AllAll rightsrights reserved.reserved. 17 17 17 Knoppix • Most popular of several Run-from-CD distros • Boots from the CD, runs entirely in RAM • Does not use or write to the hard drive • Open Source community -- widely-used = rapid development • Ver 3.6 few months ago • Ver 3.9 now available • This will be probably be the last "single CD" version of KNOPPIX. All rights reserved. 18 18 18 Knoppix Union Filesystem From v3.8, Knoppix uses the Union filesystem • Merges the contents of several directories, while keeping their physical contents separate: merges read- only CD filesystem with read/write ramdisk • Every segment of the filesystem becomes read-write: UnionFS keeps track of which files you have modified (which are stored within the ramdisk). When you access a file in the filesystem that has been modified, UnionFS points you to the copy in ramdisk instead of the copy on the CD-ROM. • Allows for software installation and file/directory and account/password management (this lab) Presentation_ID © 2005 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. 20 20 20 Using Knoppix • put burned CD into drive and restart computer • if the computer is not set to boot from a CD, enter the BIOS by pressing F2 (or DEL or the appropriate key). • In BIOS settings, select the CDROM as the first boot device. All rights reserved. 21 21 21 Knoppix Boot • boot process: • If Knoppix does not recognize the video card—it will scan the video card for the different modes it will support. • A list of resolutions starting with basic VGA (640x480) • It is best to use the selection at the bottom of the list.
