Amazon Prime members will be able to stream episodes 1 & 2 of the music-inspired comedy series on Monday 4th July, with subsequent episodes launching weekly, only a day after they premiere in the US, starting on Monday 11th July. From Cameron Crowe - who won an Academy Award® for chronicling the highs and lows of rock and roll life in the film Almost Famous - along with Emmy® and Tony® nominee Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life, Wicked) and Emmy® winner J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest, Star Trek films), ROADIES is a new comedy series that follows the day-to-day life of a successful rock tour, but with a simple twist: the band is in the background, and the roadies take the spotlight. This is an inside look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of characters who live for music, and the improvised family they've formed along the way. "Cameron Crowe and Winnie Holzman are both amazing story tellers and having both of their voices behind ROADIES makes it one of the most anticipated series of the year." stated Jay Marine, Vice President, Amazon Prime Video Europe. "Joining shows like The Man in the High Castle, Transparent, Mr. Robot, Preacher and the upcoming Clarkson, Hammond and May show, The Grand Tour, Roadies is a great addition to our line-up and we're sure that Prime customers are going to love it." ROADIES stars Luke Wilson (Old School, The Royal Tenenbaums), Carla Gugino (San Andreas), Imogen Poots (28 Days Later), Rafe Spall (Prometheus), Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider), Peter Cambor (NCIS: Los Angeles), musician Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly) and Ron White (Horrible Bosses). The series also features guest stars Jacqueline Byers (Ascension), Luis Guzman (Traffic), Finesse Mitchell (Saturday Night Live), Branscombe Richmond (Renegade) and Tanc Sade (Gilmore Girls). The show is a celebration of the crew members who live in the pockets of the people they work with, trying to remember which city they're in, and moving heaven and earth to give the fans an experience they'll never forget. They are the ones who literally get the show on the road. ROADIES is produced by Bad Robot Productions, Vinyl Films and Dooley & Company Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Cameron Crowe, Winnie Holzman, J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and Len Goldstein are executive producers; Kathy Lingg is co-executive producer. The deal was signed with Warner Bros. A Celebration of Our First Black Graduates Saturday, February 25, 2017 Welcome to the UTrailblazers Gala! The University of Miami admitted its first black students in 1961, 35 years after opening for classes in 1926. Black students, faculty, staff, and alumni have enriched the University’s culture, academic vigor, and overall excellence in countless ways throughout the 56 years since our desegregation. The UTrailblazers Gala and related events are a celebration of unprecedented size and scope to honor black graduates of the 1960s and 1970s as well as faculty and staff members who helped blaze a trail of inclusion at the U. Launched by members of the UM Black Alumni Society in 2013, the First Black Graduates Project is an initiative to unearth the powerful voices, experiences, and contributions of the University’s first black graduates and ensure they are embedded into the fabric of our beloved Hurricanes history. • The Evolution of Mediatized Stand-Up Comedy: Investigating Para-Performances on Television, Film, and Youtube
The Evolution of Mediatized Stand-Up Comedy: Investigating Para-Performances on Television, Film, and YouTube by Mirali Almaula A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Literary/Theatre Studies in English Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Mirali Almaula, September, 2015 ABSTRACT THE EVOLUTION OF MEDIATIZED STAND-UP COMEDY: INVESTIGATING PARA-PERFORMANCES ON TELEVISION, FILM, AND YOUTUBE Mirali Almaula Advisor: University of Guelph, 2015 Professor A. Filewod Although the majority of today’s performances are accessible on multiple platforms, performance analysis often continues to focus on the live event or to discuss the recorded event as if it were live. This thesis explores the influence of various mediatizations on a performance form. In order to better understand changes in power, control, and authority that are produced on differing mediums, it develops a form of analysis that views the performance event as comprised of two aspects. It argues that a performance event is comprised of the performance proper, which is a performance that is identifiable as being for entertainment purposes, and the para- performance, which arises due to the intention and/or execution of the performance proper. For example, the performance text of a theatrical work is the performance proper whereas the audience’s reactions, the architecture of the performance space, and the promotional materials and reviews are part of the para-performance. A para- performance analysis thus reads both the performance proper and the para- performance “as” performance. This thesis is an investigation of the process of adapting live performance to media platforms.

POWER TO THE PODCASTS: PUBLICS, OPINIONS, AND THE ECONOMY OF BLACK PODCASTS Tegan R. Bratcher A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media Chapel Hill 2021 Approved by: Joe Cabosky Trevy McDonald Daniel Kreiss Candace Epps-Robertson Shannon McGregor © 2021 Tegan R. Bratcher ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Tegan R. Bratcher: Power to the Podcasts: Publics, Opinions, and the Economy of Black Podcasts (Under the direction of Dr. Joe Cabosky) Since the early 2000s, podcasting has been a growing part of the media landscape. Many media outlets have declared podcasts to be the “next big thing,” stimulating discourse across various facets of our lives. This dissertation explored Black podcasts, particularly as they relate to public opinion, culture and rhetoric, social media and the history of Black media, and strategic communication more generally. In all of these subfields and areas of mass communication or media studies, the examination of podcasts from critical and diverse lenses have had major gaps in literature. This dissertation uses multiple perspectives and theoretical frameworks to uncover the economy of podcasts, and in particular, how Black podcasters in a contemporary landscape are utilizing this revolutionizing platform. While scholarship has analyzed the larger, more commercially successful podcasts, what is less often examined are the everyday podcasts that more and more Americans are looking to for extracurricular fulfillment, selfpromotion/branding/marketing, community building, and potentially profit-inducing reasons. This study interviewed twenty active podcasters and analyzed four distinct Black podcasts with aims of revealing broader themes about podcasts and their influences on our communicative practices and spaces.

  • A Message from the Dean of Students
Student Life @ A NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS WINTER 2014 A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS Greetings Parents and Students, As the spring semester gets under way, we want to reflect on some of the highlights from the fall semester and look ahead to great things to come. In October, we instituted a new program designed by our Diversity Leaders called Unity Day. Unity Day’s mission is to welcome new students to RWU and challenges them to consider the historical and social implications of identity and to move beyond the superficial barriers that can separate students on a college campus. Students had a chance to meet other students who want to engage in diversity and social justice issues and who want to become involved in social change at RWU. In October, over one hundred students gathered to engage in activities and workshops to explore issues of racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, heterosexism, ableism, privilege and more. This program preceded RWU’s Coming Out Day, which involved a plethora of events that brought together all the student groups on campus that work towards issues of equity and diversity to support our LGBTQ friends and allies. Roger After Dark (RAD), the student run late night alternative programming series held most Friday nights, had a stellar series of events. Each Friday evening the RAD student committee partnered with a student club or organization to co-sponsor the event and create a theme. Themes from the fall included Intervarsity’s “Hero’s”, the Multicultural Student Union’s (MSU) “Hispanic Heritage,” the Crew Team’s “Nautical Night,” and Add Nothing’s “Alice in Wonderland.” We wrapped up the semester with the science club hosting “Mad Science” night, which included a showing of Space Odyssey 2001, and an eclectic crowd joined in for a great time.
