Signature: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis explores the development of coffin furniture, the inscribed plates and other metal objects used to decorate coffins, in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century London. It analyses this material within funerary and non-funerary contexts, and contrasts and compares its styles, production, use and contemporary significance with those of monuments and mourning jewellery. Over 1200 coffin plates were recorded for this study, dated 1740 to 1853, consisting of assemblages from the vaults of St Marylebone Church and St Bride’s Church and the lead coffin plates from Islington Green burial ground, all sites in central London. The production, trade and consumption of coffin furniture are discussed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 investigates coffin furniture as a central component of the furnished coffin and examines its role within the performance of the funeral. Multiple aspects of the inscriptions and designs of coffin plates are analysed in Chapter 5 to establish aspects of change and continuity with this material. In Chapter 6 contemporary trends in monuments are assessed, drawing on a sample recorded in churches and a burial ground, and the production and use of this above-ground funerary material culture are considered. -

THE POLITICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SHILOH ORACLE BY JOH. LINDBLOM Lund The famous passage in "the Blessing of Jacob" (Gen. xlix) about the sceptre that shall not depart from Judah "until he comes to Shiloh" (or "until Shiloh comes") belongs to the most discussed passages in the Old Testament. Dozens of explanations have been brought forward, but none of them has been able satisfactorily to dispel the obscureness that covers the extraordinarily ambiguous words. The space I have at my disposai in this volume does not aUow me to give a report of the various explanations. I presume that aU the scholars who are going to read trus artide are weU acquainted with them. 1) Without spenrung many introductory words, I shall go directly in medias res, presenting an attempt of my own to solve the problem connected with the curious Judah orade v. 10, wruch has vexed so many generations of biblical scholars. I venture to do that although I have slight hopes that the debate will thereby be settled. In the ancient Hebrew poetry the tribe poem is a dearly distinguish able species though there are very scanty remnants of it in the Bibie. The tribe poem aimed at celebrating or blaming, from various points of view, the different tribes belonging to the group of tribes wruch reckoned Jacob as their ancestor and, after the occupation of the promised land, were comprised under the name of "Israel". Of this Hterature we have only two rustinct examples in the Old Testament: "the Blessing of Jacob" and "the Blessing of Moses" (Deut. -

Racist Apocalypse: Millennialism on the Far Right Michael Barkun For the last quarter-century, America has been saturated with apocalyptic themes. Indeed, not since the 1830sand '40s haveso many visions oftheendbeen disseminated to so wide an audience.1 Current apocalyptic scenarios range from secular forecasts of nuclear war and environmental collapse, articulated by Robert Heilbroner and others, to the Biblically-based premillennialism of Hal Lindsey and Jerry Falwell.2 While the former have spread widely among secular intellectuals, and the latter among a large fundamentalist audience, they do not exhaust America's preoccupation with the end of history. There are other future visions, neither so respectable nor so widely held, at the fringes of American religious and political discourse. While these outer reaches of the American mind are filled with many complex growths, my concern here is with one form the fringe apocalypse has taken, as part of the ideology of the racist right. These are the groups customarily referred to in the media as "white supremacist" and "neo-Nazi." While they are uniformly committed to doctrines of racial superiority and are often open admirers of the Third Reich, to categorize them merely as "white supremacist" or "neo-Nazi" is simplistic, for these organizations bear little resemblance to earlier American fringe-right manifestations.3 The groups most representative of the new tendencies include Aryan Nations in Hayden Lake, Idaho; the now-defunct Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord, whose fortified community was located near Pontiac, Missouri, until 1985; and most elements of the Ku Klux Klan and Posse Comitatus. -

Prophecy in the Age of Revolution.1 Deborah Madden Protestant interpretations of Biblical prophecy, its imagery, language and structure, have inspired multiple re-enactments of the Bible’s archetypes in numerous subcultures and geographical contexts.2 More generally, this tradition has produced dissenters, missionaries, prophets, radicals, writers, artists and composers, who, from Mede, Milton and Bunyan, through to Handel and Blake, have created many different millennial visions. Metaphorical appropriations of Jerusalem and the ‘Promised Land’ have featured heavily in the Anglo- American cultural and literary imagination, where the ‘homeland’ has also been visualised in golden utopian hues.3 More controversially, perhaps, is where covenantal Protestantism has literally built ‘moral geographies’ and ‘elect’ communities, thereby providing a materialist 1 This chapter has been re-worked from an earlier monograph on Richard Brothers, The Paddington prophet: Richard Brothers’s journey to Jerusalem (Manchester, 2010). Perhaps the most prominent example of trans-Atlantic prophetic millenarianism can be seen in the Shakers under Mother Ann Lee, who, in 1774, set sail for colonial America with a small group of believers. -

The Need for Teaching the Eschatological Gospel of Both Comings of Jesus Christ in the 21st Century . 1.3.3.1 Parousia Prophecies Two of the Parousia prophecies were highlighted by Justin Martyr in his Dialogue with Trypho, a Jew (Falls 1965; Hebert 2004a). In roughly half of this document, Justin tries to prove that Jesus Christ was the Messiah that the Jews were anticipating. He addresses “Elijah coming first” in Malachi 3:1 and 4:5 as two separate comings/advents. Malachi 3:1, corresponding to Isaiah 40:1-17, speaks about John the Baptist (confirmed by Jesus Himself in Matt 11:7-11; 17:10-13). Malachi 4:5 speaks of another messenger (maybe one of the two witnesses of Rev 11:3-12) coming prior to the Parousia. Justin Martyr then continues on with the thought of the Messiah‟s two advents by quoting Genesis 49:8-12, Jacob‟s (Israel‟s) prophetic statement about Judah and his descendents. He points out that the scepter or ruler‟s staff (kingship) will not depart until “Shiloh” comes, then “He ties the foal to the vine and donkey‟s colt to the choice vine and washes his garments in wine and his robes in the blood of grapes.” He goes on to explain that Jesus is Shiloh, the last king, and there will be no more Old Testament type kings until the Second Advent. The Gentiles are the foal, accepting Jesus as the Christ. Jesus came as a donkey‟s colt without the yoke of the Law, as symbolized by His riding a donkey‟s colt into Jerusalem (prophesied by Zech 9:9). -

After the Byzantine period, when Shiloh was an important Christian cult place, it disappeared from the written sources and started to be identified with Nebi Samwil. In the 12th century Shiloh reappeared in the travelogues of Muslims, and shortly thereafter, in ones by Jews. Although most of the traditions had to do with the Tabernacle, some traditions started to identify Shiloh with the tomb of Eli and his family. The present study looks at the relationship between the practice of ziyara (“visit” in Arabic), which was characterized by the veneration of tombs, and the cult in Shiloh. The paper also surveys archeological finds in Shiloh that attest to a medieval cult and compares them with the written sources. In addition, it presents testimonies by Christians about Jewish cultic practices, along with testimonies about the cult place shared by Muslims and Jews in Shiloh. Examination of the medieval cult in Shiloh provides a broader perspective on an uninstitutionalized regional cult. Keywords: Shiloh; medieval period; Muslim archeology; travelers 1.
