[email protected] 2018-2019 FARMINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RELOCATION MAGAZINE 10 Welcome to FARMINGTON

Whoever said “Home is where the heart is,” had to call Farmington, New Mexico, home. My heart has belonged to this wonderful community for many years. People often ask me “What do you love most about Farmington?” and I am always compelled to respond, “where do I begin?” I am the proud father of four, and schools, sports, values, and culture are important to them. Every weekend, there is something for my family to do together. We visit our amazing public library, take in the several museums, enjoy the city’s aquatic center, attend and participate in sporting events, picnic in one of the city’s beautiful parks, and enjoy the countless family events offered by San Juan College, one of the best community colleges in the southwest. While Farmington has all the amenities of a larger city, it offers a slower, less frantic lifestyle. Friday nights will find most people at a football, basketball, wrestling, softball, baseball, t-ball, or soccer game. Saturdays will find those same people at dance recitals, swim meets, rodeos, or 4-H Club events. It’s all about family here and everybody is family. If you enjoy community involvement, you find much to enjoy in Farmington. Farmington is all about help- ing others, and you’re certain to find a club or organization that will give you the gift of helping others. The spirit of Farmington is very much “small town, big heart.” With the largest single county fair in the state, the San Juan County Fair offers exhibits, a livestock show, concerts, and a carnival. The Connie Mack World Series is the jewel in Farmington’s crown. Scouts from baseball’s major leagues come to watch and check out the best high school baseball players in the world, who are enjoying the baseball diamond at Ricketts Park. Sandstone Productions offers an outdoor theatre with outstanding actors and in an absolutely beautiful venue. Holidays bring out the child in everyone in Farmington, with a Christmas Parade, Festival of Trees, ice skating, Fourth of July events, a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, Easter egg hunts, and the ever popular “Let’s make this a holiday” weekend! Farmington is also home of Pinon Hills Golf Course, one of the best in the nation. It is a short drive away from the Quality Waters of the San Juan River, water sports and camping at Navajo Lake and Park, beautiful Chairman Indian Ruins, the unbelievable beauty of the Bisti Badlands, and the winter sports wonderland of southern ADAM KINNEY Colorado. I encourage you to visit Farmington and discover for yourself the treasure that this community is. But I will warn you – once you visit, you’ll want to stay. And we’d LOVE to have you stay!

Welcome to Farmington! It is my distinct honor to welcome you to Farmington and the Four Corners area of Northwest New Mexico. Relocat- ing can be a difficult and stressful time, but I am confident that our community can help make it an enjoyable process. You will quickly learn that Farmington is a community with a sense of identity and pride; a community where people are friendly, helpful, and accomodating. After all, Farmington is a community where you can Energize your Life’s Journey! Farmington is quickly becoming a destination city where active families and outdoor lovers thrive! See for yourself, when you take time to google our hashtags: #livefarmington, #workfarmington, #playfarmington, and #stayfarm- ington. These hashtags will provide you with hundreds of images that demonstrate how we live, work, and play in our community–and they’ll make you want to STAY! If you don’t have time to google us, let me highlight a few of the attractions in our area that will help you Jolt Your Journy© as you become acclimated to your new home. Some favorites are the Ancestral Puebloan Ruins of Chaco Can- yon, the Aztec and Salmon Ruins, Navajo Lake State Park, the riverine trails along the Animas River, the Farmington Gateway Museum, and the Farmington Public Library. Also available for your enjoyment is our nationally acclaimed Pinon Hills Golf Course and the Outdoor Summer Dinner/Theater at the Lions Wilderness Park Amphitheater. Ad- ditionally, Farmington is host to the Connie Mack World Series baseball tournament played here annually at Ricketts Park for the past 54 years. The Beach at Lake Farmington is a “can’t miss!” With a designated swimming/wading area filled with inflatable climbing walls, obstacles, and slide; an open area for non-motorized water crafts and fishing; and a soon-to-open area for dry camping, summer doesn’t get much better than this! The City of Farmington is full of recreational opportuni- ties and amenities, just like The Beach, that are minutes away from your neighborhood. 2018 and 2019 will provide even more options as the City of Farmington adds an outdoor water park in Brookside park, begins an 8.6 million dollar infrastructure and place-making project in our downtown corridor., and works to attract the Outdoor Industry to our area. You can find out more about these places and events at our Chamber of Commerce located in our beautiful downtown area at 100 West Broadway. Similarly, Farmington is a rich in history and offers much in the way of cultural diversity. In recognition of that his- tory and diversity, the City of Farmington continues to sponsor and promote a program referred to as “Civility First Four Corners”–the goal of which is to stress the importance and benefits of community interactions founded on toler- Mayor ance, inclusion, and respect, among other attributes of civility. NATHAN DUCKETT Ultimately, whether you are relocating for retirement or for work, you’ll discover that the Farmington area has one of the best four-season climates around. I’m sure you will find our native hospitality charming and our community inviting as you consider joining our community-wide family! Best wishes on your journey, Nate Duckett, Mayor City of Farmington
