PACIFIC DIVISON POSTSEASON FORMAT

On Feb. 5, 2021, the San Diego Gulls and the American Hockey League (AHL) began the 2020-21 season. However, the season has been an untraditional and unique one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three AHL clubs, the , and , opted out of the season, while several others temporarily relocated operations and were realigned into different divisions, including the Pacific Division’s .

Additionally, several AHL clubs were granted provisional relocations for the 2020-21 season, including San Diego. The Gulls moved to FivePoint Arena at Great Park Ice in Irvine, to ensure all players within the Anaheim Ducks organization were in one location under the same health protocols. The Gulls remain committed to San Diego long-term and will return to Pechanga Arena San Diego for the 2021-22 season.

On Apr. 29, 2021, as the 2020-21 AHL season was coming to a close, the AHL President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Howson announced the league would not be able to conduct traditional Calder Cup Playoffs in 2021. However, each of the league’s five divisions were provided the opportunity to independently determine its own postseason format

While four of the league’s five divisions decided to not host a postseason, the members of the Pacific Division elected to complete the 2020-21 season with a playoff tournament to determine a division champion. The tournament winner will be awarded the John D. Chick Trophy as champions of the Pacific Division. The Chick Trophy has been presented to an AHL division champion annually since 1961-62.

On May 17, 2021, the AHL announced the format and schedule of the 2021 Pacific Division Playoffs, with all seven teams participating.
