St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – Memphis, TN May 2019 – July 2019 Dr. Seth Karol, Leukemia Department, St. Jude Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program • Identified demographic and treatment-related predictors of cardiotoxicity in early pediatric ALL survivors treated on the TOTAL TXV (NCT00137111) or TXVI (NCT00137111) protocols and seen in the After Completion of Therapy (ACT) Clinic at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. • Determined the incidence of abnormal echocardiograms as evidenced by left ventricular strain in the above population. • Studied the relationship between left ventricular global longitudinal peak strain (LV GLPS) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LV EF) in the evaluation of cardiotoxicity. IU Simon Cancer Center – Indianapolis, IN May 2015 – August 2015 Korc Lab Summer Intern, Undergraduate Research for Prospective Physician-Scientists & Physician-Engineers • Performed genotyping, DNA cloning using PCR, gel extraction, bacterial transformation, plasmid isolation, and gene sequencing. • Designed and inserted DNA tags into the N- and C- terminals of two open reading frames in an uncharacterized gene using PCR cloning techniques for later protein purification and analysis. • Used the R programming language to identify potential gene targets for pancreatic cancer therapies. SIG goals include allowing students a chance engage with their own creativity, build relationships with medical professionals and patients, learn about the therapeutic effects of music and the arts, and encourage a more integrative approach to medical treatment, patient and provider wellness, and mental health. • Received support from Dr. Mary Rorro (MD), a New Jersey-based psychiatrist and founder of the “A Few Good Notes” VA music program, to establish this SIG at IUSM.
