Elle.Com Article on Kate Siegel's Viola
Elle.com: Bly Manor's Kate Siegel On Why Love-Not Rage-Drives the Lady of the Lake By Emma Dibdin November 13,2020 It's now been a full month since The Haunting of Bly Manor swept onto Netflix and became everybody's favorite spooky, psychologically unsettling fall binge. If the show has been living in your nightmares rent-free, you're not alone. A big part of the reason why is Viola Willoughby, aka The Lady in the Lake. As played by Kate Siegel, Viola/The Lady in the Lake is a force of nature in every sense—a vibrant and ambitious woman whose stubbornness is both a gift and a curse. After developing a fatal lung disease, Viola refuses to accept her own fate, languishing in a hellish limbo between life and death for years before finally being murdered by her own sister. But even in death, she endures, returning as a vengeful spirit whose presence is so powerful she creates a "gravity well" at Bly Manor, dooming everybody who dies on the property to be trapped there forever. Siegel— whose husband is the series creator Mike Flanagan—is one of many Haunting of Hill House alums who returned for the new season (alongside Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson- Cohen and Carla Gugino). She jumped on the phone with ELLE.com to delve into Viola's haunting arc, some of the mysteries surrounding The Lady in the Lake, and the uneasy parallels between Bly Manor and Donald Trump's delusional response to his 2020 election loss. What kind of conversations did you have with Mike about returning for Bly Manor after playing Theo in Hill House? Early on, Mike was prepping for the new season and he was talking to me about what it would be, but at a certain point I stopped asking about it. -

Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past-some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House. The 10-episode series stars Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel and Victoria Pedretti star, as well as Lulu Wilson, McKenna Grace, Paxton Singleton, Violet McGraw and Julian Hilliard. FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue. -

The Hollywood Novelization: Film As Literature Or Literature As Film Promotion?
The Hollywood Novelization: Film as Literature or Literature as Film Promotion? Johannes Mahlknecht University of Innsbruck, American Studies Abstract Hollywood movie novelizations are novels based on mainstream films and published about the time these films are released in theaters. The present article explores the ambiguous status of this generally little- esteemed and frequently ignored form of adaptation. On the one hand, novelizations are works of literature that can be enjoyed without knowledge of the film they are based on; on the other, they can be (and often are) seen as mere tools of film advertising. This latter aspect becomes particularly evident when looking at the cover design of a novelization. It invariably features the film’s artwork (the poster image, stills, and/or typography used for promoting the film) and frequently highlights the film’s stars rather than the book’s author. By analyzing a selection of book covers of novelized versions of recent films and comparing the novelization of Terminator Salvation (Foster 2009b) with the film Terminator( Salvation 2009, dir. McG) it is based on, the article traces and exam- ines the frictions between the opposing forces—literature and film marketing—that define the genre. This article was written as part of the research project Framing Media: The Periphery of Fic- tion and Film at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and headed by Mario Klarer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Meir Sternberg and the anonymous referees of Poetics Today for their many priceless suggestions that helped improve this article. -
You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power. -
