ANOTHER OPINION Georgia voting law sparks round of political falsehoods eorgia’s state legislature has passed a set of laws tightening the mechanics of the state’s voting Gprocess. Democrats are decrying the move as restrictive and racist, with some prominent national and state leaders, including President Joe Biden, comparing the law to the Jim Crow era. Republicans have challenged these asser- tions, arguing the bill’s provisions actually expand voting access while tightening security for the process with commonsense ID requirements. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. The super-heated rhetoric coming from the left is obscuring legitimate criticisms of the bill, and Republicans’ claims that the bill will not dampen voter turnout also ring hollow. The country’s political leaders must stop grandstand- ing and actually work to reach reasonable compromises. Tightening the amount of time voters can request a mail-in ballot or requiring a state-issued ID to request an absentee ballot is not the same as requiring a poll tax or a literacy test. The law does limit the option of mail-in voting. For example, it makes it illegal for a mail-in ballot to be mailed to all eligible voters, instead requiring voters to request a ballot. It also limits the number of state-provided drop boxes and reduces the hours that voters can drop off ballots. (It’s worth noting that ballot drop boxes would not have been legal in the future without this law.) This will Relish your memories but live in the present certainly make those who don’t customarily vote less likely to do so as compared to “turnout” if voters were to receive a ballot in the mail each election. The bill also makes the state election board chairper- The moment is now son a position elected by the state’s General Assembly instead of the Georgia secretary of state, centralizing in’t it funny how time slips They are totally at peace with the election authority with the state legislature. Who cares about public notices?

You have the right to know what’s happening in your community. Public notices – information local governments are obligated to provide citizens – are required to be published in local newspapers to provide a public record that’s accessible to everyone.

Public notices keep you informed about your government. But, in some states legislators are trying to keep public notices from appearing in local newspapers. This severely impacts government transparency and, in turn, limits the public’s right to hold them accountable for their actions.

Let your state legislators know that you value being able to access notices in your newspaper and that they are worth the investment.

Protect public notices in newspapers and protect your right to know.

Williamson wins district titles in 100 & 200, breaking his own mark, while Stockton leaps to 1st in triple jump.

GAINESVILLE — James Williamson won two district titles, qualified for regionals in another event and broke his own school record. All in a day’s work. Williamson won the District 2-3A title in the 100 with a time of 10.69 seconds and then won the 200 in 21.75 seconds, breaking his previous program record of 21.78 that he set just two weeks ago at Santa Fe. They were the first two district crowns in the senior’s career. “It was kind of hard because there are some good people in this district, so I just had to keep practicing,” Williamson said. “Last year it got canceled so I just wanted to work harder than the next person to just try and get those goals met.” Those goals weren’t it for Williamson at the District 2-3A meet at Gainesville High School. He also qualified for regionals in the 400 with a fourth-place finish (50.23). But Williamson stumbled coming to the finish line in the 400 and scraped his knee and face. And that was before he had to run the 200. It didn’t stop Williamson though from grab- bing another district title. It’s been an impressive season so far for Williamson, who also battled a calf injury a month ago. He won the 200 by 0.24 seconds and the 100 by 0.21 seconds. “I’ve got to practice hard for these next two weeks for regionals,” Williamson said. “I see myself going to state if I just keep practicing.” Joining Williamson at regionals is another district champion in Seth Stockton, who won the triple jump with a leap of 13.03m. The sophomore won it comfortably too, beating Mosley’s Cree Ross by 0.31m. “It felt good to win it,” Stockton said. “I wasn’t really expecting to win it because there were a lot of good players out there. Everybody in our district are all striving to do the same thing, so it felt good to win it.” The boys placed fourth overall with 81 points behind champion Rickards (186), Lincoln (154) and Leon (84). But the Tigers had a more regional qualifiers in addition to Williamson and Stockton. Nate Walmsley was a double qualifier, placing third in the discus (37.64m) and fourth in the shot put (13.31m). “Nate is going to have a lot of competition in the shot put and the discus,” Columbia coach JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter Columbia’s Seth Stockton (left) won a district title in the triple jump at Saturday’s District 2-3A meet, while James CHS continued on 4B Williamson (right) won district crowns in the 100 and 200, breaking his own school record in the 200 by .03 seconds.
