Walton County Marriages, 1885-1915 MARRIAGES WALTON COUNTY, FLORIDA 1885-1915 . Compiled by The Genealogical Society of Okaloosa County MARRIAGES WALTON COUNTY, FJLORIDA 1885-1915 Edited by Florence A. Lembeck Published by The Genealogical Society of Okaloosa CoUJo.ty P.O. Box 1175 Fort Walton Beach, Florida 32549 Copyright© 1996 by The Genealogical Society of Okaloosa County ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Records copied by: Juanita Bass Rebecca Buxton Shirley Hartman Betty Penrose Hill (deceased) Wiley Benjamin Hill, Jr. Charles Million Carolyn Shearer Proofread by: Bernice Twitty Editor's note: Thanks to all who contributed to the publication of this book. Those who copied the records deserve special thanks because of the difficulty of reading the writing. An extra-special note of thanks goes to Rebecca Buxton, who copied the records from 1906 to 1915 which made up more than half the marriages in the book. Located in the Florida Panhandle, Walton County was created in 1824 from Jackson County. However, the courthouse burned in 1885, so records before then do not exist. In 1915 Okaloosa County was formed from Santa Rosa and Walton Counties. Thus, records in this book also include persons from the eastern half of what is now Okaloosa County. N 1 INTRODUCTION Members of the Genealogical Society ofOkaloosa County began copying Walton County marriage records in the 1970s for inclusion in their Journal. This volume compiles those and adds records through 1915. The editor has proofread all of them from the original to help eliminate errors. However, the writing is often difficult to read and spelling is poor. Copier Rebecca Buxton described the spelling as "phonetic and inventive." Names that end with a vowel frequently have an "r" added. Thus, "Lela" becomes "Lelar," "Emma" becomes "Emmer" and "Neter" is probably "Nita." "Burnes" and "Birnes" are probably "Bernice." Lower case "n" is easily confused with "r" and "u." Upper case "R" and "B" are sometimes difficult to distinguish between as are upper case "S" and "L." Often vowels are omitted. Examples : Mllie (Mollie? Millie?) or Jsial1 (Josiall?). Letters arc sometimes reversed: Loius (Louis?). The careful searcher will think of the ways a name could be spelled phonetically. Occasionally a name is spelled one way on the license and another on the recording section or in the index. In this volume, we have shown both spellings with one in parentheses, for instance, Thomson (Thompson). When a name was very difficult to decipher, we show it by placing a question mark after it. When there is a question between two spellings, the second one in parentheses has a question mark after it, i.e., Thomson (Thompson?). There are several instances of a record having no marriage date. Since it was recorded, the marriage must have taken place and we estimate it as being between the license date and the recording date. Occasionally, a license is filled out but no marriage is recorded. The marriage may have taken place, the minister failing to record it, or the couple may have reconsidered. If the searcher fmds a name similar to the one being sought, it would be wise to obtain a copy of the license. Other information to be found on the original includes the following: date of the license, the name and title of the person performing the ceremony, the county clerk's name, the recording date and in later years the names of witnesses. A copy may be obtained from Clerk of Court, Walton County Courthouse, DeFuniak Springs, FL 32433. At the time of this printing the cost of the copy is one dollar along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Index begins on page 92. 2 May 1885 J.W. KIIARA DROPS NEW TRACK & MUSIC VIDEO “OPEN MY MOUTH” – OUT NOW FEATURING DESIGNER CHRISTIAN COWAN AND HIS FALL FW19 RUNWAY LOOKS DEBUT ALBUM SET FOR RELEASE FALL 2019 “OPEN MY MOUTH” SINGLE ART HERE (PHOTO CREDIT: TRENT BARBOZA) NEW YORK, NY (June 7, 2019) – Today, 24-year-old multiplatinum singer-songwriter and “Princess of Chop-Pop” KIIARA debuts a brand new song, “Open My Mouth,” which marks the lead single from her highly anticipated debut album set for release this fall via Atlantic Records. The track, and its accompanying video, gives fans a taste of what’s to come off the forthcoming record – listen HERE. “Open My Mouth,” co-written by Kiiara, Amy Allen (Halsey’s “Without Me”, Selena Gomez’s “Back To You”), Scott Harris (Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothin’ Holding Me Back”), Ian Kirkpatrick (Dua Lipa’s “New Rules”, Julia Michaels’ EP), and Joe London (Pitbull, Jason Derulo, Fifth Harmony) showcases Kiiara’s unique ability to blur the lines between genres with her signature vocals and honest lyrics. “Art is open for interpretation, so while some will listen to this song and relate to it based on relationships they’ve had in their lives, for me this song is about the relationship I have with myself,” Kiiara says of the new track. “I’ve struggled with mental health issues for my entire life. I’ve felt silenced, I’ve felt alone, and I’ve felt afraid. To me, this song is about facing these realities and putting it all out there. It feels empowering to open up and finally speak my truth, and I hope in doing so I can encourage others to let their guard down and do the same, so they don’t feel so alone and helpless.” The accompanying music video, directed by Juliana Carpino, features designer Christian Cowan and fashion from his FW19 line along with a special cameo appearance from Austin Mahone – watch HERE.

  • John Dewey's Theory of Growth and Amy Allen's Feminist Theory of Power Applied to the Work of Domestic Violence Shelters
JOHN DEWEY'S THEORY OF GROWTH AND AMY ALLEN'S FEMINIST THEORY OF POWER APPLIED TO THE WORK OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS Robyn A. Peabody A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2010 Committee: Michael Bradie, Advisor Lillian E. Ashcraft-Eason Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen James Campbell Kathleen Dixon ii ABSTRACT Michael Bradie, Advisor Over the last twenty-five years, there has been an increased interest in bringing together pragmatism and feminism. The dissertation advances this movement. It specifically examines the theory of growth offered by John Dewey and the feminist theory of power outlined by Amy Allen. The dissertation then examines the two theories in relation to the theory and practice of domestic violence emergency shelters. Dewey's theory of growth, which may apply to individual growth, and the work done with individual women in shelters provides a nice point of convergence from which to examine pragmatism and feminism. Before bringing representatives of pragmatism and feminism together, the dissertation addresses a criticism of Dewey's work that presents a potential obstacle to a productive merger. The dissertation alleviates the criticism that Dewey's theory of growth is cryptic and allusive by presenting the theory in light of his central pragmatic commitments. This presentation contextualizes his statements about growth and frames them within a comprehensive theory. In addition, the criticism that Dewey does not significantly address issues of power within his work is potentially problematic for application to the work of domestic violence shelters.
