REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1.1 Literature

Literature comes from the latin “litteratura” which is etymologically derived from the word littera (letter or hand writing). Literature is writing considered to be an art from, or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intelectual value. According to MursalEsten (1978 : 9) literature is the expression or artistic facts and imaginative as a manifestation of human life,

(society) through language as a medium and has a positive effect on human life (humanity).

Rees (1973 : 9) said that permanent expression in words of some thoughts or letters have a freedom to express their ideas and improve their imagination.

There are three major divisions of literatur, they are prose, drama, and poetry.

According to Thomas Carlyle poetry is an “expression of the musical mind.

The poet created the poetry in the minds of the melodious sound of music in his poetry, the words arranged in such a way that the prominent is a series of melodious sounds like music, that is by using sound orchestra”. Indirectly poetry almost have in common with song, so it is not uncommon to mention that poetry is the embryo of a song or the song is a revolutionary of poetry.

1.2 Value In Literature

Value is something high, valuable, important, and useful for human. Value is a belief or feeling that is believed to be an identity which gives a special

5 Universitas Sumatera Utara pattern to a way of thinking, feeling, attachment and behavior (Ahmadi,

1991). The value is closely related to the way people assess. Assesing means to consider human activities that connect something to something else, which is further to take a decision. This assessment is linked with elements in humans such as physical, creativity, initiative, sense and conviction.

Value and literature are complementary and are inseparable. Literary works were born and sourced from human life and have a high value.

Literature will be a contribution to the formation of values so that lovers of literature will be civilized, well mannered, and virtous men and agreeing with the applicable rules. The values in the literature usually reflect the views of the author life or values that are attractive to the author and are necessary to convey to the reader.

The word “moral’ always refers to the good or the bad people as people, so that fields of human life are seen in terms of kindness as human (Margis in

Budiningsih 2004). Overall the moral teachings are norms and understandings

6

Universitas Sumatera Utara determining the things which are considered good and bad. Consideration of good or bad something is something that would generate moral, as a generic concept.

Shaffer (1994) as quoted in Shaffer, (2009 : 532) mentions moral as the capacity : (1) distinguish between wrong and right, (2) different action, and (3) proud experience in good acts and there is guilt while acts outside standard norm”. The Script’s sophomore effort, science and faith, followed in September of

2010, extending their global reach further by hitting the Top Five in both

Australia and the U.S but also reaching the number one spot in both the U.K and

Ireland, just as their debut had done. Summer 2011 brought packed-out arena shows in South Africa, but also saw them play to 55.000 people at a headline show in Dublin, a performance that was later released as the concert film

Homecoming.

During the first half of 2012, O’Donoghue futher raised the profile of the band when he appeared as a judge alongside Tom Jones, Jessie J, Will.i.am on

1.”Hall of Fame”

Yeah, you could be the greatest You can be the best You can be the King Kong banging on your chest You could beat the world You could beat the war You could talk to God, go banging on his door You can throw your hands up You can beat the clock You can move a mountain You can break rocks You can be a master Don't wait for luck Dedicate yourself and you can find yourself Standing in the hall of fame And the world's gonna know your name 'Cause you burn with the brightest flame And the world's gonna know your name And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame You could go the distance You could run the mile You could walk straight through hell with a smile You could be the hero You could get the gold Breaking all the records that thought, never could be broke Do it for your people Do it for your pride How you ever gonna know if you never even try?

Do it for your country Do it for your name Cause there’s gonna be a day

When you’re standing in the hall of fame (yeah) And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah) Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah) And the world’s gonna know your name (yeah) And you’ll be on the walls of the hall of fame

2.”Superheroes”

All the life she has seen All the meaner side of me They took away the prophet's dream For a profit on the street

Now she's stronger than you know A heart of steel starts to grow

All his life he's been told He'll be nothing when he's old All the kicks and all the blows He won't ever let it show

'Cause he's stronger than you know A heart of steel starts to grow

When you've been fighting for it all your life You've been struggling to make things right That's how a superhero learns to fly Every day, every hour, turn the pain into power

When you've fighting for it all your life You've been working every day and night That's how a superhero learns to fly Every day, every hour, turn the pain into power

Oh-oh, oh, oh Oh-oh, oh, oh All the hurt, all the lies All the tears that they cry When the moment is just right You see fire in their eyes

3.”Rain”

Woke up this morning, can't shake the thunder from last night You left with no warning and took the summer from my life I gave you my everything, now my world it don't seem right Can we just go back to being us again? 'Cause when I'm sitting in the bar All the lovers with umbrellas always pass me by It's like I'm living in the dark And my heart's turned cold since you left my life And no matter where I go Girl, I know if I'm alone, there'll be no blue sky I don't know what I'm doing wrong 'Cause baby, when you're gone All it does is rain, rain, rain down on me Each drop is pain, pain, pain when you leave It's such a shame we fucked it up, you and me

Universitas Sumatera Utara 4.”The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”

Going back to the corner where I first saw you Gonna camp in my sleeping bag I'm not gonna move Got some words on cardboard, got your picture in my hand Saying, "If you see this girl can you tell her where I am?" Some try to hand me money, they don't understand I'm not broke I'm just a broken hearted man I know it makes no sense but what else can I do How can I move on when I'm still in love with you 'Cause if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be Thinkin' maybe you'll come back here to the place that we'd meet And you'll see me waiting for you on our corner of the street So I'm not moving, I'm not moving Policeman says, "Son you can't stay here" I said, "There's someone I'm waiting for if it's a day, a month, a year" Gotta stand my ground even if it rains or snows If she changes her mind this is the first place she will go 'Cause if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be Thinking maybe you'll come back here to the place that we'd meet And you'll see me waiting for you on our corner of the street So I'm not moving, I'm not moving I'm not moving, I'm not moving People talk about the guy that's waiting on a girl There are no holes in his shoes but a big hole in his world Maybe I'll get famous as the man who can't be moved Maybe you won't mean to but you'll see me on the news And you'll come running to the corner 'Cause you'll know it's just for you I'm the man who can't be moved I'm the man who can't be moved 'Cause if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me (find that you're missing me) And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be (where on this earth I could be) Thinkin' maybe you'll come back here to the place that we'd meet (to the place that we'd meet) And you'll see me waiting for you on our corner of the street 'cause if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me (I'm not moving) and your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be

5.”Breakeven”

I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing Just prayin' to a god that I don't believe in 'Cause I got time while she got freedom 'Cause when a heart breaks no it don't break even Her best days will be some of my worst She finally met a man that's gonna put her first While I'm wide awake she's no trouble sleeping 'Cause when a heart breaks no it don't break even, even, no What am I supposed to do when the best part of me was always you, And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up and you're OK I'm falling to pieces, yeah I'm falling to pieces They say bad things happen for a reason But no wise words gonna stop the bleeding 'Cause she's moved on while I'm still grieving And when a heart breaks no it don't breakeven even, no What am I gonna to do when the best part of me was always you, And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up and you're OK I'm falling to pieces, yeah I'm falling to pieces, yeah I'm falling to pieces (One still in love while the other ones leaving) I'm falling to pieces ('Cause when a heart breaks no it don't breakeven) Oh you got his heart and my heart and none of the pain You took your suitcase, I took the blame Now I'm try'na make sense of what little remains ooh 'Cause you left me with no love and no love to my name I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing Just prayed to a god that I don't believe in 'Cause I got time while she got freedom 'Cause when a heart breaks no it don't break No it don't break No it don't breakeven no What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you and What am I suppose to say when I'm all choked up and you're OK

6.”Nothing”

Am I better off dead? Am I better off a quitter? They say I'm better off now Than I ever was with her As they take me to my local down the street I'm smiling but I'm dying, trying not to drag my feet They say a few drinks will help me to forget her But after one too many, I know that I'm never Only they can see where this is gonna end They all think I'm crazy but to me it's perfect sense And my mates are all there tryna calm me down 'Cause I'm shouting your name all over town I'm swearing if I go there now I can change her mind turn it all around And I know that I'm drunk but I'll say the words And she'll listen this time even though they're slurred So I dialed her number and confessed to her I'm still in love but all I heard was nothing So I stumble there, along the railings and the fences I know if I faced her face, that she'll come to her senses Every drunk step I take leads me to her door If she sees how much I'm hurting, she'll take me back for sure And my mates are all there tryna calm me down 'Cause I'm shouting your name all over town I'm swearing if I go there now I can change her mind turn it all around And I know that I'm drunk but I'll say the words And she'll listen this time even though they're slurred So I dialed her number and confessed to her I'm still in love but all I heard was nothing (nothing, nothing)
