  • Capitol Insurrection at Center of Conservative Movement
Capitol Insurrection At Center Of Conservative Movement: At Least 43 Governors, Senators And Members Of Congress Have Ties To Groups That Planned January 6th Rally And Riots. SUMMARY: On January 6, 2021, a rally in support of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election “turned deadly” when thousands of people stormed the U.S. Capitol at Donald Trump’s urging. Even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who rarely broke with Trump, has explicitly said, “the mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.” These “other powerful people” include a vast array of conservative officials and Trump allies who perpetuated false claims of fraud in the 2020 election after enjoying critical support from the groups that fueled the Capitol riot. In fact, at least 43 current Governors or elected federal office holders have direct ties to the groups that helped plan the January 6th rally, along with at least 15 members of Donald Trump’s former administration. The links that these Trump-allied officials have to these groups are: Turning Point Action, an arm of right-wing Turning Point USA, claimed to send “80+ buses full of patriots” to the rally that led to the Capitol riot, claiming the event would be one of the most “consequential” in U.S. history. • The group spent over $1.5 million supporting Trump and his Georgia senate allies who claimed the election was fraudulent and supported efforts to overturn it. • The organization hosted Trump at an event where he claimed Democrats were trying to “rig the election,” which he said would be “the most corrupt election in the history of our country.” • At a Turning Point USA event, Rep.

  • White Evangelicals and the 2016 Presidential Election Margaret
ABSTRACT The Elephant in the Room: White Evangelicals and the 2016 Presidential Election Margaret Thonnard Director: Elizabeth Corey, PhD In 2016, eighty-one percent of white evangelical voters voted for Donald Trump—the demographics’ highest showing of support for any presidential candidate in over two decades. Using both existing and original research, this thesis attempts to create awareness for the historical context behind white evangelical support for Donald Trump. Topics covered include the relationships between high-profile evangelicals and presidents such as Nixon and Reagan, as well as the role of televangelists in the 2016 election. After considering the development of partisanship within the evangelical community, the thesis concludes by assessing the practical options available to evangelical voters in upcoming elections. Remarks of Donald Trump to the Faith and Freedom Conference, June 10, 2016, Washington, DC Thank you. Wow. Thank you, everybody. Wow, what a group. So many lights. So many lights. Thank you, everybody. What an honor. We're going to have a big, big victory in November. You're going to be very happy, believe me. Thank you. Ralph is right. This is my third time, and i think the first time it was only okay. The second time, i was great. And this time, we have to top it. Okay? Thank you all for being here. Before we begin, really, I want to thank Ralph Reed. He's been just an amazing guy, and amazing support. Terrific man, and it's a great honor to be invited, and invited back so many times. And I’ll be here as often as i can, believe me, because I’m with you 100%. I also want to thank so many -- I have had so much support. As you know, we have done very well with the evangelicals and with religion generally speaking, if you look at what's happened with all of the races, whether it's in South Carolina, i went there and it was supposed to be strong evangelical, and i was not supposed to win and I won in a landslide, and so many other places where you had the evangelicals and you had the heavy Christian groups and it was just -- it's been an amazing journey to have -- i think we won 37 different states.

  • God's Plan for Mike Pence
God’s Plan for Mike Pence Will the vice president—and the religious right—be rewarded for their embrace of Donald Trump? Tim O'Brien MCKAY COPPINS | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE | POLITICS Like The Atlantic? Subscribe to The Atlantic Email SIGN UP Daily, our free weekday email newsletter. O MAN CAN serve two masters, the Bible teaches, but Mike Pence is giving it his all. It’s a sweltering N September afternoon in Anderson, Indiana, and the vice president has returned to his home state to deliver the Good News of the Republicans’ recently unveiled tax plan. The visit is a big deal for Anderson, a fading manufacturing hub about 20 miles outside Muncie that hasn’t hosted a sitting president or vice president in 65 years—a fact noted by several warm-up speakers. To mark this historic civic occasion, the cavernous factory where the event is being held has been transformed. Idle machinery has been shoved to the perimeter to make room for risers and cameras and a gargantuan American flag, which—along with bleachers full of constituents carefully selected for their ethnic diversity and ability to stay awake during speeches about tax policy—will serve as the TV-ready backdrop for Pence’s remarks. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. When the time comes, Pence takes the stage and greets the crowd with a booming “Hellooooo, Indiana!” He says he has “just hung up the phone” with Donald Trump and that the president asked him to “say hello.” He delivers this message with a slight chuckle that has a certain, almost subversive quality to it.

Those leaks were a massive talking point during the debate between Trump and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, on October 10 at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. The continuing string of scandals related to Donald Trump has exerted mounting pressure on his campaign. He has found difficulty in the search for a response that can get him back in the race, but he has confirmed that he will continue fighting despite having lost the support of some of the most prominent members of the Republican elite, losing ground to the Democratic candidate, and facing calls from some of the members of his party leadership to withdraw from the electoral race. Not the first timeThe string of scandals that hit the GOP candidate was not the first of their kind in a presidential election. Democratic President Grover Cleveland¶s campaign was hit by controversy during his election campaign in 1884, after reports that he had a relationship with a widow and she conceived an illegitimate child. He continued to pay for the child¶s care at an orphanage after the woman became unable to raise him.
