UNIT 40 LO1 – THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE POWERPOINT PURPOSE THE PURPOSE OF THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE IS TO ENTERTAIN PEOPLE. THE REASON WHY I KNOW THIS IS BECAUSE THE HAUNTING OF ILL HOUSE ISN’T INFORMATIVE ALSO IT ISN’T EDUCATING ANYONE WHICH IMPLIES THAT THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE JUST WANTS TO EDUCATE PEOPLE. THE REASON WHY I KNOW THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE’S PURPOSE IT TO EDUCATE PEOPLE IS BECAUSE THEY TRY AND GET PEOPLE’S ATTENTION BY MAKING A SHOW ON STUFF THAT IT NOT REAL SUCH AS MONSTERS AND ALSO, USE SPECIAL EFFECTS TO SCARE PEOPLE SO THEY CAN FEEL DIFFERENT EMOTIONS SO THEY WILL WATCH IT MORE. CONTENT The Haunted of Hill House use different types of camera angles. Types of camera angles that were used are long shot, medium shot, close up and an overview shot. The haunting of Hill house. In the haunting of Hill House there is different variety of sounds and songs but the songs are mostly, scary and creepy. An example of a close camera shot and when the lighting is dim is when Mrs Walker saw her dead husband but which isn’t really her dead husband it’s an evil entity. The camera focuses on the dead entity by going on a close low angle which makes Mrs walker and the car bigger and noticeable. The characters are very powerful. When it comes to the series because they all play a great role even if it is big or small. The characters are Hugh Crain who gets played by Henry Thomas and Steve Crane who gets played by Michael Huisman and Shirley Crain Harris who gets played Elizabeth Reaser and also, Theodora Crain who gets played by Kate Siegel, Olivia Crain who gets played by Carla Gugino every member who plays a role in the series makes the whole of the Netflix programme more tense and makes Sure, it affects the audience in a good way. The costumes what the character’s wear are very casual It’s like what people would wear on a regular day. This gives the audience an idea that the characters are just normal people but bad things are happening. In advance you could say to make It scarier and to affect the audience you could say that it could happen to them not a strong opinion but could make the audience think that by just seeing what the characters are wearing. The lighting is very different when it comes to different scenes, if it’s an eerie scene the lighting Is very dim to bring out the bloodcurdling monsters. The director of The Haunting of Hill House is Mike Flanagan and he is also, the writer as well followed by Elizabeth Ann, Jeff Howard, Scott Kosar, Rebecca Klingler, Charise Smith and Meredith Averill. There is just one season for the Haunting of Hill House but throughout the whole series they make sure that it is very intense and emotion changing for the audience. MEANING The meaning of the Haunting of Hill House to scare people for strictly, entertainment. They use a variety of lighting and special effects to make sure people are scared and Also, the reoccurring themes are freedom and fear. The reason why is because During the seasons of the Haunting of Hill House the cast is mostly, in fear and They don’t want to see a scary image of their loved ones that have passed away. The reason why freedom is another Reoccurring theme is because they want to be free away from the bad spirits which is haunting them. GENRE The haunting of Hill House genre and sub-genre are Horror Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Gothic Fiction and Psychological Horror. The reason why these are the genres of the Haunting of Hill House is because firstly, everything is fake the monsters aren’t real and when someone gets possessed it isn’t real and also, the theme Is black which relates to Horror and also death which obviously, relates to the Horror. The way how Psychological Horror suits the haunting of Hill House is because throughout the series in the characters head they can see ghosts and dead people who they were once close with. Also, another sub-Genre for the haunting of hill house is Sci-fi and that’s because the characters claim that they can see ghosts. TARGET AUDIENCE The primary target audience is for people that enjoy watching Horror and the secondary target audience is for people that watch films and series on Netflix and the reason for that is Because The haunting of Hill House is currently, on Netflix. There is no target for gender you can watch The Haunting of Hill House if you’re male or female it doesn’t matter. If you’re into Horror and drama You will be very interested into the series because the whole of the series is very eerie and tense. Another thing About the target audience is that the age is for 15 years and the reason for that is because there is themes of Suicide, deaths and jump scares. Even though kids might watch it, it's very recommended that people 15+ only Watch it. Also, people that are fans of Michael Huisman who stars in Game of Thrones, Treme and the age of Adaline Also, people that are fans of Elizabeth Reaser who stars in the popular Twilight and Easy and Young Adults. Another, target audience is for people who are fans of the director Mike Flanagan who has directed Oculus, Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, Hush and Before I wake which are some very popular movies which people enjoy to watch. Lastly, people who are fans of Henry Thomas would enjoy the Haunting of Hill House because he stars In E.T, Legends of the fall and Gangs of New York . THE WAY THE FILM HAS ROMANCE IS BECAUSE DURING THE FILM THE MOTHER OF THE FAMILY GETS IMPREGNATED BY THE FATHER OF THE FAMILY AND ALSO THE MOTHER AND THE FATHER SLOW DANCE TO LOVE SONGS WHILE IN THE BASEMENT. THE REASON WHY I THINK THERE IS HORROR IN THIS FILM IS BECAUSE THREW OUT THE FILM THERE IS NUMEROUS JUMP SCARES TO FRIGHTEN THE AUDIENCE WHILE WATCHING THE FILM. THIRDLY THE REASON WHY I THINK THERE IS ACTION IN THIS FOLLOWING FILM IS BECAUSE THE FAMILY MOSTLY THE DAD TRIES TO FIGHT THE MONSTERS BACK IN THE SCENE WHEN HE SLOWLY AND CAUTIOUSLY WITHDRAWS THE SHARP AND POINTY AND LIFE ENDING AXE. FINALLY, THE REASON WHY I THINK THERE IS THRILLER IN THIS FILM IS BECAUSE THERE WAS PLENTY OF SCENES THAT CAUSED A LOT OF SUSPENSE AND TO ADD ON TO IT THE MUSIC WAS BUILT UP TO CAUSE MORE SUSPENSE. CONTENT CONTENT- The good things I liked about the content was the camera angles. The reason why I liked the camera angles is because they effected the movie more and made it more productive and the suspense level was more built up and the because of the camera angles it made the film creepier. Another reason why the camera angles made the film scarier and more productive is because they made more than one camera angle. The following camera angles made the film more effective. GENRE GENRE- IN MY EYES, IN MY OPINION I THINK THERE WAS MANY GENRES IN THIS FILM WHICH IS GOOD BECAUSE IT CAN EXPRESS MANY FEELINGS PEOPLE WOULD FEEL WHILE WATCHING THIS FILM. I THINK THE MAIN GENRE IN THIS FILM IS A THRILLER BUT I THINK IT WAS DIVERSE WITH ROMANCE AND ACTION AND HORROR AND COMEDY AND THE REASON WHY IS BECAUSE WITH THRILLER THE MAIN KEY IS SUSPENSE. THRILLERS MAKE PEOPLES HEART BEAT FAST AND MAKE THE SUSPENSE LEVEL RISE AND MAKE PEOPLE THINK WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT AND WITH A QUIET PLACE THAT’S WHAT’S HAPPENED. WITH COMEDY, STUPID THINGS CAN MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH AND AGAIN WITH A QUIET PLACE THAT’S WHAT’S OCCURRED STUPID FUNNY JUMP SCARES WHICH PEOPLE THINK THAT THERE’S A MONSTER THERE WHEN IT WAS JUST A SMALL ANIMAL BUT THEN THIS IS WHY HORROR GOES INTO THE FILM. BECAUSE EVERYONE’S ATTENTION WAS ON THE MONSTER BECAUSE IT THRILLED EVERYONE NO ONE WOULD EXPECT ANYTHING ELSE IN THE FILM BUT THE MONSTERS. TARGET AUDIENCE TARGET AUDIENCE- In total I think this film target primary audience is for teenagers and the secondary target audience is families and the third target audience are aimed everyone. Firstly, reason why I think the primary target audience is teenagers is because teenagers mostly like scary things and suspense just like rollercoasters the majority of teenagers do like thrill and I think a quiet place has thrill and a lot of suspense what will make peoples heart raise a little and also it will make a person think what's going to happen next.

    The Hollywood Novelization: Film As Literature Or Literature As Film Promotion?

    The Hollywood Novelization: Film as Literature or Literature as Film Promotion? Johannes Mahlknecht University of Innsbruck, American Studies Abstract Hollywood movie novelizations are novels based on mainstream films and published about the time these films are released in theaters. The present article explores the ambiguous status of this generally little- esteemed and frequently ignored form of adaptation. On the one hand, novelizations are works of literature that can be enjoyed without knowledge of the film they are based on; on the other, they can be (and often are) seen as mere tools of film advertising. This latter aspect becomes particularly evident when looking at the cover design of a novelization. It invariably features the film’s artwork (the poster image, stills, and/or typography used for promoting the film) and frequently highlights the film’s stars rather than the book’s author. By analyzing a selection of book covers of novelized versions of recent films and comparing the novelization of Terminator Salvation (Foster 2009b) with the film Terminator( Salvation 2009, dir. McG) it is based on, the article traces and exam- ines the frictions between the opposing forces—literature and film marketing—that define the genre. This article was written as part of the research project Framing Media: The Periphery of Fic- tion and Film at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and headed by Mario Klarer. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.
