More detailed information will be available on the Woodcote village website, www.woodcote-online.co.uk , and in Woodcote Library. Woodcote is a village of just under 2,700 people in the administrative district of South Oxfordshire. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the parish runs down the scarp edge of the Chiltern Hills towards the Thames Valley. Its highest point is 185 metres above sea level; the lowest at 60 metres. The Woodcote Parish Plan sets out the views of residents on their village and its future. Woodcote has already carried out village appraisals - in 1984, 1991 and 2000 - and the Parish Plan has built on the experience of that work. However, a Parish Plan is not simply an appraisal by another name. It clearly sets out its aims for the future of the village, and must be taken into account by those concerned with making any changes to village life. -
Conservation Area Character Appraisal
Introduction & Summary of the Principal Purposes of the Pyrton Conservation Area Character Appraisal This draft Conservation Appraisal has been prepared by Asset Heritage Consulting Ltd. on behalf of Pyrton Parish Council as a result of the recent completion of the pre-submission consultation draft of the Pyrton Neighbourhood Plan. In this context both the Neighbourhood Plan and the draft Appraisal accord with paragraph 58 of the NPPF, which states that ‘….neighbourhood plans should develop robust and comprehensive policies that set out the quality of development that will be expected for the area…such policies should be based on stated objectives for the future of the area and an understanding and evaluation of its defining characteristics’. By providing a thorough and comprehensive description and analysis of the existing Pyrton Conservation Area, together with making a detailed and sustainable case for proposed extensions to the currently designated area, the draft Appraisal provides a clear and objective assessment of the ‘special architectural and historic interest’ of the present conservation area and the proposed extensions to it, as required by Section 71 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. In this way the ‘special’ interest of the existing conservation area and the proposed extensions to it is clearly articulated. But this is not to say that the conservation area should be seen in isolation from the rural and historic character of the wider area. Indeed, as made clear in Terence O’Rourke’s recent Landscape & Visual Appraisal (completed in October 2016), the fields between Watlington and Pyrton perform a vital role in Draft Pyrton Conservation Area Appraisal Page 2 October 2017 separating Pyrton from its larger, urban neighbour and helping to prevent their potential unwelcome coalescence. -

This study examines Island-centred historical and topographical material published 1750-1840 in conjunction with journals and diaries kept by contemporary visitors. -

Newsletter 171 28/7/08 10:18 AM Page 1 THE FURNITURE HISTORY SOCIETY Newsletter No. 171 August 2008 ‘SUCH COSTLY FURNITURE, SUCH BEDS OF STATE’*: REFLECTIONS ON THE CONSERVATION AND RE-DISPLAY OF QUEEN CHARLOTTE’S STATE BED This Summer and Autumn visitors to Hampton Court will have the opportunity to see Queen Charlotte’s magnificent bed, from the Royal Collection, for the first time in years as major conservation work reaches completion (figure 1). This work has a complex and chequered history of its own: what began in the 1950s as good, but old fashioned, restoration work transformed into conservation, only to be interrupted by the devastating fire of 1986. One of the benefits of this drawn-out process is the new information it has produced about the bed’s enigmatic past. The bed comes near the end of the line of great four-poster state beds in England. It is a relic of a bygone age of elaborate court etiquette and was probably never slept in. Within years of its creation the Royal Household had been drastically reformed and even the very proper George III and Queen Charlotte had little practical use for such empty show. As well as being a significant expression of the queen’s individual patronage and taste, its design is in the very latest neo-classical style. Unlike many eighteenth-century royal objects the precise origins of the bed are obscured among the records of the queen’s private purse (the choice of funds is significant as it betrays the Queen’s close personal interest). -

4/02488/16/FUL - CONSTRUCTION OF DETACHED HOUSE (AMENDED SCHEME). THE WALLED GARDEN, STOCKS ROAD, ALDBURY, TRING, HP23 5RZ. APPLICANT: Mr & Mrs Garfarth. [Case Officer - Andrew Parrish] Summary The application is recommended for refusal. The application proposes the construction of a detached dwelling of contemporary design in a rural location adjacent to the original walled garden of Stocks House, Aldbury. The proposal is considered to be inappropriate in principle in the Rural Area. The site is not considered to constitute previously developed land. However, even if it were, in accordance with NPPF, it should not be assumed that the whole of the curtilage should be developed. In this case the site is undeveloped and further development would harm the character and appearance of the countryside, contrary to point (i.) of CS7. Furthermore, as the site is within the Chilterns AONB, it is prima facie of the highest environmental value and therefore, in accordance with NPPF, little weight can be given to the argument that development should be encouraged here. The applicant has argued that if the Council is satisfied that the design of the dwelling is of exceptional quality or innovative nature, as provided for in para. 55 of the NPPF, planning permission can be granted for a new dwelling in the countryside under special circumstances. The 4 relevant tests set out in para. 55 have been considered in detail. Whilst the Conservation Officers consider the proposed dwelling to be of a high standard and to make a positive contribution to the area's architecture, they nevertheless consider that in the location proposed, the new building would not relate well to either the adjacent walled garden or the rural character and appearance of the site and immediate area. -
