Held the last weekend in October, the auction of the 240 autos as well as automotive memorabilia once owned by Najeeb Khan drew more than 2,500 live and remote bid- ders from 53 countries, The Elkhart Truth reported. Khan is the former CEO of Interlogic Outsourcing Inc., an Elkhart-based payroll processing firm that was sold after filing for bankruptcy protection last year. RM Sotheby’s said the auction grossed just under $44.4 million in sales, including eight cars that went for more than $1 million each. The auction house said it expected the collection to sell for $35 million to $40 million. A bankruptcy court had ordered the collection auctioned off to help repay more than $100 million Khan owes to KeyBank National Association and more than 120 other companies and individuals. “We are extremely pleased with the results, especially considering the complexities and challenges of executing such a high-profile auction with multiple constituents in the “Hellcrate Redeye” 6.2-liter Suopercharged HEMI V-8 engine (part#68303091AA) is rated at 807 horse- current market environment,” said RM Sotheby’s President Kenneth Ahn. power and 717lb.ft. of torque. ON THE COVER Henry Kaiser, Troy Ruttman, and Madman Muntz Three Originals ROBERT C. POST Two of the men mentioned above appear in the photograph on the cover of this issue. Henry J. Kaiser does not, just his namesake automobile manu- factured at his plant near Ypsilanti, Michigan. Of the three, however, only Kaiser’s has remained a name to be reckoned with in American history: the entrepreneur behind Hoover, Bonneville, and Grand Coulee dams; builder of a third of the entire World War II U.S. merchant fleet, as well as the world’s largest cement plant at Permanente, California, and a steel mill in Fontana that employed as many as 11,000 workers; founder of the Kaiser Medical Care Program in Oakland, which became the template for the HMOs so much in current news; developer of Hawaii Kai, another tem- plate, in this case for the luxury resort hotel complex; chief of an industrial firm that made hundreds of different products, from airplanes to dish- washers. In 2004, the Oakland Museum of California staged an exhibition about Kaiser’s “impact on the modern economic and cultural landscape” called Henry J. Kaiser: Think Big. Not everything Kaiser created survives today—only a couple of those merchant ships, and the steel mill replaced by California Speedway, a land reuse entailing minimal toxic-waste clean- up. But he certainly left monuments. By comparison, Earl Muntz’s fame was fleeting—and yet his name did become a punch line for Jack Benny and Bob Hope, he is enshrined in the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Hall of Fame, and a sports car called the Muntz Jet is a rare treasure among collectors.

  • Hamlin Headlines Weekend with Bristol Win
Hamlin Headlines Weekend with Bristol Win August 19, 2019 PLANO, Texas. (August 19, 2019) – Denny Hamlin’s win at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday highlighted the racing action for Toyota over the weekend. NASCAR Hamlin captured his fourth win of the season on Saturday night in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) race at Bristol. Hamlin led 79 laps (of 500), passing Camry driver, Matt DiBenedetto, for the lead with 11 laps to go. DiBenedetto tallied a career-best second-place finish after leading a race-high 93 laps at the Tennessee short track. “I’m so sorry to Matt DiBenedetto, (crew chief) Mike Wheeler,” said Hamlin, following the win. “I know a win would mean a lot to that team, but I have to give it 110% for FedEx and my whole team. Proud of this whole FedEx team for giving me a great car, pit crew, crew chief, everybody doing an amazing job. The whole team is just doing an amazing job right now.” Kyle Busch (fourth) also finished in the top five after coming from a lap down to lead 30 laps, as Toyota drivers led a combined 277 laps throughout Saturday night’s MENCS race. Timmy Hill was the top-finishing Supra driver in Friday night’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Bristol, matching a career-best seventh-place finish. “Bristol has always been a great track for me and I’m glad we could put on a great finish here,” said Hill, following the race. “MBM (Motorsports) and HRE (Hattori Racing Enterprises) came in collaboration for this race.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Megan Englehart Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017 [email protected] FOX NASCAR QUOTES McReynolds and Waltrip Break Down Saturday’s Regular Season Finale, Championship Scenarios & Upcoming Playoffs CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saturday night’s MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES race at Richmond Raceway marks the conclusion of the regular season and will determine the 16 drivers who qualify for the championship playoffs. FS1 offers live, pre-race coverage Saturday on NASCAR RACEDAY beginning at 3:30 PM ET. Below are quotes from FOX NASCAR analysts Larry McReynolds and Michael Waltrip (Waltrip from Monday’s edition of NASCAR RACE HUB on FS1) regarding Saturday’s race and storylines surrounding the countdown to the playoffs: On Denny Hamlin’s sweep at Darlington Raceway: “One thing that has changed for Denny, besides maturing a little bit, is he was going through crew chiefs pretty rapidly for a few years. He didn’t quite have the chemistry he was looking for. However, Denny asked specifically for Mike Wheeler, and this is their second season together. I think they’ll be together for a long time because that combination is working.” --Larry McReynolds On how the addition of playoff points could affect the title run: “It’s like having home field advantage in the NFL. You race hard all season long and grab those playoff points, so you can rely on them if you slip and slide in the first three races. Martin Truex Jr. is just about into round 2 by his playoff points, and Jimmie Johnson needs to fight for every point he can get.
