Publication Anger Burning Editorial It’S Been a While Since the Last Issue PUBLICATION ANGER BURNING EDITORIAL IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE THE LAST ISSUE. IT TAKES TIME. TIME TO GATHER MOTIVATION TO START UP A NEW SET OF QUESTIONNAIRES. TIME FOR THEM TO BE ANSWERED. TIME FOR THEM TO BE FORMATTED INTO A DOCUMENT TO BE CREATED AS A PDF. TIME TO TAKE ALL THAT CONTENT AND REPURPOSE IT FOR THE WEBSITE FOR SHARING. YEAH – NOT EASY AT ALL, BUT MADE ALL THE MORE ENJOYABLE WHEN YOU GET THOSE RESPONSES BACK! I’VE ALSO HAD TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE FORMATTING AND TAKEN THE DECISION THAT WHILE A MONOSPACED TYPEWRITER FONT IS COOL FOR A SHORT PIECE OF TEXT (LIKE THIS!), IT CAN BE WEARING ON THE EYES WHEN USED IN THE MAJORITY OF THE MAGAZINE. SO – I’VE TAKEN THE DECISION TO MAKE THE ARTICLES MUCH MORE READABLE BY USING A NORMAL FONT, AS WELL AS REVERTING TO A PLAIN WHITE BACKGROUND, RATHER THAN THAT PSEUDO-PHOTOCOPIED THING I HAD GOING ON. THIS ISSUE IS THE MUCH-PROMISED METAL SPECIAL AND AFTER A HIATUS OF WORKING ON ISSUE 5 OF THE ZINE, LEAVING STONEY TO DO THE VAST MAJORITY OF WRITTEN WORD WORK, IT’S GREAT TO FINALLY SEE THIS COME TO FRUITION. THERE IS A FAIR BIAS ON ONE PERSON AND HER BANDS IN THIS ISSUE. KAT GILLHAM HAS A FAIR FEW ON THE GO AND THE MAJORITY CAN ALL BE CLASSED AS METAL IN ONE SUB-GENRE OR ANOTHER. Mandora reformed in September 2013 after splitting in August 1987 but have quickly got back up to speed with an amazing reunion comeback gig, sold out in two weeks, with their full pyro show like back in the day. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

Those two subgenres were what built the Roadrunner house, and it was shocking that they started to move away from their bread and butter. Unlike Slipknot, Amen was the real deal. Amen was punk rock, and not the pre-packaged sterile shit you buy at a mall. Casey Chaos was full of piss and vinegar. On Amen you get him at his best. Everything came together nicely on Amen. The production is raw and abrasive as it should be. The only knocks that these guys had against them at the time was that they had Ross Robinson produce them, who was also responsible for introducing Korn to us (gee, thanks), and the fact that they had novelty band Ugly Kid Joe’s drummer Shannon Larkin, who proved on this album that he could play hard. Mayo's and Fig’s riffs are unbelievable. I never thought punk in 1999 could be this against the grain, given the soft (i.e. Green Day and Blink 182) direction that so called punk was heading. The standout tracks on Amen are “Drive,” “Down Human,” and what went on to become their signature track, “Coma America.” How about the artwork? That was scandalous. Amen should have been huge, and the people at Metal Mind seem to agree as they have issued an expanded, gold pressed, limited edition of this criminally underrated debut album.
