroline Shaw, newly the youngest composer to receive a Pulitzer.
Further world premieres commissioned by A Far Cry are on the way from composer Erik Nielson and toy pianist Phyllis Chen, who will also be soloing with the ensemble. Violists Kim Kashkashian and Helen Callus will also be performing concerti with the collective this year; Kashkashian playing Schnittke’s terrifying “Monologue” and Callus offering the newly reconstructed Bach Viola Concerto in E-Flat.
Also visible on stage at various times throughout the season will be several outstanding students from different programs that A Far Cry is collaborating with – entrepreneurial Fellows from NEC and competition winners from its Prep Department, and students from Project STEP, an organization working to address the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities in classical music.

About A Far Cry:
A Far Cry stands at the forefront of an exciting new generation in classical music. According to the New York Times, the self-conducted orchestra “brims with personality or, better, personalities, many and varied.” A Far Cry was founded in 2007 by a tightly-knit collective of 17 young professional musicians – the Criers – and since the beginning has fostered those personalities, developing an innovative structure of rotating leadership both on stage and behind the scenes. By expanding the boundaries of orchestral repertoire and experimenting with the ways music is prepared, performed, and experienced, A Far Cry has been embraced throughout the world with more than two hundred performances, three albums, a powerful presence on the internet, and a successful European debut tour. The Criers are proud to call Boston home, and maintain strong roots in the city rehearsing at their storefront music center in Jamaica Plain and fulfilling the role of Chamber Orchestra in Residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Collaborating with local

A Far Cry is generously supported in part by the Free for All Concert Fund, the Harvard Musical Association, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
