Spiritual Growth

Pastor’s Message

The spiritual formation of our students is at the very heart of what Our Lady of Sorrows is about. It is the very reason the school was established. In the complexities of our culture we strive to point every student to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Our school is a strong partner to our Parents who are the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith. Together we aim to develop and sustain a student’s relationship with Jesus Christ. We might well say that Our Lady of Sorrows is a “school of discipleship.”

The mission of Catholic education is based on the Our program seeks to achieve this not only through the curriculum’s catechesis, but also through daily prayer in common, the weekly celebration Gospel command of Jesus to “Go and teach.” of Mass, monthly prayer services, Lenten devotions, opportunities for confession and sacramental preparation for First Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Our Lady of Sorrows School History

The Parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Hamilton under the leader- ship of its pastor, Fr. Paul Greco began construction of its parish school in October 1954. The school opened its doors in September 1955 to 279 stu- dents off Grades 1-4. Grades 5-8 were subsequently added so that by 1960 Our Lady of Sorrows graduated its first class of 59 students.

The Marianite Sisters of the Holy Cross were instrumental in directing the school’s early development and growth, aided by lay faculty and staff.

On July 1, 2005, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish was merged with St. Anthony Parish, Hamilton to form a single parish community. The school was placed under the aegis of the newly established parish.

In September 2017, the parish merged its independent Pre-School Program into the Elementary School Program. Today, Our Lady of Sorrows School educates approximately 220 students from PreK through Grade 8.

Left to right: Most Rev. Timothy C. Senor, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and Rector of St. Charles Seminary, Philadelphia, Mrs. Martha Ann Alito, The Hon. Samuel Alito, Associate Justice of the US Supreme Count (native of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish)

I graduated from Our Lady of Sorrows School in 2010 and am currently in my fourth year of studies at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia where I am pursuing ordination to the priesthood. My time at Our Lady of Sorrows had a profound impact on the who I am today. During my years at OLS, I received an excellent education and I was given an academic foundation which allowed me to excel in secondary and in higher studies. This academic foundation, however, is not the greatest gift I received during my nine years in the halls of Our Lady of Sorrows School. In my time at OLS, I was encouraged to develop two skills that have helped me to chart my course in life. The first skill is how to inquire. As a student I learned how to ask the right questions; from those as mundane as, “Where is homeroom?” to those as profound as, “Who is my neighbor?” I learned how to focus my intellect so that in reaching for the truth, I might place my grip on something firm and then reach higher and go further in the search for understanding. The other, and in my opinion, more im- portant skill that was honed during my time as a blue knight is the ability to listen. From an early age, I was taught by my instructors and my classmates, that there is a time to speak and a time to listen. This simple lesson of respect set me on a path that made me realize that often the answers we seek are often hidden in those around us, and that fruitful dialogue cannot exist without respectful listening. It is this skill that has given me insight into who I am before God, what is my due to my neighbor, and what it means to live well. It is ultimately this lesson, learned as a young child at Our Lady of Sorrows School, that I credit for my vocation. It is at Our Lady of Sorrows School that I learned how to hear to Word of God and to answer unreservedly.
