Information about The Society and College of Radiographers are two separate companies the Society and operating together to provide service and support for those involved in College radiography. As a Group they enable the Society to fulfil its role as the professional body and for those practicing in clinical imaging and radiotherapy while the science of radiography is advanced for the public benefit.

The Society (SoR) is a Special Register trade union affiliated to the TUC with approximately 29,000 members. The College (CoR) is an independent charitable company registered in and . The issued share capital of the College is owned by the Society.

Although legally distinct companies, the Society and College operate in a seamless way and have common objectives concerned with the promotion and development of clinical imaging and radiotherapy, the promotion of study and research into radiography and the promotion of public awareness of the profession. All of these objectives are seen to be directly for the public benefit. As the trade union, the Society has the additional objective concerned with protecting the honour and interests of radiographers and others involved in the practice of radiography.

This role reports entirely through the SoR.

Job Purpose The role of Director of Industrial Strategy and Member Relations is a key member of the senior executive team, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, two fellow Directors, the Presidential Team and the UK Council of the SoR. This position provides strategic leadership for the trade union, industrial relations and member relations aspects of the SoR work. Together with other senior posts, the post holder is concerned with efficient collaboration and team working within the SoR / CoR group.

The role has responsibility for the following major areas:

• Maintaining, Developing and Leading a progressive and

member focussed approach to the trade union function of the

SoR.

• Overseeing the organisation-wide activities directed towards membership growth and retention • Advising the UK Council on strategy and policy relating to Industrial and trade union relations, Political Influence and member relations • Collaborating with the CEO and fellow directors over strategy and policy and in setting operational objectives for the Society of Radiographers • With the CEO and Directors, providing coherent leadership and management for the staff of the Society

This is a highly visible role, accessible to the membership and the post holder would be expected to attend major events in the Society’s calendar, notably the Annual Delegates Conference, Radiographer of the Year Awards, Society AGM, the and the UK Imaging and Oncology Congress.

• Development of strategies for the SoR to grow industrial relations

influence and impact with employers in the health and social care sector in the four countries of the UK and with partners in the trade union movement • Develop and oversee a strategy for the recruitment and retention of members to deliver sustainable growth

• Work closely with the CEO and senior management team and

build effective relationships across the Society and College

Membership The Society of Radiographers has experienced steady growth in membership sustained for well over ten years. Current membership is over 30,000. This is not restricted to registered radiographers but we believe we have around 80% of the radiography registrants with the Health and care Professions Council in membership.

People Line management responsibility is for the Industrial Relations Manager, the team of 8 Full Time Officers (Regional Officers, Student Membership Officer and Health and Safety Officer) and two administrative staff. There is shared line management (with the Director of Professional Practice) for two National Officers. PA support is provided from the Chief Executive’s Office.

Development of strong working relationships with the other Directors and CEO and key cross-organisational roles, particularly the Knowledge Manager and External Relations, Communications and Marketing Manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In accordance with the policy aims of the UK Council of the Society of Radiographers (SoR) strategic plans, plus the agreed team objectives relevant to this post, the Director of Industrial Strategy and Member Relations will undertake the following:

• To Manage the Trade Union and Industrial Relations and the membership sections of SoR, ensuring budgetary control and excellent management of all employees in the teams. • To maintain strong information, intelligence and advisory structures and mechanisms to support rigorous policy formulation and goal setting; and participate in the spectrum of liaison and other meetings with partner and stakeholder organisations that may impact on trades union, industrial relations and membership. • To direct the provision of representation advice and support for SoR members through workplace representation and full time officers. • To take overall responsibility with the Industrial Relations manager for case management in HCPC referrals. • To provide a strategic vision and leadership for active member participation in the SoR through the regional / national structure. • To provide management oversight and manage the budget for the Annual Delegates Conference, ensuring effective delivery and taking forward resolutions agreed by the conference. • To lead the cross-organisational priority to serve members and to grow membership. • To lead the development of strategic proposals in relation to the employment terms and working practices of members of SoR. • To lead the provision of evidence to the NHS Pay review Body. • To ensure representation of SoR in its dealings with employers, governmental and non-governmental bodies, key opinion formers and decision makers, other unions and professional bodies. • Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Operations and the External Relations, Communications and Marketing Manager to manage a unified approach to marketing the membership function and to the representation of membership statistics, including administration of the SoR Political Fund. • To take lead responsibility for the lobbying of government and shadow ministers, leading civil servants, key policy staff in the main political parties, TUC and general secretaries of unions. • To take lead responsibility for inter-union relations and relations with the TUC. • To have overall responsibility for maximising SoR membership potential. • To lead the member-facing work of the Society. • To represent the Society in liaison with external stakeholders. • Lead and manage the provision of legal support for members in cases of personal injury at work. • Lead and manage the provision of professional indemnity insurance for members; managing referrals with the Broker and negotiating with the Broker and the Underwriter for development and policy renewal. • Ensure the development and training of SoR workplace representatives.

• Play active roles in the senior management structures and teams, and in ensuring that the organisation works effectively to deliver and report on the total business of the SoR. • Closely supporting the Chief Executive Officer in the role of General Secretary of the Society as a Special Register Trade Union in order to maintain an effective governance framework. • Undertake other duties as necessary to ensure the effective operation of the SCoR, and in accordance with organisational policies.
